i can't stand gastineau. he started the whole celebration after a non scoring play thing. Now someone tips a ball or runs for 10 yrds they act like they won the superbowl. I always admire Joe Klecko for calling gastineau out for his gay celerbration dance and what a selfish thing it was.
Does anyone remember in the following year after this Playoff Game when the Rams went to Shea Stadium to play the Jets? Mark Gastineau sacked Vince Ferragamo and then did his little "Sack Dance", and boy did it piss off the Rams! A big fight ensued thereafter. Fines and suspensions came next.
Even today, I'm still laughing about it. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha .
Yes I remember watching that game and Jackie Slater [HOF OT for the Rams then] slammed Gastineau's sorry ass to the ground. A big fight ensued and then Gastineau looked really stupid after that. Nice to see someone hand it to him. They changed the rule on celebrations that off-season cause of his stupid lame dance.
All I remember about Asstineau is him crying his eyes out when Bridgitte Nielsen dumped his ass!!! How pathetic!!! The real star lineman from that Jets team was Joe Klecko!!!
What a tackle, pinning the ankles together, all while being tackled by the right tackle. I'll never forget him walking away from the Jets mid-season in 88, and the Jets still had a shot with this same core of players. But when he had it going he was as tough a speed rusher as there was. The ultimate prick Don Shula made sure to slow both Gastineau and Freeman McNeil the following week in the AFC title game.
@Jelperman Wrong. Gastineau didn't even start in 1979 and only had 2 sacks for the year. The Rams' Jack Youngblood had18 sacks during that same season.
I won't count 85, since Youngblood had retired by then, but the totals speak for themselves:
Gastineau had 80.5 sacks to Youngblood's 64.5 from 79-84. Youngblood had a safety and 3 fumble recoveries while Gastineau had 5 recovered fumbles -two of which were returned for TDs.
@Jelperman So? I can look up stats, too. I was just pointing out that Gastineau's "reign of terror" started in 1980, not 1979. Not knocking Gastineau...just setting the record straight.
@Jelperman - BEST defensive end in FOOTBALL??? HAHAHAHAHAA...
He was totally 1-dimensional just trying to get upfield EVERY play. The guy was killed on running downs. The only credit he deserves is being one of the first NFL DE's to try to pad his numbers in an age where they barely started making a big deal out of it.
@Edd1e8 Really? When exactly was he "killed on running downs"? The Jets were very good against the run back then, and the average per carry was LOWEST for runs that went to Gastineau's side.
You're peddling fact-free BS that was debunked over 20 years ago in Football By The Numbers.
@Jelperman - what numbers? I didn't know they tracked that stuff.
I watched plenty of football in the 80s and NEVER remember Gastineau being touted as being even decent against the run by announcers and other players. Not saying analysts are always right -- I'd be interested in a different perspective. I remember even Paul Maguire (not necessarily unbaised LOL) showing replays on NBC's pregame shows where Gastineau would get absorbed by an OL or not stay at home on run plays.
@Edd1e8. Deacon didn't like the run nor did many pass rushers. Mark just couldn't make the adjustment of the pass to the running back and a TE chopping him on the weak side on 3rd downs. He would sulk.

Up until the Jets recently beat the Patriots in the playoffs this was their biggest upset in the playoffs since the Super Bowl 3 win.

So?
In 1980 they both had 11.5
81 Gastineau had 20, Youngbood 12.5
82 6-4
83 19-10.5
84 22-9.5
I won't count 85, since Youngblood had retired by then, but the totals speak for themselves:
