  • How can you treat social anxiety when you're severely depressed due to years of loneliness?

I don't think social anxiety can be treated, if one lives in social isolation, like myself.

We have to make dramatic changes in our lives as well. I'd like to hear the opinions of others. Thanks in advance..

  • I think you are on the right track in your thinking. No matter what severity of social anxiety (SA) or depression you begin with, the process is the same. While living in isolation you can begin to do cognitive therapy, it will not get you over SA in itself. There isnt usually an aha moment that you overcome social anxiety in isolation and then just to begin to live a life free of it. The behavioral portion of CBT needs to be done with other people

  • Many people at the social anxiety institute move from around the country in order to create the environment to have a support group to overcome SA. For some people it may begin with contacting just one person in their area and slowly working their way up their own hierarchy of needs related to SA and if possible finding a group in their area.
