  • Ive used a camera almost identical to that and the slot at the top is for a wireless mic receiver.

Also you asked for ideas on stuff to get for your lab. I think a small pencil camera so when your poking round inside something you can poke a small camera in to show us. Like when you were trying to show the heads on the drum

  • that connector you first took off is probally for a wireless microphone reciever

  • 15-pin d-sub might be for either MIDI or some kind of video stream output to an outboard module... i'm betting that since there is a wireless switch, that's where the wireless receiver plugs in.

  • 4:54 it's for a wireless receiver for microphones.

  • Would you mind checking the lenses and optics for radiation from thorium using your meters? I do not expect any but given the quality and age, just maybe it is present? Thanks.

  • Left Camera has more saturated colors...

  • LMAO Fox... affiliated with science... that's funny...

  • There are a number of different prism designs usually with 3 pieces of optical glass directly bonded to each other (One design I've seen has an air-space but it's an older design). My guess is the 3 ccd chips are all monochrome. Also, I am not surprised the ccds are bonded. With precision optics that whole assembly would be carefully constructed by hand.

Laser fanatics love those things. Get 3 colour lasers and put them together - you can draw!

  • i was thinking , couldnt they make three green infrared camera into a case and give them these things you call prism and then join them together (giving each camera a different hue) , giving them the right hues in post production

  • Given the chance, would Chris take apart a space shuttle for a video

  • @ExtremeSciences HELL YES!

  • @thegeekgroup I heard that they are sold for about 52 billion, or you could try going down to NASA and see if they have thrown out any old spaceships

  • @thegeekgroup

Well, the Shuttles that have already had their last flight are undergoing "DeMil" procedures in preparation for their eventual display as museum pieces.

Who knows... a few calls to the right people. Even a part of the Shuttle would be EPIC.

In a similar vein, have you ever tried getting in touch with Haynes or Chilton about getting involved on a photo shoot? They say that every book is based on a complete tear down... Then again, they do put it back together again :)

  • that is an awesomely huge camera. stick some bulbs in behind the colour filters and make a light show

  • For some reason, I was laughing my ass off when you were going back and forth between cameras explaining sync. Its almost like you rehearsed it. Props to the editor. (whom you gave a little extra work to)

  • Thanks... Nice Vid!

  • When I saw genlock i was like WTF before it was explained. A tad too much DragonAge, I guess

  • That prism has got to be one of the coolest things i've seen in quite some time.

  • "This is about as delicate as it gets" he says, as he reaches for his heavy-duty Gerber :D

Also, your video editor (Cory?) has been dropping the ball a LOT lately. Missing cuts, not following the action, ignoring cues, failing to provide captions/overlays...

  • why didn't you making a vid about the repair trail that would be awsome

  • and i was thinking about the screwdriver just as you said it lol i was just thinking of a battery drill (your nice yellow ones :P) with a long no2 Phillips head and/or a hex set of changeable ones

  • do you have a time table for the live videos? so i know when to tune in?

  • @HomeDistiller not yet, we typically shoot in the afternoons when we're in the studio.

  • @thegeekgroup Define afternoon.

  • @kildas That would be the time between Morning and Evening. Roughly 12:01H EST to 1800H EST.

  • @HomeDistiller good i had the same question

  • @HomeDistiller 1 to 5 pm in the last half of the week, and sometimes saturday, thats when you'll see me on set anyways :) meanwhile, live feed usually has action between noon and 5 every day of the week, if not videos like this, and near /on the weekends the shenanigans can go as late as 11 or midnight on occasion.

  • Nice video. The 'prism' isn't quite a prism - It's a color splitter. There are separate optical blocks inside the block that split off the colors, which are bonded together.

  • tool suggestion, a magnetic tray for all the screws

  • Best equipment autopsy ever!

  • I find it funny that you explain timecode really well at 17:00 but the cameras aren't white balanced, so when you do the hard cuts you're a white person then a red person then a white person then..... :) Awesome video, but get your wb calibrated!

  • The camera switching was soooooo crazy, but cool. And the prism is sweet. I would love to have one and have it light up my room.

  • what's the motor on the bench for?

  • @kris9850 watch the breadmaker video, its the one jsut before this one. :)

  • what,s the motor on the bench for?

  • @kris9850 It's the motor from the bread maker; the heating element is there beside it as well.

  • @kris9850

It's the motor out of a bread machine, their last autopsy!

    @TGG:

Best autopsy yet, bar none. Your enthusiasm is... infectious. Makes me want to find something to take apart. Camera 1/Camera 2 was trippy and the prism was awesome.

Oh, and at 4:30, I was thinking that socket might have been for a wireless adapter perhaps?

  • That prism is so sweet.

  • I watched the whole thing, I LOVE your equipment autopsies!

  • what is the link to the geek group's irc?

  • omg you broke the girber in....it snaped when you flicked it

  • Good Video..

  • 16:42 had to do it :)

  • @qwertyboy1234567899 HAHAHAHA nice dude, maybe it'll be blooped next april?

  • That Prism is possibly the coolest thing I have ever seen! It really makes you wonder how someone could have such an idea to split light into the 3 colours and project the image into 3 perfectly aligned sensors! If I tried to do something like that, i'd have a severe headache :P

Just goes to show how far things have advanced from sticks and fire!

    Thanks for sharing as always!

  • Oh god, the constant camera switching made me dizzy. Camera synchronisation is now etched into my brain.

  • i wish i had a tool room :D

  • 14:10 - Socket Head Cap Screw

  • a chainsaw !!!!!!!!!!

  • That prism... is awesome!

  • Oh god, craptacular screwdrivers... I've already broken dozens of them, except some extra-crappy ones that could not fit any screw head on earth, holy crap !

  • I just bought a Ryobi HP53LK @ Home Depot. The clutch WAS much too stiff. So much that the tool can't begin to make it slip on the higher settings with a full battery at sea level 70 f...... I modded it because I couldn't find any other unit that was so cheap that included an adjustable clutch, two speed with a light. $30 bucks.. If you want I can send you the details of the clutch mod to add ~6 more softer postions. Probably doesn't matter for only removing screws thought.

  • oh wow, that prism is just neat

  • Sick!! Old cameras are always awesome when they're in pieces. Great video guys!
