I love this song, it's so beautiful and atmospheric. First time I've ever seen the video. Wow the lead singer's eyes are scary! Looks like they're going to fall out, I love the lady in the red dress, she's sexy. Great music video, very artistic. I remember mixed tapes too, I would say that mixed tapes on tape are still far more enjoyable then mixed CD's at least that's what I think. Catherine Wheel rules!
Shoot, I still have vinyl from back in the day...and I'm not THAT old LOL...and yes, mixtapes made with actual cassettes, it used to be such an art form...but I have to admit that it's SO much easier now to make playlists with YouTube, you don't have to keep erasing and starting over if you change your mind about a song choice or order LOL...yay technology...
GREAT, that's cool one responded to you, the whole cassette was great, but you had to flip it to hear crank/nude, so I made a cassette with just those two over, and over for the whole cassette. What a laugh, music is so much fun.
How unfortunate. I became a fan rather late, but started collecting the band around 1998 or so, and bought everything I could get my hands on. Saw the band live on their last tour in 2000. Fantastic. This band deserves a second chance. We need a reformation.
This was the first song I ever heard from them on 120 Minutes back in the 90s. I have loved them ever since why they dont have more of a following I will never know
That's where i saw them for the first time!!! 120 Minutes is the best program in the whole tv programming. i'm still watching it, even though they play it at 4am. if it weren't for 120, i wouldn't know Catherine Wheel.
Always seemed like Catherine Wheel should've been bigger than they were. They were kind of unknown in the States. I remember Ferment when it came out and thinking they'd be huge here, but... nope. They had a string of really strong albums, though-- and there are some popular alternative bands now that sound like they might've influence by them.
most of their work is tortuered introspective stuff, Pink Floydish, I saw them at the 95 Hfxmas and Rob played wish you were here, Chrome is a great album they do not suck.
a Catherine Wheel is also a firework... it spins, probably got its name from the torture device for some weird reason. I assume these guys were going for that? I saw a picture of a band member standing near one of the firework wheels on the intartubeweb... you should image search it.

only reason i say that is because i was in a death metal band called Catherine Wheel back in the 80s way before these creeps even took music lessons. this band should really either change to death metal or change their name
Considering that all of the guys in the band are probably the same age as you, it's not like they're a bunch of kiddies that recording this video last week.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the band name would be perfect for a death metal band, since the catherine wheel was a medieval torture device used to break and sever limbs. this band really doesnt send any kinda message that says torture. i really dont get it.
i was just telling my wife the other day i thought it was cool that i listened to 2 bands from great brittain named after torture devices and that the wheel had the same management team in the 90's that maiden did back in the 80's then i find out they are related. now it all makes sense
I saw this band in Reno, Nevada of all places during their Chrome tour. This song never gets old. What a band! Thanks for the tip on 50ft Monster. I'll take 50% of Catherine Wheel over much of what is out there today.
wow, never thought i would find this!!! reminds me of that time right after high school, before college started and i worked at a pizza joint in a small town outside of buffalo...great tune.
great shit from my college days. i played "broken head" at the bar tonight and my buddy was like "what is this? it jams!" great sonic overlay of guitars on "chrome". amazing album.
I absolutely love this song... the band was so amazing. My old band used to cover this song. Saw them live in '97, still one of the most memorable shows I've ever seen.
Catherine Wheel married beautiful melodies with heavy alternative rock, which made for a very unique sound. I really miss this band, they deserved to be so much larger.
Yeah. I confess, for some reason this group slipped past me completely. I didn't know about them until the late 90s and I've liked their music ever since.
Saw them live in '93, opening for INXS. Musical erotica, so sublime & hypnotic I could barely stand. They deserved to be HUGE, but I suppose they'll have to settle for being gods.
Listen to Fripp from Chrome. A love song for the ages.
Ive been jamming out to this song since I was in high school in the 90's, but never saw the vid until now. Now I love it even more. Thanks for posting. Thanks Wheel.
Also, let's not 4get: The Abrahamian God/Joseph The Carpenter, The Virgin Mary, various angels, Wise Men, Judges, Judas, Apostles, the shepherd holding his staff near the neck of the "Lamb" & the 4shadowing Eucharist & the Cross. I got the video's point on my 2nd viewing back in the day & when I realized what it was about I truly loved it! I thought it was so cool: a music video actually teaching a morality tale. But even if all Americans aren't uptight, some are, so I see why it was edited.
SPOILER ALERT: OK NOW I GET IT! I see the difference from this & the US edit. On 2:57-3:07, he's on the actual Catherine Wheel (torture device & fireworks display). In the Jesus role, this symbolically makes him actually look like he really is dying while crucified. It was probably edited for the US, so as to not offend Christian sensibilities.
Well, yes -- but that's assuming that the subtext of this video is obvious from the start --
I mean, if I had a dollar for every time anyone in a video did a crucifixion pose with a microphone(Aerosmith, ...), looked skyward with a halo of some sort around their head (Chapterhouse ...) or had angel wings on (Annie Lennox ...) I'd be a millionaire. And yet none of those videos -- that I know of -- are telling the story of Christ. They're just borrowing a few of the motifs.
The difference between them and this one, is that this one isn't just borrowing some motifs from the story. It's actually attempting to retell it. Start to finish, cymbal for symbol. ..
Doing crank will not your conscience make clear. Cranking volume might. This song is so distant. I'm just realizing the background vocal track repeating off tempo. The guitar in the bridge blisters. Lots to learn from in this song.
Got it on vinyl....what a fucking amazing song. (Outdoes Black Metallic in my opinion. But I'm drunk and that last statement isn't very well thought out) (Boy, Black Metallic is great, but the way the bridge pounds into your head in this track, that solo, sheesh.)
I was fortunate enough to play this song at my college radio station when it was brand new. It was a nostalgic time when creativity was still alive and well.
These guys never got the kudos they deserved, great band that noone (w/the exception of us here posting) ever heard of unfortunately. To bad their label screwed em...Dickinsons good solo though, saw him last yr in DC, good show!

I feel horrible for the sh*t kids listen to these days. Imagine songs like "Crank" being played on the radio and MTV at the time. Look what they're exposed to now...
Salfert -- Those "thumbs downs" are probably from people who've only heard Urban Hymns or the new track: both of which don't help Nick's case any. I'll never understand it: everyone who's heard "Northern Soul" says he's a genius -- so why won't the band they let him off his leash like that anymore?
But about this video: until I read it here, I had no idea! I mean, I got it that the cymbal was a halo and his pose was a crucifixion, but not the rest. I must have snoozed in sunday school...
This video was great when it came out... this came out when they were actually still making videos for bands. They had to go against all the "grunge" and "alternative" bands
That's because this doofus doesn't get the concept. It's clearly a retelling of the life of Christ done entirely in an elevator. To me, this is really cool!
No, they are not brothers. Rob is the younger cousin of Bruce :)

This video was great when it came out... this came out when they were actually still making videos for bands. They had to go against all the "grunge" and "alternative" bands

Hey, hold up. Wasn't the Catherine Wheel an alternative band?

That's because this doofus doesn't get the concept. It's clearly a retelling of the life of Christ done entirely in an elevator. To me, this is really cool!
