These are great I had some that were really similar be carefull when racking because if the cheap plastic slots that u place them into break its a pain to rack them
Great review. I wanted the Bowfles's for christmas, but i believe my wife watched your review and got me these. Only thing is that they are branded "Weider". Same weights thought. Beset decision she could have made. I like these 100X more than i would have the bowflex.
Now that its about a year later since you posted the vid, how are the weights holding up in regards to durability? The plastic tab/lock holding up? No plates fallen out during use? Do you still favor these over other adjustable dumbbells?
Hey, thanks for the review. I have been using Powerblocks and think they are pretty nice, too.
I wouldn not by the Bowflex; although, I have a Revolution. Many people say the plates on the Bowflex® SelectTech® 552 & 1090 get loose and drop, which could be pretty dangerous overhead.
Watched your video and it convinced me to purchase. I first bought the Lifesmart dumbbells, but they were HUGE so I took them back. I went to Sports Authority about 60 miles away and purchased the Gold's Gym dumbbells and they came with a free Gold's Gym bench (149.99 value). I got them home and immediately WD 40'd them and the handles and everything works great. I am very happy with the purchase....thanks!!
Thanks mate, I've been looking at adjustable dumb bells and there isn't much out there in terms of customer reviews and videos comparing different makes, so this has proved pretty useful in helping me to make an informed decision.
one question billa, i have dumbbells which use the locking nut (old style) and frequently 'drop' them down on a rubber mat after doing bench press etc. It isnt heavy dropping or 'throwing' by any means, but normally its like a foot drop to the floor.
how do these dumbbells hold up with drops here and there?
I wish there were dumbbells which looked like these (chrome look), had the easy switch knob like a bowlfex dumbbell, were as durable as an ironmaster dumbbell, and had some of the all-around easy switching features like a powerblock.
I purchased these weights yesterday and couldn't be happier. My local store had them listed for 349.99 but online they were 299.99 so they matched the price. I also had 15% off coupon. I used them for 2hrs last night and had no issues at all with sticking but I did use WD40 on them prior to use. I would highly recommend them over the bowflex. I did my homework and used both in store before making my purchase. I also purchased the 2yr extended warranty for $40 in store.
Most biased video ever. let me pick this apart. why do you need a stand its called a table. and lets take a look at which looks cool golds gym boring look or bowflex's alien looking ones. boom bowflex owns
i just want to clarify a misconception that i think can really help people out a lot in many aspects of home repair. WD40 is not a lubricant, it's a solvent. if you have a lubricant, say, on a bike chain. if u use WD40 it will remove that lubricant. it seems smoother due to the build up of dirt in that lubricant that u just removed. not trying to be a troll i just want people to be informed.
@grichey273 as I stated in the video they may be al little heavier which is nice because you get more weight that way. I have not actually weighed them so I do not know.
When you rotatate the dumbbells or use them in a fast motion do they feel sturdy still? Or seems like they're going to fall off? I'm considering getting these.
No one seems to carry these no matter what brand they are sold under. So,i bought the 25lb.er's and some platemates. They are now 30lb. for each.Great review though,thanks...
Good review. I don't know if it's been mentioned, but so far I've found three different brandings as the reviewer mentioned. The Golds Gym version which currently is no longer available online through sports authority, the Epic version from costco with the purple tabs and then the Weider version from sears with red tabs. All are identical aside from the stand branding and selector color.
sounds like a really biased review. On one hand, "Bowflex is crap!" on the other.. you can into an elaborate detailed description of the dumbells. lol
Just wanted to provide an update on the dumbbells. So far I have had them about 9 months and have used them pretty off and on. On average I get to them twice a week for a quick pump or if I miss the gym. Still very happy with them and have had zero problems. After 9 months and the initial lubricating I have not had any problems with sticking weight plates. Still highly recommend! :-)
This is the best dumbbell set you can buy for the price. Anyone who says they are crap because they stick just needs to take care of there investments. The first think I did when I got them was oil them with CRL Metal Lube (google it)
This stuff is the greatest there is no break-in time they work perfect everytime. And yes I did see the sticking when I first opened them. Great Video it made me go get a set.
I used a silcon dry lubricant, it can be picked up at wlamart it does smell for awhile and it leaves a white film but the weight have never gotten stuck on me and the selector is a lot smoother, i bought these 2nd hand from a guy that just couldnt live with the weights sticking together i paid 170 for them so i think it a good deal.
I was happy with my dumbbells until one of the selector pin plastic pieces broke. Dumbells have 90 day warranty after that you have to buy replacement parts. You must contact ICON the manufacture of the product for parts. The plastic selector is part of the handle part # 274214 ($102 + ship). They will not sell the part separate. The plastic selector by itself should only cost a couple dollars. Without the selector the dumbbell is worthless.

Bowflex runs promotions though--search for Bowflex coupons. I just ordered the Bowflex 552 and my coupon added the stand AND 5.1 bench for free. They also run free stand only promotions (ran both when I ordered but I found the better code). My total was $437 shipped including CA tax ($800+ full cost). I really needed a bench and also like the wheeled stand because they will be rolled into a storage room when not in use.
@TheBudhistpunk that's kind of a silly thing to say... it's easier to change the weight, yes, so that you can get to WORKING OUT sooner. so it's not lazy, it's efficient. there's a difference.
(3)i saw both of them next to each other and i got to try them both, bowflex weights felt more comfortable on grip, both are bulky as hell, the Gold's gym weights did disappoint me when i moved the lock on purpose while not in the rack & the metal plate got off of the dumbbell,it didn't fall to the ground, but it came off the bar witch made me change my mind about them.I tried to turn the dial on the bowflex(out of the rack)& it didn't let me,thanks for the help, but bowflex were better and cheap
(2) he aslo said "the bowflex weights are more secure than the Gold's(not Iron Gym, my bad on that one) Gym because their locking system makes it easier to pick up the weights or put them down because they will not let you move the dial unless they are on the rack so the weights don't fall off. Gold's Gym weights, for what ever reason it is, when the lock is moved while your curling or what not, it will drop the weight, so its kind of a bad situation you don't want to be in."
(1)hey billas333, i was lucky to get the Bowflex selecttech 552 at $321.00(taxes included) with the 25% off sale that sports authority was having, but umm despite that fact, i was speaking to one of the workers that works at sports authority in the weights section and he told me "buying the brand name stuff isn't really worth your money, but in this case, it would be better off to buy the bowflex weights because of the metal locking system, the Iron Gym uses plastic, so they are pretty fragile"
They look pretty good, but I would need at least 80's. I can't imagine how incredibly wide an 80 lbs set would be. Those are about the max width I'd want, for doing lighter lifts like curls.
thanks for the video man. i was looking into buying some dumbbells just like these. you mentioned gold's and epic.. i saw the same dumbbells at sears that were weider. either way, they look like nice dumbbells for the price. very helpful video!
true bro i dnt like the bowflex dumbells at all...its really frustrating tryin to workout when the weights keep clinging onto the side of ur body...when tht happens it just kills everythng.... bowflex sucks
i watched this video and liked what i saw so i bought them and saved a ton! because i used a coupon and all that great stuff. i used them for my P90X and they were perfect! i was able to change the weight fast when i needed and i also got a service plan for two years so if anything happens they come out to my place and fix it and if they can't then they replace it. the weights do stick at first but then the more you use them that problem goes away. i strongly recommend these dumbbells.
I have no problem with the weights falling out. The weights themselves have a hole through them which the sliding mechanism on the handle fits securely into. They cannot fall off the bar.
LOVED how thorough you were in the video! Thanks for reviewing the top two most popular items. I'm out to buy a pair of these and will comment soon! (I'll be the first girl to comment once I test these out!)
on other thing about these i did not mention. The picture shows the stand at an angle and that is incorrect. They sit completely flat on the stand not at an angle
@conspiracy83 To each their own, from what I checked out I found these to be the most user friendly. The powerblocks are awesome because they are more compact and not as long but the way the increment weights go inside the handle seems like a pain to change to me especially if you are doing a fast paced lift like p90x or something.
I think some places have them and others do not. I saw an ad in the local paper for them again a few weeks ago. I would just call a local store and see if they can get them in.
ICON Fitness makes this product with the Gold's Gym Label, Weider Label, & Epic Label. They are all identical except for colors. You can get them at Costco, Sears, & Sport's Auth. It has by far the best reviews.
I bought a pair of the Bowflex 552s from a lady whose husband never used them. I paid 250 and I hate them. I was looking at a set like yours at SEARS that had a different name also. They were called Weider Powerswitch and they also came with a stand for 300 bucks plus tax. I think I'll sell the Bowflex ones and buy those. Thanks for the review man.
They were just listed in the weights section on the website. They may have sold out of them and discontinued them I do not know.
I have never used powerblock however they do look nice because the length of the dumbbell adjusts with the amount of weight. However I was not a fan of the 2.5lb bars that slide inside the handles as incremental weight. That seems like a pain in the butt to me and looks like it would feel off balance. Plus i think the stand is extra with those as well.
@billas333 i actually went to sport aut. to check those out and i was not convince with its quality i mean its hard enough to switch the No# of lbs also i feel that the dumbell is to long and not well balance. I am 100% sure i am gonna get the powerblock sports 5.0 i found an authorize dealer webstore that sells for $299 w shipping now thats a steal especially for dumbell of that quality.
hey you i also checked and they are not online so you have to go the store.. i also will buy it and i found a instore coupon if you google sport authority instore coupon you will find a $25 coupon so the dumbell will cost you $301 out the door.
Thanks for the review. I purchased the Weider branded set (same thing) for $300 and like them a lot. Out of the box, I followed your lubricating advise and the weight changing mechanism works very smoothly. Thanks!
just a simple gadget, so not professional

i watched this video and liked what i saw so i bought them and saved a ton! because i used a coupon and all that great stuff. i used them for my P90X and they were perfect! i was able to change the weight fast when i needed and i also got a service plan for two years so if anything happens they come out to my place and fix it and if they can't then they replace it. the weights do stick at first but then the more you use them that problem goes away. i strongly recommend these dumbbells.

I have no problem with the weights falling out. The weights themselves have a hole through them which the sliding mechanism on the handle fits securely into. They cannot fall off the bar.

@billas333 do the golds gym ones come in the same 10-90 lbs like bowflex?

@marshall2411
I have only seen these dumbbells up to 50lbs

Is there any danger of the weights falling out? I cannot tell how if the locking mechanism is strong enough to hold the weights.

Man, I wish my weights got that heavy! Mine are stuck at 20 a pop. But for 20 bucks, I'm not gonna complain that much.

They were just on sale for 299.99 in store. Then I printed a 25 off coupon which covered sales tax.

How did you obtain your 100 dollars off coupon?

Great Review. My question is, where did you find these on their website?
I searched the Sports Authority website and cannot locate that pair of Gold's Gym adjustable db's.

hey you i also checked and they are not online so you have to go the store.. i also will buy it and i found a instore coupon if you google sport authority instore coupon you will find a $25 coupon so the dumbell will cost you $301 out the door.

Thanks for the review. I purchased the Weider branded set (same thing) for $300 and like them a lot. Out of the box, I followed your lubricating advise and the weight changing mechanism works very smoothly. Thanks!
