Completely agreed with this. I'm also very proud of my country and the history of the country. I also like the fact that england and the netherlands were somehow always at war, but when they needed eachother it was possible to combine the powers like at the Spanish Succesion war.

One problem with putting modern warships with the germans, at the time of those photographs the royal navy was still the largest most powerful navy in existence, it had more ships and was more powerful than at any point before or after, and you put down the german navy which consisted of a couple of ports in the baltic, had one sortie at jutland before not venturing out again etc etc etc, should have had the royal navy.

Letters and reports from the german, british and french military. Belgian government investigation. It happened. It was used as propaganda of course, but it did actually occur. You said 'they did nothing different' in WW1. They did. There was nothing similar on the western front in WW1. The Prussian militaristic mindset was the primary cause.

@HDreamer And can I just point out that from 1870 to 1940 the prussians/germans were at war with France THREE times. To claim that Prussians acted no different to anyone else in europe is inaccurate. Their entire society was based on military duty, physical and mental superiority, and the 'right of might' (survival of the fittest, they loved Darwin more than anyone). Personally I class them as 'more evil' than the brits or the french, who at least had moderating influences on excesses.

Actually Karl der Grosse was the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, so created by the Latin pope who wanted a counter weight to the Roman empire in Constantinopolos. Jeanne d'Arc was a heroine if you believe Mark Twain's book. Less so if you think of her as a bastard child of nobility who lived in quite retirement after having someone else burned by the Burgundians (another german tribe) in her place.

No, no! Don't mix up the terms. German and GermanIC is NOT the same. Swedish people can be counted as a germanic tribe (their language is, no doubt) and Britons can be counted, too. But are Swedsish and Britons part of the German people? For sure: no.
In German language we use to make a distinction between "Germanisch" (germanic) and "deutsch" (German). The francs were a germanic tribe, sure, but count as ancestors of french as well as german nation (and somhow even Italian!)

Sweden is a modern nations (at least fairly) but has a large number of long ago tribes that mixed moved and matched.
