You're in the key of E minor, which is the relative minor key of G Major. That being said, F# is the leading tone(7th) of G Major, so if you were to stack thirds above F#, a diminished triad (F#, A, C) would be created.
i have tried to harmonize a riff in a natural minor but whenever i try harmonize it it sounds terrible? why? i tried move up 3-5 notes on the fret board but they all sound terrible.
When he inverted the F# triad(F#, A, C#), why did he change it to D major? I thought inversion is when you change root note with your 3rd or 5th? I need help plz? Anyone? How did he get D major?
Are you sure the major third isn't the other way round from what you said? As in if the melody is E F# G, then the major third would be G A B? G A B would be in G major if played on its own, hence it being the major third within the minor key? I'm not sure but that is what I got taught... Anyway man great video, long live Bodom.
its still really easy to hear... for me anyhow, its nice to actually be taught with it on for once i think... cause thats how im gonna end up using it yano
here is the easy way to do it.... take a power chord and use the second note to get your fifth..... thats why its notated E5 or G5, the 5 stands for fifth.
go learn one scale.. just one. then practice it over and over and over until you can play it perfectly.. play it everywhere on the neck....
learn the notes you are playing as you are practicing. you will get all of the information you need from doing this....when you can play it fast and clear everytime you play it, move on to another one.
Hey sorry for the ridiculous question since im still learning theory but at 2:03 when you said you were gonna play in the key of E minor you said " E F# G A B C D" i thought the formula was 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 1 so wouldn't it be " E F bG A B C D E?
Sure man, no problem. The formula you have is slightly off though. For a minor key, you start with the root, and then you have the following intervals: W, H, W, W, H, W, then W to start over at the root. So you start at an E, then the first interval is a whole step, so you get an F#. The next is a half, so a half step from an F# is G, etc.
the minor scale formula should be(in step-intervals) (W-whole step, H-half step) [root-W-H-W-W-H-W-W-W-H back to root]
which should mean that the key of E minor is (E F# G A B C D E). (E F bG A B C D E) the 1st three notes are all half step intervals which means that the scale you're talking about isn't a Minor scale.
The formula you gave would result in: E F# A B C D E F# G, which goes past the octave. You can remove the last two intervals. The first three notes are not half step intervals. The intervals between E and F# is a whole step, The second interval is from F# to G, which is a half step. The third interval is from G to A, which is a whole step.
i like to break all the rules to the point to where it sounds like i dont know what im doing, which i dont. but serioulsy, good lesson. top notch! YAAAAHHH!!!
oops===I forgot to ask---if you're trying to figure out the whether the harmonized third should be a major third or a minor third, couldn't you just say to yourself, "okay, I'm in the key of D major which consists of a D, E, F#, G, A, B, C#" and then, say when you're trying to harmonize the A note of the D major scale, you could say "oh, the C has to be sharp because the C is sharp in the D major scale? or is that exactly what you just taught??
I was trying to figure out how to harmonize thirds on my fretboard, and decided to try to figure it out on manuscript paper--and I don't write music--and, long story short, I ended up totally understanding how to read chords on sheet music, AND I learned how to harmonize in thirds! Anyway, you have a great personality and you're a good teacher...I kinda wish you would turn down the distortion a bit--but maybe that's because it's 12:30am and I have a headache! :) good lesson!
When I harmonize, instead of figuring out which 3rd, minor or major, you just have to count up 2 notes of that scale. So, for e-, if you're playing a an e, you dont have to figure out minor or major, you just count up, f#, g, and there you have it.
Well done, I have enjoyed your lesson very much. You have a good pace in what you are doing there, keeps momentum of the lesson. And your lesson in this video is pitched right for those who has intermediate knowledge on Intervals and chords. You do not pause too much between the topics you are discussing. This is great stuff man. I REALLY wish I knew more about music theory. I'm curious: you said that you don't have any formal music training, so where/how did you learn all of this?
I have two questions. Wouldn't the F# A C triad still be diatonic in the key of E? It would just be a ii dim chord. Two, when you invert the harmony are you using an inverted 5th? and I guess a third question, what are you talking about when you say the 7th and the octave at 6:00? what are the intervals between those notes. Does it not work just harmonizing that riff in diatonic thirds?
Well that triad is in the key of E, but it would sound weird because F# and C are a flat fifth interval away, instead of a perfect fifth. Yes, it's an inverted fifth. What I'm saying is it might sound nice to harmonize the 4th and the 5th of the scale with the 7th and the octave of that scale. It might help to look at the tabs on my website for some more information.
Thanks man. I understand now. lol. I didnt realize that you were talking about the scale degree.Sounded like you were talking about the interval above the root. Its all good.
Sure dude, thanks! You just take a chord, and make one of the notes the lowest note. So for example, if you play an E minor triad, it's E G B, in order from lowest to highest. You can invert it by playing G, B, E in order from lowest to highest.
All of the notes are harmonized with 5ths, except for those two highest ones. The notes on the lower voice are B and A, and I technically harmonize them with 4ths, which are E and D respectively. But playing a B and E, and a A and D together are also inverted 5ths.

Man you really have to do a pinch harmonics lesson, you have some of the best I've heard. I can make the noise on occasion but can't get any sort of consistent squeal or anything.
PLEASE tell me you're doing one soon!
devilmonkey471 3 years ago
Thanks dude! Yes, a pinch harmonics lesson is coming up.

yea children of bodom uses some of the weirdest progressions i have ever seen, i can usually get the basic gyst of what bands are doing by listenin but cob's guitars, although amazing, seem to make no sense, its so hard to sit down and tab them out
but great lesson

Sure dude, I use D'Addario 11's, all the time.
RedSGShredder 3 years ago
I've found that 11-50's to 11-54's work extremely well for Drop C Bodom.
