@RachelBerryGoldStar I don't think many people would have gotten the reference here in the US. We have never called trash cans that ; ) Though I like to say wheelie bins way more than trash can!
I think the only major issues they have is the word conversions, like most Americans have no clue what a wheelie bin is, or other things like that. I get the jokes but then again I have an obsession with England so I know the proper terms.
Did anyone else notice he doesn't have as much of an accent here? I'm pretty sure he's doing it on purpose, though.
I can't believe he was on US TV! And I can't believe this wasn't more censored. US talk shows seem really sensitive about any type of 'sassy' language, even the primetime ones
@foxyspirits The funny thing is that Russell is six feat tall. In "Russell Howard's Good News," he bumped back into a police measuring tape for mugshots at the 6' mark, while being slightly hunched. Puts into perspective how tall Conan is
I'm an American, and while I freely admit to having to use Wikipedia occasionally to get a reference a British comic might use, I really enjoy British stand-up. It's not so inherently different from "good ol' fashioned" American comedy that it's completely foreign or anything. It disappoints me that talented comics like Russell Horward and Frankie Boyle don't head stateside more often... at least, I don't hear about them. I'd be at those shows. :-(
@RetroYoungen I think it's due more to Frankies inability to NOT shock the shit out of the USA that he doesn't head there much. That man's theory on 9/11 would get him arrested. Twice.
@Interwebzicast *sigh* I know, and it's truly a shame... Boyle is a great stand-up. And borderline insane. But more funny than crazy, and will never be over here like he is across the pond. Same with guys like Ed Byrne. It's just a cryin' shame.
American's find most types of comedy offensive thats why they will never get British comedy, we've been around a long time and don't mind taking the piss out of ourselves, give the American's a couple hundred years.
@Stev6000 untrue. I'm a Brit living in America and find a lot of their comedy is very much about taking the pee out of the American way of life. In fact they are so comfortable with it they even let foreign comedians take the pee out of them too. Just take a look at a lot of Eddie Izzard's stuff in the states, he pretty much slams Americans the whole time.
@Stev6000 Aside from the positive response RH (and Gervais, Izzard, Fry, Jim Jeffries) is getting over here and the numerous American fans of British comedy, there's another flaw in your generalization. Unlike the UK and Australia, the US has much looser libel laws. In other words, you can say almost anything you want about any public figure. This means US comedy is often more personal and potentially offensive. Frankie Boyle would do quite well, but wouldn't be especially shocking.
@Stev6000 Way to stereotype there. I'm American, and I love many different examples of British comedy. Also, it seems from this video the audience enjoyed his standup. Don't really think you made a good or relevant point.
@satch234 what you think of bill bailey though hes got a big fan base over here and i saw a vid of him live in usa and only some people found him funny not sure why hes hilarious lol
@Stev6000 I beg to differ. For one thing, American comedians also take the piss out of America, and secondly, I know plenty of Americans that enjoy British comedy, myself included.
I really like Russell Howard, but it's definitly not American humour! It's all nervous laughing from the crowd as if to say, "I think thats funny? But I cant understand him?".
Ahhh!! HOW did i not know that Russell Howard was on Conan?! As an American who LOVES him, I'd be soo happy to see him do well over here. He's absolutely hilarious. :)
Play it a bit safe?? He came straight out (if you pardon the pun!) with material on homosexuality and then shagging - hardly safe! I stopped watching half way through as I was a bit embarrassed to be honest. One of our top comics making a US tv debut and he relies on gay and sex jokes - he's got much better material which is more observant and funnier. I love Russell Howard but I think he could have been a bit more 'intelligent' than that.
@JCRocksteady I agree with you for the most part but you've got to remember a lot of his material comes from current topics, mainly in Britain. We love that kind of humour. @thecortni That's what I was thinking! The teeth were what freaked me out the most. I miss his old teeth, if that isn't too weird to say. He's still hilarious though, no matter what he looks like.
@stueymon I think it's how tiny Russell Howard is! I met him once and he's so small! I was 5"9/10 at the time and he was a good few inches shorter than me!
@stueymon Conan is about 6'6". He often seems even taller b/c he is quite thin and has the Conan-quiff. I wonder if things like that are why Dara O Briain is usually seated??? Or maybe it's coincidence.
