Callas simply owns the role. Can any soprano these days sustain and float entire passages the way she does and then come out with a frightening intensity? If not, they can only rent it.
Callas's 1957 live version is sometimes more immediate than this studio version, but one part that was very good there but is amazing here is the 'home sweet home' melody. It was marvelously introspective in 1957, but here, it's otherworldly. I also like the changes in phrasing in the cabaletta at the end, but the tone is thinner here, sadly, than a year (or two?) ago.

Callas is fantastic, though I prefer in Bolena, Gruberova.

Incomparable vocal weight-no other defines this role-she does it-Callas is and by far THE singer of the past and so far the present to date

I am surprised there's no response yet to Maria's fine
rendition of Anna, she's superb!
Also in Puritani, Lucia and Tosca....thank god for those
wonderful italian composers.....oh Norma!
