I think it's a great interpretation, I learned this piece for a recent recital and it's a lovely composition by Debussy, not to mention easier and shorter than most of his work. Reverie is what I'm on now but I'll continue working on Girl with the flaxen hair.
Il prend des libertés avec le tempo pour en rajouter dans le lyrisme, le pathos ....C'est une pièce qui ne doit pas se faire trop remarquer, écoutez la version de Benedetti Michelangeli plutôt !
Lang Lang plays this signature piece of Debussy very idiomatically and with wonderful fluidity. Definitely among the best renditions I have heard. Disturbing mannerisms can be avoided simply by not looking -- it's all about listening!
He is listening to every note, the vibrations in the air that only he can feel, like Bethoven,i can still here the note of the last one played as he goes to the next,he is one with the instument~
@happyhappyhappyperso he's enjoying the stunning beauty of this wonderful piece. IMHO that is the way every1 should try to attempt performing this 1 :)
@happyhappyhappyperso in my opinion; if he practices this beautiful mesmerizing piece at home, in his living room, or wherever he's in private surroundings he may do as many gestures he wants; but in a live performance it's a bit over the top ;)
I love my mom's interpretation of this song, it's still the best yet. It was about this love from a distance and the melancholy when the girl slipped away. Maybe I'm so used to it I can't feel anything in any other version...
i actually think his interpretation of this piece was sublime. try for yourself, listen to it without looking at his exaggerated expressions, and i think you'll see the genius behind the showman.
I understand LangLang, when im practicing (playing the whole piece through) i get high on music. the harmonic progression, you can feel it through every pore of your body and every inch of your bones. and you just smile with pure joy. :) and your face distorts into beauty
All music is based on human emotions with the exception of the purists' music. Lang Lang isn't only playing the piano, is interpreting all of it, putting emphasis in the composer's emotions which I consider paramount. If you can imagine it, try to visualize an instant in which the composer, long dead in many cases, comes down to occupy the pianist's body to play the music again, maybe this will enable you to understand what he's doing; not because you can't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exists.
I love Lang Lang's presentation. As in so many, many of his performances he plays from his heart and from a point of love. He spiritually captures what I feel to be Debussy's intent. Bravo!
This is the best i've heard this piece played. Lang Lang is able to express such sublime beauty in it. Maybe he 'feels' that beauty when he plays, hence how he looks when he plays.
This is the best i've heard this piece played. Lang Lang is able to express such sublime beauty in it. Maybe he 'feels' that beauty when he plays, hence how he looks when he plays.
I prefer to listen to him than to look at him...too much show. Sometimes his interpretation becomes also trivial and cheap. Good , talented pianist, but not the kind of musicians I like.
I hate people who "hate" Lang Lang. What is the problem with him?? He is an awesome musician! There is so many others who play so bad and more demonstratively, but nobody says " I hate this musician"!
lang lang has never been my favorite interpreter, to say the least, but i think that he's suited to play pieces like this. i found it rather enjoyable.
and though i'm sometimes disturbed by the way he plays, very theatrical!, i don't think he's neither doing it on purpose nor exaggerating it. i mean, even when he talks in interviews his body seems to naturally move that way. and if you're willing to overcome your annoyance at his "theatrical" movements, you might see that he's really into it.
I really think it is incredible how he is into his music physically. I wish I could do this while I performed. Unfortunately i'm a trombone player and it doesn't work that way. :(
impresionism is not sinonim of darkness, if you know impresionism is the end of romanticism; its another lenguage, please try to understand it, because is more that what you know ;)
It's meant to be a very lyrical piece, and I think he pulls that off wonderfully. I'm not sure why people think he doesn't. I hate Lang Lang, to be honest, but recently I've heard some things by him that I think sound very nice, like this one. Debussy isn't all "dark" or "impressionist". If I recall, he did not like that label being put on his music. This is a sweet piece, and is meant to be tender, in my mind, which is what it sounds like :P So what's the problem, exactly?
sorry, just listening to this sounds like the awesomest piano sound I have ever heard. If only I could extract that kind of sound when playing debussy. BRAVO!
@LetTheMusicFlow1 i am not sure you are right that Lang plays Chopin better. He plays Chopin too much pompously and this isn't the right way how Chopin wanted .
I think that the best composer for Lang Lang is Liszt or some another technical one.
Lang Lang is my absolute favorite pianist, but I will not shy away from the fact that he plays Chopin better than he does impressionism. There isn't that glittery, dark sound that is required. I still love him more than is plausible, though, don't get me wrong.
He is getting better and better! In both piano playing and weird face making.

i dont know.. its such a wondeful song, but lang lang isnt as great as everybody thinks.
MsMadameMadmoiselle 14 hours ago
He does look a bit weird.. BUT..
He's feeling the beauty of it. You can tell he's in AWE of what Debussy has done. And he can't quite believe how the harmonies come together.
Even though I don't like his face, I still have to admit he has a great feel and appreciation for the subtle art of it

I cannot stand his method of playing; the obvious showmanship and playing up of emotions.
However, this is the best interpretation of this prelude I've ever heard.
