  • No, they are not brothers. Rob is the younger cousin of Bruce :)

  • So glad I got to see this band back in their hay day when this song first came out at IRVING PLAZA in NYC.

  • I love this song, it's so beautiful and atmospheric. First time I've ever seen the video. Wow the lead singer's eyes are scary! Looks like they're going to fall out, I love the lady in the red dress, she's sexy. Great music video, very artistic. I remember mixed tapes too, I would say that mixed tapes on tape are still far more enjoyable then mixed CD's at least that's what I think. Catherine Wheel rules!

  • incredible words to this one, great song!

  • Wow. This shows the allure of a drug to me. At least that's how I see it. Very interesting. Love this song.

  • The whole Chrome cassette was great, Crank, and Nude were two of my favorites from it.

  • LOL I had it on cassette too...we're old... ;P

  • LOL,yes, I use to crank up crank on the morning drive/race to work, what a hoot.

  • LOL never owned this one on cassette, but I owned my fair share of cassettes back in the day. Remember when mix tapes were actually on ...TAPE?!

  • Shoot, I still have vinyl from back in the day...and I'm not THAT old LOL...and yes, mixtapes made with actual cassettes, it used to be such an art form...but I have to admit that it's SO much easier now to make playlists with YouTube, you don't have to keep erasing and starting over if you change your mind about a song choice or order LOL...yay technology...

  • THX - i was so taken w/ "chrome" that i wrote to the band, like a teenaged groupie, ha.

the guy with the red hair actually wrote back. i still have the letter.

i had never heard anything like Catherine Wheel up to that point. i still miss them.... :(

  • GREAT, that's cool one responded to you, the whole cassette was great, but you had to flip it to hear crank/nude, so I made a cassette with just those two over, and over for the whole cassette. What a laugh, music is so much fun.

  • Best new UK band of the '90s. I'm for Catherine Wheel reunited.

  • moorlock - i back u on that! the one time i went to see them, they CANCELLED!!!!!!! probably something beyond their control.

  • How unfortunate. I became a fan rather late, but started collecting the band around 1998 or so, and bought everything I could get my hands on. Saw the band live on their last tour in 2000. Fantastic. This band deserves a second chance. We need a reformation.

  • Lead singer is also the cousin to lead singer of Iron Maiden.

  • Reminds me of Middle School. I just thought of them earlier and I forgot how great they are.I love Catherine Wheel.

  • I only play this song when I'm blissfully happy. Just brilliant.

  • for me, one of the 5 best songs to 1993 but was ranked 95 for the rock radio station of my country - PERU

  • ...a pity MTV only aired this video on "120 Minutes". ...was that David Crosby wearing the overalls in the elevator? lol

  • Rob Dickinson (lead singer) has gone solo and will be playing a show in Austin in September. Looking forward to it.

  • Cool. These guys rocked.

  • So am I! Glad he finally made it to TX.

  • awesome.. gonna have to check that out

  • Sounds like Cerulean (who by the way reminds me of The Chameleons). Sorry to compare.

  • he looks like chris kattan

  • they should have plugged in there guitars...

  • One of the best groups ever. They should have been bigger.

  • Use to love them...what happened to these guys? lol

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing voice and a great melody!

  • I love this video!

  • The lead singer is gorgeous.

  • Chris Katan

  • haha

  • Looks more like Jude Law.

  • great band, HORRIBLE video.

  • This was the first song I ever heard from them on 120 Minutes back in the 90s. I have loved them ever since why they dont have more of a following I will never know

  • That's where i saw them for the first time!!! 120 Minutes is the best program in the whole tv programming. i'm still watching it, even though they play it at 4am. if it weren't for 120, i wouldn't know Catherine Wheel.

  • me neither, 120 minutes is great

  • Always seemed like Catherine Wheel should've been bigger than they were. They were kind of unknown in the States. I remember Ferment when it came out and thinking they'd be huge here, but... nope. They had a string of really strong albums, though-- and there are some popular alternative bands now that sound like they might've influence by them.

  • Bands like Interpol said they would not exist without the pioneering music of Catherine Wheel. I put there music on par with Nirvana.

  • Interpol, huh? Cool. Yeah, they were definitely a great band. One of the only acts from which I bought all of the albums.

That's why I was always surprised how they weren't more of a household name, like Nirvana. Their albums were all solid from beginning to end.

  • sexy bitch.

  • I like the Cameleons UK,too .They remind of these guys.

  • "I'm tired of sleeping" great line. Saw them in NYC @ Irving plaza in 95. Ferment is definitely an awesome album. Really moody and heartfelt.

  • Greatest english rock band of the last 20 years

  • My favourite album is ferment!!! It completely rocks!

  • most of their work is tortuered introspective stuff, Pink Floydish, I saw them at the 95 Hfxmas and Rob played wish you were here, Chrome is a great album they do not suck.

  • a Catherine Wheel is also a firework... it spins, probably got its name from the torture device for some weird reason. I assume these guys were going for that? I saw a picture of a band member standing near one of the firework wheels on the intartubeweb... you should image search it.

  • Maybe it's a subtle link to Rob Dickenson's cousin Bruce Dickenson from Iron Maiden.

  • Considering that all of the guys in the band are probably the same age as you, it's not like they're a bunch of kiddies that recording this video last week.

  • Fender Strat is an awesome guitar. That guitar can really make a band. Beautiful Noise.

  • this band is unreal.

    that's all I can say.

seeing them play many times in the 90's made my youth!

  • I had this on cassette; did not know the artist, as it was recorded off the radio sooo long ago... Dig it....Thanx for it...

  • God damn it I love this fucking song.

  • Bought "Chrome" in '94, and every other "CW" CD, and saw them live in D.C. twice in college. Still one of my top 10 bands.

  • I love this song.. this takes me back! ...I never realized what the video was about until now! I love it even more! Thanks for posting!

  • i was just telling my wife the other day i thought it was cool that i listened to 2 bands from great brittain named after torture devices and that the wheel had the same management team in the 90's that maiden did back in the 80's then i find out they are related. now it all makes sense

  • are Rob and Bruce really related? I heard that, but was never able to confirm it.

  • Yeap, they are brothers :)

  • Seriously? Bruce from IM and the singer for CW are brothers?

  • no, they're cousins.

  • Actually, they are cousins--not brothers.

  • hey too, the bassist is 3rd half-cousins from a previous divorce of Rob Zombies Aunt...aint that a coincidence?

  • I just found out this lead singer is the cousin of Bruce Dickinson...thats fucking awesome!!!

  • I saw this band in Reno, Nevada of all places during their Chrome tour. This song never gets old. What a band! Thanks for the tip on 50ft Monster. I'll take 50% of Catherine Wheel over much of what is out there today.

  • This song has some great power going on. Rock N Roll at its best!

  • Chrome was an awesome CD, and Rob is a very cool dude, always kind to fans.

  • I met them in Toronto once. Awesome band.

  • One of those rare songs that I never get tired of hearing. Beautiful.

  • I agree

  • yes yes yes

  • omg I never saw a catherine wheel vide before and I just realized he looks just like the last guy I dated. What an ass.

  • Behold ^^ Im Brians son. Cant belive there music had real fans!

  • Are you kidding? What makes you think that?

  • Other musicians know and respect this band, I do!!!

  • uhm, wow. that's pretty kick ass. I love love love catherine wheel, like a lot.

can you let your father know that 50ft monster is really good, but a catherine wheel back together would be greatly appriciated :) ?

  • Had to be one of my favorite albums throughout highschool...i waited for 120 minutes with dave kendel to air their videos

  • chrome rocked my world in high school. Awesome album.

  • Awesome song by a great Shoegaze act, but wow is that singer's look dated.

  • geile band!!!

    geiler song !!!!

  • allow EMBED !!!!!! gawd chicken

  • Catherine Wheel was such an important part of the soundtrack to my high schools years!

  • yeaah...this brings back my high school years

  • yep same here. love it.

  • Flawless!

  • Could they have been any more underrated?

  • wow, never thought i would find this!!! reminds me of that time right after high school, before college started and i worked at a pizza joint in a small town outside of buffalo...great tune.

  • great shit from my college days. i played "broken head" at the bar tonight and my buddy was like "what is this? it jams!" great sonic overlay of guitars on "chrome". amazing album.

  • I *love* Catherine Wheel, they're just great. I am so happy I can find this stuff! Thanks! *melt*

  • F'n LOVE this song.... It was also such a great song, live.

Anyone know where this video was shot?

  • In an elevator.

  • saw them in new orleans in the mid 90s.they were incredibly loud and hypnotic.i was on a cloud the whole show.absolutely blew me away.

  • I absolutely love this song... the band was so amazing. My old band used to cover this song. Saw them live in '97, still one of the most memorable shows I've ever seen.

Catherine Wheel married beautiful melodies with heavy alternative rock, which made for a very unique sound. I really miss this band, they deserved to be so much larger.

  • Yeah. I confess, for some reason this group slipped past me completely. I didn't know about them until the late 90s and I've liked their music ever since.

  • Saw them live in '93, opening for INXS. Musical erotica, so sublime & hypnotic I could barely stand. They deserved to be HUGE, but I suppose they'll have to settle for being gods.

Listen to Fripp from Chrome. A love song for the ages.

    Peace.

  • Ive been jamming out to this song since I was in high school in the 90's, but never saw the vid until now. Now I love it even more. Thanks for posting. Thanks Wheel.

  • I first heard of this song like last week. I'm addicted.

  • CLASSIC

  • One of my all time favorite songs! Thanks for posting!

  • First time I heard this song, back when it was released, gave me chills. Still does. Fantastic song.

  • awesome

the last supper, christs temptation in the garden the night before he died, and then the crucified...

    Very well done visually...

    Love it!!

and not all American's are so uptight!!

  • Also, let's not 4get: The Abrahamian God/Joseph The Carpenter, The Virgin Mary, various angels, Wise Men, Judges, Judas, Apostles, the shepherd holding his staff near the neck of the "Lamb" & the 4shadowing Eucharist & the Cross. I got the video's point on my 2nd viewing back in the day & when I realized what it was about I truly loved it! I thought it was so cool: a music video actually teaching a morality tale. But even if all Americans aren't uptight, some are, so I see why it was edited.

  • 120 Minutes used to play the shit out of this song. Love it.

  • SPOILER ALERT: OK NOW I GET IT! I see the difference from this & the US edit. On 2:57-3:07, he's on the actual Catherine Wheel (torture device & fireworks display). In the Jesus role, this symbolically makes him actually look like he really is dying while crucified. It was probably edited for the US, so as to not offend Christian sensibilities.

  • Which is weird, since the cross, the crucifixion and Christ's death (and resurrection) are absolutely essential to Christianity.

Regardless, after only owning 'Ferment' for years, I finally got 'Chrome.' What a ridiculously good album.

  • You're right, dude! Catherine Wheel takes me back to better days.

  • Well, yes -- but that's assuming that the subtext of this video is obvious from the start --

I mean, if I had a dollar for every time anyone in a video did a crucifixion pose with a microphone(Aerosmith, ...), looked skyward with a halo of some sort around their head (Chapterhouse ...) or had angel wings on (Annie Lennox ...) I'd be a millionaire. And yet none of those videos -- that I know of -- are telling the story of Christ. They're just borrowing a few of the motifs.

  • The difference between them and this one, is that this one isn't just borrowing some motifs from the story. It's actually attempting to retell it. Start to finish, cymbal for symbol. ..

  • One of their best songs, not video. Chrome is my fav CD of my whole collection and my collection is huge.

  • Lead singer is Bruce Dickinson's cousin...Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden fame, that is...

  • this brings me back...

  • I like the part where the girl in the red dress tries to touch his face and he moves away xD

  • That's because she's the female equivalent to Satan. It's the whole "Temptation of Jesus" metaphor.

  • LOL, pause it @ 59 sec.

  • Awesome song. The lead singer looks a lot like Jude law!

  • I hate it when you're on an elevator and then people start piling on, and then one of them has a drumset.

  • LOL! Nice. {{{{^_^}}}}

  • OUT STANDING!!!

  • This is from a great CD !! So msny great tracks !!!!! Thank you for posting,,,

  • cool toon.

  • The singer really freaks me out. He looks like my boyfriend--AHH!

  • Doing crank will not your conscience make clear. Cranking volume might. This song is so distant. I'm just realizing the background vocal track repeating off tempo. The guitar in the bridge blisters. Lots to learn from in this song.

  • soundtrackband, the song isnt about crank the drug, you dumb ass

  • I remember about 2 years ago I saw this video on VH1 Classic and then fell in love with this band!

  • Anyone else think Rob Dickinson sounds just like Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs at the bridge?

  • Yes and THANK GOD...Butler RULES

  • Rob can do no wrong, his solo work is awesome as well, flawless voice!

  • Got it on vinyl....what a fucking amazing song. (Outdoes Black Metallic in my opinion. But I'm drunk and that last statement isn't very well thought out) (Boy, Black Metallic is great, but the way the bridge pounds into your head in this track, that solo, sheesh.)

  • Loved the whole 'Chrome' album. Such a great song.

  • It just doesn't get old! I just love this song!

  • this is a freaking jam.

  • superb takes me back some

  • I was fortunate enough to play this song at my college radio station when it was brand new. It was a nostalgic time when creativity was still alive and well.

  • These guys never got the kudos they deserved, great band that noone (w/the exception of us here posting) ever heard of unfortunately. To bad their label screwed em...Dickinsons good solo though, saw him last yr in DC, good show!

  • Wheel was THE most under-rated band of the 90's, and for that matter, one of the ost of all-time. Thye got no exposure and their label screwed them! This song, the band and Rob Dickinson are awesome!!!

  • cracker song this!!!

  • I like the rythm, the sound of the guitar and the vocals voice awesome

  • I feel horrible for the sh*t kids listen to these days. Imagine songs like "Crank" being played on the radio and MTV at the time. Look what they're exposed to now...

  • I can't add much to what everyone else is saying. The best song of the '90s, and one of my favorites of all time.

  • Anyone that doesn't have "Chrome" on theit top 10 list is fuked...

  • Great album dude!

  • I agree. This album didn't have a single bad track. It's right up there with Radiohead's "OK Computer" and MBV's "Loveless".

  • still,to this day the greatest cd i own. i can still throw Chrome on and listen to it from begining to end. i miss Catherine Wheel.

  • I missed the 90's due to living and working overseas. Just started hearing this song on XM Radio. Love it.

  • OMG, I'm 16 again. This is soooo weird.

  • love this video, ..Just a awesome....thanks for posting/

  • the guitar... Futter is his name... The 90's Marr... and something more

  • no nick mccabe of verve was the penultimate 90's guitar hero

  • Gotta say the guitarist from Mansun (weird band though) was a lot better than this guy- but Mcabe is great.

  • Salfert -- Those "thumbs downs" are probably from people who've only heard Urban Hymns or the new track: both of which don't help Nick's case any. I'll never understand it: everyone who's heard "Northern Soul" says he's a genius -- so why won't the band they let him off his leash like that anymore?

But about this video: until I read it here, I had no idea! I mean, I got it that the cymbal was a halo and his pose was a crucifixion, but not the rest. I must have snoozed in sunday school...

  • I forgot how amazing that song is.

  • a disturbingly under-rated band, just Fn awesome

  • Catherine Wheel are GREAT!!!

  • always liked this better than "black metallic"

  • Bellissima!!!!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful song

  • Great song. Low production video.

  • what a lame video for such a great song!

  • This video was great when it came out... this came out when they were actually still making videos for bands. They had to go against all the "grunge" and "alternative" bands

  • They're so backwards,

  • Hey, hold up. Wasn't the Catherine Wheel an alternative band?

  • That's because this doofus doesn't get the concept. It's clearly a retelling of the life of Christ done entirely in an elevator. To me, this is really cool!

  • i wish this was on there myspace ^_^

  • i still love catherine wheel. :) never seen this video before. Thanks for posting, they were my fav in high school. :)

  • See previous statement.
