Depends on the requirements of the game. However, here is a good example of Torque's networking efficiency:
As many may or may not know, Torque is the original V12 engine that powered Tribes2, a first person strategic shooter. In its day, dialup was common, and it was possible to play online with 32 people on a 28.8k connection including vehicles with rigid body physics. Most games, even today, only support 4-6 maybe 8 and rarely 10, for a 28.8k dialup user.
It has been suggested by GarageGames that on an average DSL connection one should be able to host up to 64 players. For a good DSL connection, 128. And with lots of tweaking and some highly modified classes, Torque could support thousands.
Regardless, Torque has the #1 best net code in existence, compared to every engine that is commercially available. The only game I have yet seen that did a better job was World of Warcraft. Some tweaking and a few changes could make it as good, or better.
Planetside is also rumored to be powered by pieces of the V12 engine, and has excellent networking for an mmofps. The employees at GarageGames debunk this, however. So it probably doesn't.
Hope it helps! Apologies for the ramble. I do that. :P
Oh, and a little known fact: NCsoft's now defunct Auto Assault was created with the Torque game engine. It was a great game, but unfortunately the vehicular mmorpg genre never really took off.
With the torque engine how many users do you think can be supported simultaneously in an online gaming environment?
