When I did Goju the rule was that if you walk into another person's dojo you are always a white belt. No matter what belt you have now no matter what training you've had before you are always the junior, unless you are teaching the class. The other thing we learned was 'military virture' . This mean you must always treat all those with more experience with respect. And it mean that you always look out and nurture those with less experience than you.
Well, this question can open a lengthy discussion; but I believe the core of your question is regarding how discipline is achieved. Typically, discipline is achieved either through respect or through fear; one is genuine and the other is insincere. I would ask you to explain "how" you intend to be more 'casual'? Then I can advise you more accurately.
In my first Tai Chi Chuan Fa class, some guy bragged about knowing an exercise better than the rest of us, and the Instructor made him do the movement backwards. Which he failed to accomplish.
I only lasted one day in Tai Chi Chuan. The next day, muscles I never knew existed were in screaming pain. :O (Yow!).
SUPERB! Bieng a blk belt is more than knowing forms(katas),strikes and kicks but applied concepts and traits, certain charectoristics that bring out the best in you and others.
your pointer about not being offended, when I was a young student I approached a master and called him by his first name. He insulted me openly and told everyone about it. I'd visit another class and the students there would be talking about "Some stupid disrespectful student."
Shouldn't this doesn't carry over into the black belt's personal life.
I know one black belt who applies that advice to his outside-class life.
But I know another who treats his wife as if she's "less-than" him. I've heard him talk to her that way, and I've heard him talk to Master G. with the deepest respect.
His wife is NOT his inferior. If he has control in class, why doesn't he practice it with her?
Also would you please add me to youtube friends list please and thank you

Alex is my favorite example of black belt that I know in real life. Actually he's one of one 2 black belts I know, period.
Alex is a 4th degree black belt. I don't understand what the degrees mean, but that's what he is. He's also a gr8 example of a respectable black belt.
