  • sparksnote has a really good analysis on the book(plus the symbolism and use of christian science that frances used) and good character anylsis on dickon and mary^_^

  • So i'm the only one who used to have a crush on colin?

  • @NDubzFrenzy haha, noup, there's two of us

  • You all have a crush on Dickon... And yet I had a crush on Colin... I'm such an oddball..

  • isnt colin marys cousin, or its just an interfamily relationship

  • oh god please grant this one wish: i wish i was mary right now!

  • god please grant this one wish: i wish i was mary at that moment with dickon please!

  • this scene always creeped me out. actually, colin kinda creeps me out... dickon is lovely though.

  • poor Colin!

  • The actor who played Dickon was in the film adaptation of The History Boys, I studied it in my A Levels last year and watched the movie in class, I thought he looked familiar. :D

  • @FunkChicks08 he was in the original stage cast aswell. you're so lucky, in our class we watch rubbish films!

  • @NemDenxxx Yeah he was. I saw the stage version as well it was awesome, he wasn't in the one I saw but still it's an awesome show :)

  • What is the melody name?

  • @robilinca leaving the docks

  • When I was young I had a massive crush on Dickon. Im 17 now. and goodness me I wish i was Mary.

  • @thicketwings05 Oh, jezz, I get you so well, isn't he goooorgeus???

  • Dickon's played by the boy who played Joe in Black Beauty. I had a <3 on him.

  • Aww the guy who plays dicken is one of gavin + smithys friend in gavin + stacey. he plays budgie or dirtbox i think :)

  • I used to have a gigantic crush on Dickinson.I sorta wish I was in marys place right about now.

  • I just went and looked them up on IMDB. The girl that played Mary is gorgeous now but the two that played Colon and Dickon aren't so great looking. It's kind of sad. :(

  • I don't know why, but i've always been fond of Colin and Mary's relationship (even though they were cousins) xD

  • i was such a gruoch like mary when i was little =P best part of the movie

  • this part is so cute!

    omg i love it!

  • Teehee...love triangle :D

  • I love the chemestry (love) between Mary and Dickons <3

  • Ah Dickon, what a man :D

  • Awww! I always loved this scene :) and isn't the music just beautiful?

  • Heydon prowse was so cute back then!

  • Sorry, Collin! But when you get older, you'll understand that when it comes to your cousin, she's out of reach.

  • I watched this again last night, last time I watched it I must have been 7 or 8 and didn't understand this scene that well. But when I watched it last night I thought it was really cute.

  • love this part!!

  • ahh i love dickon we watched this in class and i thought he was really cute

  • dickon's like, "Damn, man. Why are you c*ckblocking?!"

  • lol omg I loved this scene!!!

  • I don't really understand why Colin would be jealous. I mean he and Mary are cousins! lol Dickon x Mary best couple!

  • i could just imagine dickon all like "What asshole"

  • @XxPurpleMinxXx LOL. and colin's like, "Why did I tell Dickon to sit on the swing with her?! Why?!"

  • When I was younger (4-ish?)- I thought that was about the epitome of romance, sitting on a swing, gazing at that other person... I still think it's incredibly cute. This movie has forever made me read the novel gunning for Mary/Dickon! Thanks for posting this :)

  • cuuute x3

    gotta love Dickon <3

  • What song is this?

  • when i was a kid i always wanted a swing like that...i still want one ugh

  • @HeyPlayGirl99 dont fall off or you might......die?

  • I completely agree about the whole Mary/Dickon thing. The whole movie is so magical, but how is it possible that 10-year-olds could have such...chemistry? This scene is, by far, the best in the whole movie.

Since I know many of you are yearning for a sequel, check out this fanfiction story. I promise it won't taint the original story at all - you'll love it!

  • So youtube won't let me post...go to fanfiction. net > Books > The Secret Garden > Remembering Magic.

  • what version of the secret garden is this from? I'd love to watch the whole thing :)

  • @pumpkinpancke 1993 version

  • SO CUTE!!! Mary and Dickon are the perfect couple!

  • no colin no fatty. for me it's the best. lol~

  • "I'm not sour!"

That was the best Colin scene ever. We used to replay it over and over and laugh our heads off.

  • I THINK they should make a movie with theese same actors all grown up and mary had gone away for a few years being a friend home with her (a girl) and COLLIN FALLS IN LOVE WITH mary's friend and DICKON AND MARY FALL IN LOVE!!

  • arent they cousins?

    thats sorta weird.

  • when i first saw the movie (which was last night) i feel in love with it!! the next day (2day) i acutally went to my libaray to find the book and now im reading it :) this is my fave scene in the movie!!! this movie rocks and i also love the movie "the little princess" these movies are awesome!!!!

  • Was I the only weird child that had a thing for Colin? Bratty or not, he was funny. :P

  • dickon is cute and sweet!!! i dont understand why amy chooses colin in the end.. the 2nd movie really stinks, it spoiled the plot!

however thats my fav scene ever^^

  • amy? who's amy? do you mean mary? x

  • @onypotter i know right

    and dont u mean mary?

  • yes, sorry^^

  • Who?

    Amy?

Lol her name is Mary and she never chooses Colin...

Someone made that up, the book never states who she chooses as she never grows up. I do feel irritated that every poorly written sequel has hooked Mary up with Colin. If anything it is implied that Mary isn't interested in Colin in that way, but Dicken. Just the way she describes him in the book shows an infatuation with him.

  • @Sshelly34213 I also thought Mary had a crush on Dickon (in a very innocent ten year old sort of way). After she first meets him, she gushes a lot to Martha and even says "I think he's beautiful!"

  • Indeed.

I think it's odd that all of these sequels try and hook her up with Colin, I think it's because we're meant to imply that she has strong feelings for Dickon. So hooking her up with Colin, instead gives their sequel a twist. Lazy writers!

  • this always made me think that there would be a love triangle when they grew up, even tho this is never suggested in the book! The plot of a book wrote about their life when they were older (obv not by the real author) was terrible!

The war idea and Dickon was good - bar the suicide, the garden should have cured him plus colin and marys bizzarre marrige, naaa.

Someone please write a decent drama andrew knotts still around, we can now seee hot dickon! :)

  • anyone knows the name of this beautiful music?

  • I actually have the soundtrack ripped onto my computer, but it only lists the composer and not any of the song titles- lucy simon is the composer.

  • thanks, but I just found the movie soundtrack!

  • For some reason, I always remember this scene, and wonder if they would grow up to be together. :P

  • what a douche lol

  • I love this movie! It's one of my favorites! When I was little, I'd watch this and 'The Little Princess' over and over again. I still love it! thanks for posting!!

  • So many years since I've watched this :O

I wonder what they look like now...

  • kate maberly was in finding neverland

  • really?!! 0.0

  • too bad Colin, Dickon wins!!

  • actually colins is marrys cousin so it have to be dickon any way

  • cousins marry eww, lol.

Some people prefer mary with colin, hehe

  • @somerandomdude808 lol it wud be a bit wrong 4 mary& collin anywayz coz they're cousins

  • aw so cute when they were little x]

  • before this wuz one ov my fav scenes, now its just this one. Colin shoulv just took th picr an stayd ot ov it : D

  • thss 1 ov ma fav scenes. ma othr 1s r at th end whn Mary says 'the spell was broken. my uncle learned to laugh, and i learned to cry. the secret garden is always open now. its open, awake, and alive.', from when Colin says 'it was Mary who found the key...' to b4 whn Mary said 'the spell was broken...(etc)'

  • favourte bit,

  • Mine too!

  • I'm reading the book on my dsi, the book is brilliant and the movie gives the book justice. All the scenes in the film and book are great.

  • yeah, i love the book, though think they should have kept dr craven in the movie, ill say no more as to avoid spoiling it for you.

  • but he is in this movie or did i miss something???

  • spoiler alert.

, i'm pretty sure he isn't, dr. craven is the guy who's related to colin and secretly kinda wants him to die so he can inherit the house when mr. craven dies sometime . he's a doctor, and pretends to like colin.which really makes more sense than ms medlock 4 no reason keeping colin shut in. in the book, it's by dr craven's orders. i think he's like mr. craven's younger brother or something.

  • u c read books on dsi? lol

  • wonderful film! i love it

  • ehi ehi,cool down!...anyway, i love this film...this scene's amazing :P poor colin!

  • I love this scene...... dickon and mary are so cute.

    colin gets jealous easy>

  • i watched this in school with my class. amazing movie and ABSOLUTELY AMAZING SCENE!!! <33 LOVE IT!

  • I remember buying this movie when I was 13 when it was released and I loved it, especially this scene. The music was so beautiful as well! It captured that time period so well and how nature can be so fragile and meaningful to us and the earth. This is why I loved it so much!

    Such a classic film.

  • ugh .. i LOVE this scene .

    so adorable ..

  • When I was younger I had a crush on Dickon. I didn't know what a crush was then, as I was about six, but I had some weird fascination with him. ;)

  • @IQuiteLikeCookies Lol, me too! And in Black Beauty!

  • @IQuiteLikeCookies haha same maybe he has the ability to make animals and small children like him ;)

  • @IQuiteLikeCookies Same here!!!

  • @IQuiteLikeCookies

I think a lot of us girls did when we were little. I definitely did!

  • @IQuiteLikeCookies

Me tooooooo. I thought he was sooo cute. x3 Him and Draco Malfoy. :3

  • chan!

    uuuuhhhh

    me encanta esta escena!!!

    :kuso:

  • Hello England owned India and so English people lived there and worked there and stuff Martha expected Mary to be a native from India and was surprised when Mary was white

    muffinxofxglory

you may have read the book but I do not think you understand the context of the history

  • please do not act like i am stupid. i know india was owned by england because i'm indian but I didn't know it was in that time.

  • Comment removed

  • She is from India, but her parents were English.

  • sorry but your stupid.

  • no offense taken, you have your opinon.

  • you're*

  • You're stupid too, its you're, as in you are.

  • i love this scene, mary and dickon should've gotten together

  • Perhaps they did when they got older :)

  • lol I'm watching this movie on t.v write now on channle 51 family channle. this channle is in Canada only. I'm starting to love this movie the kids in the movie are soo cute (^_^)

  • omg i watched it too! LOL i loved this scene. i havn't seen this movie since i was like 5.

  • Judging from your name I bet you're a Beatles fan. THEY'RE ENGLISH. Why the hell would you bash something else for being English, jerk?

  • just got this dvd combo with a little princess..10 bucks at fye..cant beat that..loved them both when i was a kid and still do

  • I love this scene and I love this film

  • so cuutee

  • SO cute. I totally wanted Dickon and Mary to grow up together and fall in love. Maybe Colin could have found a nice girl too and the 4 of them could live a perfect little life lol

  • i love the music

  • ........Hey! (soz i had to)

  • This is so cute.

  • call me crazy but I wanted Mary to be together with Colin. would that be considered as incest?

  • Definitely. I believe they were first cousins.

  • I don't think it was considered that weird back then but I still think it's a bit gross because I think Mary and Colin will grow up together as siblings after this. I also just love the idea of Mary and Dickon together. Dickon is one of the most lovable characters in lierature.

  • i love kate maberly

  • i first saw this movie when i was 7 and now im 15 and i still loved this part so funny but i like collin hes just misunderstood

  • Dickon and Mary are adorable! Colin is a little brat

  • I loved that scene! Even as a kid, I always had the urge to slap Colin for his little attention-whoring here. Dickon = <3

  • This song is "Leaving the docks". :

  • does anyone know what this song is ?

or is it just part of the movie and not a actually song?

  • i love the way dickon and colin both want mary

  • i have never sceen the movie but i have read the book, is the movie as good as the book?

  • This is one of my favorite movies of all time

  • this is so beautiful

if there was a secret garden 2 mary wood probz marry dickon that wood be sweet aww

just to think colin alredy is thinking about marriage at 10 yrs old ! lol

  • There is a 2nd movie but is is realy crap :(

i don't think is was based on a book, they just made it up.

Mary gest married to so rich guy who you don't even see, dickon is old and he ends up with the maid girl who made a joke about all the dresses being black, and colin's dead before the film even starts!

The film is soooo crap! lol

I think your idea is better :)

  • the maid girl [martha] is dickon's sister

  • Eeek! You say he ends up with his sister?! O_O

What a strange and depressing story! I haven't seen the sequel and you just convinced me not to. It sounds awful!

This one is great, though. I saw it for the first time when I was a kid and it has always remained one of my favorites. I even bought the book recently and I intend to read it soon. :)

  • There is a sequel????????????' OMG I soooo want to watch it!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for this comment cause if it weren't for it I wouldn't know there was a sequel and I totally loved this movie when I was a kid.

  • I think I just found the trailer and I can send it to you, but don't be too disappointed: it seems that most people who saw that movie think it was terrible!

  • Oops, sorry! NOW I've found it. ^^'

It's all veeeeery confusing, because I just did a little research and there's "RETURN to the Secret Garden", which is the title of both a book that got very negative reviews AND a movie that has supposedly little to do with this one, and there's ALSO "BACK to the Secret Garden", another movie that appears to be a sequel of this story, but based on a TV adaptation of the original book instead of on THIS movie)... I think. o_O

  • LOL I did the same thing the day I posted my previous post, it is real confusing my research didn't amount to much, will see the links you sent me thank you!

  • No problem. I just hope I didn't make it sound even more complicated than it already is! XD But I'm glad if what I found helped a little.

  • Its not a sequel it was made in 1987, there is no sequel technically.

  • my friend loves dis movie

  • hey! hey! hey! lol...

  • Aw. They're all so cute!

I use to watch this movie a lot when I was little.

  • God I loved this movie as a kid, I loved Mary's clothes. My mom thought I was weird because it was so dark and obscure (the movie) for a really little kid to watch. It always made me cry at the end. If you search Heydon Prowse (Colin) and watch the "Mr. Maxed Out" video, that's him now. Lol.

  • I believe colin was mary's cousin, isn't he? Her uncle, perhaps on Mary's fathers' side, was the owner of the land. Besides, Colin is spoiled and he'd be more likely to envy every good thing in Dickons life just as it happened between Fernand Mondego (the rich man) and Edmond Dantes (the poor man) in The Count of Monte Cristo.

  • Mary's uncle was married to Mary's mother's sister. So It would be on here mother's side.

  • this is a beautiful movie :) i loved it.

  • great score. if anyone knows where to find it, I'ld appreciate it.

  • @mida11: you can find some of the music on the secret garden myspace =]

    -----------

this is an amazing scene thankyou for uploading.

  • they look adorable together Mary And Dickon

  • ha ha ha i dont know who she should be with she is cute with both of them of course she ends up with colin i think but he is spoiled i think she should probably end up with dickon! hes cool!

  • segun esto ella se enamora de dikon pero segun la pelicula 2 q nada q ver ella se casa con colin y dikon siempre le lleva flores a su tumba

  • that was the cutest scene ever!!

  • i love this story. :]

  • why do some of these people on here say colin and mary should get together uh no! there are a few reasons, 1. there cousins, incest anyone. 2. he's so whiny i can't stand it i'm surprised she can 3. dickon is much cuter and you can PLAINLY see that they like each other, she sees colin as family.

  • if they werent cousins they'll be cute together

  • yes... in italy too

but in the book colin didn't love mary

  • I tivo'ed this movie on the Hallmark Channel a couple of weeks ago and was disappointed that this scene was cut out. I know editing for time is important, but I really wouldn't cut a single scene from this film, especially this one.

  • I love mary and colin together!! So cute.

  • I cant stand colin! He is really ugly...mary and dickon make such a cute couple! <3

  • they are cousins i am in the play as mary lennox And just reread the book and yes they are cousins but all the books are different i have read all of the the different kinds they are all different

  • Also, no one gets married at the end of the book because Mary, Colin, and Dickon are all still children. The book ends w/ Mr. Craven coming back and reconciling w/ his son and visiting the Garden.

  • nobody gets married, but there is a proposal, like a silly childhood promise some kids have with their best friend or something that they never follow through on but stay close with. of coarse there was no marriage, the book was about discovering self past not romance!

  • I'm reading The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgeson Burnett (1911)for my thesis at college and in the second chapter (Mistress Mary Quite Contrary), Mr. Craven clearly states that Captain Lennox was his wife's brother, making Mary his niece (page 16).

I read your earlier comment and you said the book in your literature class read more like a screenplay? Perhaps you read the play version of The Secret Garden and not the actual novel?

  • I'm reading the book right now, and they're cousins in the book as well. Mary's father was the brother of Mrs. Craven.

  • yup i read the book and they are related I guess there are different versions...

  • what's the name of the book??

    I don't remember reading that

  • my favorite scene.

    beautiful

  • i thought in the book colin was mary's cousin, they couldn't get married. i could see dicken and mary though when they got older!!!!

  • in the book colin asks mary to be with her despite the fact that they were family. it may be, uh, strange, for lack of a better word; but colin didn't know any other girls at the time and felt that she was the most understanding, kind, and cared for him more than anyone else.

  • but i dont remember reading that in the book, in fact it wasnt in the book. how many different books are there? or is there a second book because in the original book there was no romance between mary and dicken or mary and colin. besides, there so young.

  • Yup. I think he didn't really realise that what he felt for her wasn't romantic love, just a very strong friendship bond.

But also, I think that in those days marrying your cousin was a bit more common. It was accepted, many people did it.

  • You mean Dickon or Colin?

  • do u no the names of the real guys who play Dickon nd Colin

  • colin was heydon prowse and dickon was andrew knott. x

  • andrew knott is pretty damn hot now, i reckon he is ready to play an adult dickon

  • lol

  • i saw this with my class everyone stared to lafgh
