The rhythm is quite often wrong. The music is really cool because the accompaniment is playing 3 crochets in 3 beats, and the voice is supposed to sing 4 dotted quavers in 3 beats, so it sounds funky. The problem is that often this singer (and almost everyone else on Youtube) sings it in simple time.e.g. "never raised my hand" should have this effect.
I never comment but Oh My G. @ Insane Snowman: U ARE insanely Ignorant. Not in an offensive way, because I know u truly meant well, but Ignorant to the fact that this song is from a Musical, hence why he'd, Hmmmmm... would sound "...too musical theatre".
That's a vocal style within itself. This WhiteBoi could shock all ya'll in his next video Sangin Urban Gospel, or Death Metal!!
heh, the frowny lip through the whole song got on my nerves and overall it was a bit melodramatic if you ask me but since i wasn't asked... good effort and keep it up.
Great song- good voice. My only critique if you want it is that you sound so very musical theatre. It is very easy to fall into a "musical theatre" sound and then have nothing else to produce. Not that it sounds bad like this- but you loose a lot of the emotion and clarity because the vibrato is so stressed; it also has a tendency to sound as if your "trying" to sing. Let loose a little and sing it as if you were performing a monologue. You're acting says it all- bring it into your voice.
@stage4duncan ...nope.. trust me.. i have a pretty good idea. just personal opinion. Perfect example.. "these people try to scare you"... it would have worked out fine if his choice was to talk to 2=3 different people... but it makes no sense with the lyrics... and he whips his head in a couple different directions in a mater of secods
Ok people, This was a voice final, so enough with the acting notes. I know it makes people feel better when they critique others as much as possible, but the reality is he had certain criteria to fill and he did. He didn't even post this, someone else did.
very great connection to the piece, wonderful acting, and very good light tenor notes. But your vowels on your belt are a little bright and makes you tend to go sharp but very good work it was well done. its a hard piece.
i somewhat agree with "mmo1407" but you are like less than a quarter step flat on all of the really low notes, and when you float up to the high notes you just need to soar, the first one was really good, but the second seemed a little weak, and the third one as well. In the chorus the piano has its own part where it is really contrastive to the voice part and you MUST stand your ground at that part, but otherwise i think it sounds great!!
Very nice, really great expression, and good tone. Slight scoop into the word "why" at 1:50. I would also consider softening some of your vibrato at the high end of the song. Overall great performance!
wow...you all are little bitches. let me see your amazing broadway solo videos!!! haha i'll say he could have been more into it, but that's constructive criticism. Something to work on...not "your movements are awkward...your face looks weird." I like your bright high notes. :)
the emotion required to sing this song far surpasses any musical theatre. and to relay the emotion of nerves, passion, fear, and frustration, you almost cant hit every note perfectly.
excellent technique, outstanding emotion, brilliant character work, solid performance. dont listen to these middle school "defying gravity" belters who think a good performance is yelling as high as you can
A certain amount of vibrato does indeed come with good technique, but this vibrato is so wide that it is clearly a result of there not being enough diaphragmatic support in his voice.
It was all in all, pretty good. However, he didn't stick to the written rhythm AT ALL through the piece. He tried making each line "his own" by varying the rhythm that he says each word, but it just made it TOO conversational. The high Es with the words "said" and "hand" just sound terrible. Despite those things, it wasn't that bad of a performance.
wow, really sincere performance, totally drew me in and he has a gorgeous tone to his voice. I loved the vunderability and innocence of it, really powerful.
I actually thought it was quite good. Peoples opinion on acting will alwasy differ but what they must remember is it is relative! People on television do not overact as it is not neccessary and you do not need to over act in a small room for an exam. I didn't think it was bad at all.
Ironically, I don't agree with the overacting comments. In fact, I think there could have been more acting.
I thought the whole time that this was pleasant. He's fairly nice looking, good voice, overall good performance. But I didn't get the feeling that he was accused of raping and killing a little girl, you know? More like he hit her really hard instead. It's a little hard to explain. I think for video it fit nicely, but from 50 feet away I'd never see the desperation.
well i've added this video to my favorites, listened to it a million times and still think he's amazing. He has such a sweet yet powerful voice that charms you. His portrayal of Leo drew me in. I thought it was fabulous, not to mention he's absolutely gorgeous.
Vibrato is a result of good technique and of being relaxed. I completely disagree in saying that there is too much vibrato. He might be forcing it in some areas, but it's not because there is too much vibrato.
I agree with jerkypuck, and those who comment on overacting need to remember that acting for the theater is bigger and good theater acting always looks overacted when it is shown on video. Beautiful voice, by the way.
as a voice and acting coach, I thought you did a beautiful job. The character was internalized, it was very believable. This is a man who is fighting for his life. Of course it is going to be melodramatic. The piece is melodrama. Fantastic job.
I disargree with the people who though you were overacting. I think that you did a wonderful job! You have a lovely voice and good acting skills! I'm very impressed!
