I'm glad you mention Dream Theater, I'm a huge fan... been playing drums for about 6 years now, but I didn't have a good set till like 1 year ago.. so I'm pretty much getting used to it. A good drum solo should tell a story. Start off with the begining of the story something simple in the middle give a little more of the story and at the end give them all you got like killing the main good guy in the story.

Yes. Slipknot, Joey, uses mostly a "play and repeat" method where he'll throw something out there with his hands, then copy the rythm on the bass.

Mike, DIsturbed, does a lot more "hand heavy" fills. so he will use 4 on hands and 2 on bass instead of 4 and 4 or 2 and 2 or whatever.

thanks for this man. i started learning using the base pedals first (right left right left) and always found that my final left hit on the tom or snare was frequently out of time. hitting the snare/tom first makes it alot easier. other than that you got a good attitude pal i'l surely use alot of your videos im still pretty beginner.

I think it is because he is using aquarian performans II heads ( atleast they look like they are) They are for lower tunings and cameras suck at picking up sound. My drums have all Aquarian perf. II heads on my drums except for remo snare head, and i dont use resonant heads for the toms. sounds better....

Thanks for the technique and you're right... Waayy to many drummers, such as previously mentioned in video, do this technique. my personal favorite is John Bonham's drum solo from moby dick. very talented drummer, and he didn't have as much influences as we do today. anyway, just telling you that i love your videos, great style, and i can tell you're not being some show off like most the others on here, you actually enjoy it.
