My state just got the education lottery a few years ago..it's laying off teachers, but, 2 new schools are under construction. I was told the lottery WON"T/CAN'T spend money on anything but NEW construction. Yet, commecials for the lottery say it has SAVED teachers jobs...

Also, there will be lots of ways for you to serve in a way that is meaningful for you, most of which has no connection to taxpayer money. Service actually is a great investment for our country--I urge you to look around your community for the AmeriCorps volunteers tutoring, mentoring, planting trees, etc. and all for little financial reward. Much work is done through service, and we should invest there.

That's great--you should also consider reading Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution, where it outlines some of the roles of the people through the government to work for the general welfare. I hope you don't read Obama's call to service as forcing you to serve--far from that. If there's a community issue you feel passionate about, that's a great opportunity to do something, but please don't feel that anybody would ever force you to serve--that's not American or what Obama's talking about.
