The story was made up in the UK, among those who was said to have converted him was Yusuf Isalm, according to the story. Yusuf Islam + others said in the story have put out statements saying this never happen, then never even met MJ.

He wanted to leave Sony which meant he would have taken half of Sony publishing with him. It was something Sony was very angry about. First they tried to sabotage his album Invincible and when that didn't work, they got more desperate IMO, and the result was his death. He says so himself on youtube.
