Floskate, can you explain a bit about this footage? It doesn't look like it's from the Shinoda documentary, but it has Japanese characters when so it must be for a Japanese audience.
@Sephiroth9611 This is from the Japanese original broadcast. However, judging with the male overdub, this edited version probably was on the air later as the looking back. I think the commentator was Miwa Fukuhara who finished 5th at 1964 game. The first free skater was Kazumi Yamashita, Japanese Champ, who finished 10th here. Fukuhara gushed on Janet "She was just like a pixie, the fluidity of her movement is beyond any comparison. And her program is so intricate without much of crossovers."
@acatinny Thanks for the information, I appreciate it. We all know Janet was a brilliant free skater. I am more interested in what they had to say about Trixi's figure at the start. :)
@Sephiroth9611 For this game, both figure and free skate were broadcasted in Japan, which probably happened for the first time and the last time, as the coverage was carried by NHK, the national public TV station. The male narration you hear during the school figure seems to be added later for NHK's documentary program or something. What he said about Trixie was pretty generic, "Among ladies, as expected, the world champ Schuba got a formidable lead with her calm performance during the figure.
@Sephiroth9611 As Schuba who was called a drawing machine, she drew very precise figures on the ice. After the school figure, her lead was almost 120 point. Therefore the focus of this competition became how Magnussen or Lynn can narrow down this gap."
@MrDolenz you mean how did Trixie win? Total points system, simple as that. She was over 130 points in the lead after figures so she could have zambonied the free and still won. She actually skated ok, just popped her double loop I think. Worlds was worse where she was 9th (NINTH!!!) in freeskating but still won due to her overwhelming lead in figures.
Good Lord, not even close. Concerto in F could almost be considered one of those overused pieces of music, it's been skate to so often. Emily Hughes in the 2006 Olympics, Underhill and Martini in the 1984 Olympics and winning 1984 Worlds with it, countless others to be sure. Toller Cranston had a pro program to it.
