The world has to begin enforcing population restriction laws. Right now people can have as many children as they are capable of sustaining. Have you seen those people on TLC? Almost all of their shows feature people contributing heavily, with 6 children or more.

Overpopulation was an issue 60 years ago during a different time in the development cycle, and after industrial development, birthrates drop. III. As for hunger, The World Food Programme lists the main causes for world hunger:

We will need to adopt alternatives, like geothermal, solar and fusion. We will need as you said "Homes with gardens" we would also need vertical farming if we are to support more people. As you move away from the earth the gravity decreases highly resulting in the cable being almost weightless after around 100 miles above sea level, so yes space elevators could one day exist, what needs to be done however is to have a system where by the weight of the elevator and its cable does not simply fall back to earth, even if only 50 or so miles of cable is within gravitational pull they will cause the mass above the cable to fall to earth (the hovering space cities)

Infant mortality used to be much higher, i was just reading about how with life expectancy averages you need to seperate out those who live past 5 to get meaningful numbers.
With control over infant mortality, vastly reduced family size is essentail to compensate

- Petrochemical modern medicines.
- global transport allowing specialization to produce the above
- fossil fueled nutritional abundance

When oil runs out, we'll be back to that.

in 1st world I'm supported by fossil-fuel machines. only 2% of the population work producing food. Many have govt non-jobs, many producing un-neccassery luxuries. (whatever pecking-order social systems say r.e. taxation, savings, debt)

HYDROGEN IS CRAP its an energy CARRIER not an energy SOURCE. Fuel cells were invented around the same time as the internal combustion engine, guess what we didn't use them because they were crap (compared to the boost of burning through pre-stored energy).
Nature already figured out that OIL is a superior way of storing energy than hydrogen which is why algae & other plants/animals make those long hydrocarbon molecules in the first place.

Anyway.. the issue isn't energy for transport and gadgets - its the energy input into AGRICULTURE that is the really important bit. Even if 80% of the oil is wasted on luxuries, losing the last 20% that powers Food(fertilizers) is what dooms surplus billions to starve.

It ran to five volumes of peer reviewed data and is called the millennium ecosystem assessment. look it up.
We rely on a source of energy (fossil fuels) that we use faster than we replace, we are therefore unsustainable and yes overpopulated.

I agree that people need to consume less but many people can't do so and many won't, a better, faster and more effective alternative is to have smaller families voluntarily, it even saves people money for their pensions.

Seems to be some confused over what overpopulation actually means. It does not mean that there isn't enough physical room to exist in, it means that the environment is incapable of sustaining a population, in this case humans.
In other words, the talk is about how many mouths the earth can theoretically feed without starvation indefinetly. I've heard that only 4% of the earths land areal is farmable, That's the limiting factor, not the size of the earth itself.

The world has to begin enforcing population restriction laws. Right now people can have as many children as they are capable of sustaining. Have you seen those people on TLC? Almost all of their shows feature people contributing heavily, with 6 children or more.
I say that the whole world shou;d enforce a law allowing parents to have two or less children. The amount of people on earth is getting out of hand.

Overpopulation was an issue 60 years ago during a different time in the development cycle, and after industrial development, birthrates drop. Overpopulation is NOT a problem, and I really wish people who think they're addressing some terrible issue would stop following something blindly because it makes them feel good and start actually learning before forming opinion. Once the undeveloped world reaches the point America is now, low birth rate will be the whole world's problem.

The birth rates in the developed world have all dropped BELOW the minimum requirement to sustain a culture. You don't even realize that right now, many parts of the world are threatened with dying out because of the LOW birth rates, and the only thing that keeps America's birth rates above the required level over 2.1 is because of Mexican immigration. Without them, at this rate America will die out.

TFR = 1.0 would get the worlds population to a safe level after the end of my natural life (~2060) which would mean a much brighter future for anyone being born between now and then.
TFR = 1.5 would take longer (problem fixed 2100).

@walter0bz how many people would now be supporting the elderly if we did that ? Each year we let that go by you would ethier have to kill off the elderly or leave them in the cold. We have social society in america because the general populus allows it by paying in. Which is why we are having a current problem in the healthcare system because of baby boomers. They are not the only places though Canada and Japan, Finland, Russia. All having the same problem. What will you do ?

To make more food, you dont need more farmers - you need more OIL for the petrochemicals that drive modern agriculture. (in the modern world, we have technological unemployment, since machines do most of the real work, using Oil,then people compete with eachother in a 'popularity contest' e.g. service industries)

their GOVERNMENTS are having the problem, because they're running out of TAXPAYERS.
this is not the same as actual resources.
in terms of the real observable physical world, fewer people means more land and fuel per person. more choice where to live.
too cold? move somwhere warmer! oh you can't because its fucking overcrowded there so you need to dig up FOSSIL FUEL for heating.
