its like everthing a bass player could want: a amazing bass player doing arco, a legendary bass player doing pizz, and possibly the best electric bass player of our time, all playing on the same stage at the same time. (R.I.P. Ray Brown)
Edgar Meyer amazing classical abilities uses in jazz, Ray Brown 100% pure jazz virtuoso, Victor Wooten great soloing but minus for not playing basline during Ray Brown solo or maybe he was just so impressed and keep on stering. Great technique but I don't like the sound of his bass instead of Marus Miller :-) It's my private and humble opinion.
@Gabepaullikegirls The vast majority of Vic's playing on Youtube is NAMM footage or just the fastest slap section from a gig, if you want to get a better view of his playing listen to the Flecktones or Extraction with Greg Howe, in both of those groups he still solos alot but lays down some fuckin' solid bass the vast majority of the time.
um....it jazz. That pretty much means improv. If you look at the history of the jazz guitar and you get stuck pre 1940...the role of the guitar (banjo thing and up to the archtop) was pretty much to act as a rhythm instrument or snare. Progress my friend. The role of the bass is to hold down the fort, but my guess it is bc that is what the left hand does on the piano.
Its all about interplay anyway not just being some douche behind the scenes.
@Gabepaullikegirls While i think the comment about vic was unnecessary, I completely agree with you. It is the main function of the bass, to keep time and underline the harmony. Its one of the hardest roles in a jazz ensemble.
@Gabepaullikegirls Anyway you're clearly just fresh out of music school and have all these ideas your teachers told you about what bass is and how bass is played. So I'm not going to waste any more time with you, though I will say I hope you apologize to all the great video posters whose videos you've shat upon. you know, when you come to your senses.
@Gabepaullikegirls I know educated jazz bassists. They understand that there's more to the bass than what you're taught in jazz school. Someday you'll get over this, and realize what a complete tool you were on youtube.
@Gabepaullikegirls you sir are a jazz troll. The worst kind of troll, because it means you try to be smart. Can you post your address so we can all fly to your town and beat the shit out of you? thx fatty

When it comes to tone and feel, Ray easily demonstrates here why he's the king of bass. Edgar and Victor have chops to burn, don't get me wrong, it's just Ray's sound is, well, better.
@jazzman31415 Your right. This is Ray's bag though where as it isn't as much for edgar and victor. I find Edgar's pizz tone really annoying in this actually.
It would have been cool if Milt Hinton would have been thrown in the mix. Pops could really slap on a dog house. He created some very cool techniques and styles. He's got some cool clips on here too!
@paulibaer So right - Ticking, buzzy, thin, and he's not in the pocket with Ray's groove either. Wooten just seems mediocre here. Yet in his own projects he's one of the very greatest, with chops to die for. I guess anybody can have a bad night.
@childsplaymusic au contraire, I thought that all that really added effect man, it was a really funky jazz improv, which is what he is known for, but ya, Ray Brown can make anyone sound like they are having the worst night of their lives, haha
Three legendary bass players. Thank you for posting this video. Ray Brown a jazz legend. Edgar Meyer an amazing cross over artist in classical and bluegrass/jazz. Victor Wooton one of, if not, the best electric players alive.
It's really much simpler than that. Victor's the best electric bassist, Meyer's the best classical bassist, and Brown is the best Jazz bassist. That's why it's so cool having all three in one video. Some of these comments I've read sound like they were written by people who measure their penis daily.
"ray brown has some chops but he is not even in the same ballpark as wooten or Meyer"
That's the dumbest thing I think I've ever heard anyone say.
Ray Brown is one of the finest bassists that has ever played the instrument; a body of work spanning sixty years. They are all good, why say something so ignorant. haha
Listen to his work on "After Hours" with Andre Previn just for starters . I've seen him up close live and he's got more rhythm in his little finger than I've got in my whole body.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lol @ victor wooten "making a fool of himself", ray brown has some chops but he is not even in the same ballpark as wooten or Meyer. Look at the age difference and the ability level...They are ridiculously talented, and nice people, but your comment sounds like something a fucking jealous, washed up armchair musician would spittle, fuck you!
@jsxtal Who WOULDN'T make a fool of themselves next to Ray? Only person I've ever seen that could stand toe to toe with Ray was Niels-Henning. I prefer Niels, but both were the kings of upright. I mean they were so good Oscar Peterson couldn't even chose which one to take on tours, so he would take em both! haha
I got to shake Victor Wooten's hand once....I nearly pooped.
