they are the varsity marching band b/c one time some band members went into a football locker room to use a shower after marching practice. The coach caught them and said 'What are you doing in here, this is the varsity locker room". They replied with "Well, we're the Varsity marching band". The name stuck.

There I am in the I, no no, the hawkeyes waddle, waddle being "to walk with short steps, swaying or rocking from side to side, as a duck." We keep our upper bodys and lower bodies straight up and down. The hawks move their upper and lower bodies seperately in a side to side motion during their pregame entrance, thus a waddle. As for why Varsity.. I'll quote the webpage and tell you when you join up.

Maybe you tell me why you guys are the "varsity" marching band. I've never heard why and it has always puzzled me.
