  • I will never forget the amazing appearance of Hans Reichel in 1989 as the winner SoundPage Reader's contest (or something like that) at Guitar Player's Magazine. His track was unique, far-out, showcasing his extraordinary multi-talents: designing and building innovative instruments, comosing, performing avant-garde music. I kinda lost track of his work. I'm happy I came accross the word 'daxophone' and that made a click!

  • I love the way the tongues look. They're so nice, like for hanging on your wall, or, well, playing a daxophone.

    Hans' voice is total sex.

  • I still remember a GuitarPlayer Magazine in 1989 that had Hans 'soundpage' that literally blew my mind away!

  • Sound like HORSE SEX!!!

  • What a weird, crazy, amazing instrument.

  • I commented on another dax video, that Spike Jones would have LOVED this thing... pity he's not around to hear it.

  • wow how much do these go for?

  • Actually, with a fair bit of effort and patience, it is much more economical to build one yourself. They aren't particularly hard to construct, There are some plans floating around the internet.

  • Nice and spacey sound. Absolutely fascinating!

  • .. sounds like someone farting...

  • BTW, I'd love to see Hans play some guitar on Youtube. I don't know if he still plays guitar, but if anyoen has any video footage, I'd love to see it, especially if there's any footage of the "fret behind the bridge" guitars.

  • I seem to remember seeing the guitars your talking about on TV about 25-30 years ago, but from memory the frets were between the bridge and the front pickup, you could hammer on with your fretting hand then change the scale length by fretting the mini fretboad between the bridge and pickup

  • You're talking about a different guitar than I am. He's got one with a fretboard between the pickup and the bridge (a couple of them actually). He used those guitars on the records Bonobo Beach and Death Of The Rare Bird Ymir.

But he also has several guitars with a fingerboard behind the bridge. These are the guitars he's playing on records like Lower Lurum and Cocobolo Nights. Reichel wrote an article that appeared in Guitar Player in 1989 about the "fret behind the bridge" guitars.

  • Ahh! Ok, in my defence I only sorta caught on TV and it was 25-30yrs ago, David Torn does a type of dual string before/after bridge thing on a teaching video I have somewhere, he plays it koto style

  • Sheesh! I've done it again sent half a post, Torns guitar is tuned to a pentatonic minor and the bridge is placed on the fretboard so the other side is a 5th higher (if that makes any sence?)

  • I forgot to say , you can get a similar sound by hammering on and using a metal slide between the bridge and front pickup (make sure the other pickups are off, or at least in front of the slide)

  • Yeah, that's true, but it's very limited in what you can do in compared to what Reichel does with his fret behind the bridge guitars.

  • There's a track on the album Lower Lurum, where he did several overdubbed daxophones, creating a sort of a Klingon choir effect. I swear it's one of the funniest things I've ever heard.

  • such a amazing instrument. so cool

  • kick ass
