you and your damn delicious looking egg sandwich... why did I have to watch this in the middle of the night? Peanut butter is amazing, you can put it on anything... try it with ham and cheese... really.
@BornInTzyon How do you sprout *canned* chick peas? I think *everything* that is ever canned gets cooked first! And you can't sprout something once it's been cooked.
Thanks for this, I will be trying some sprouts soon. And I don't know if i'm just hungry or what but that onion, pb, and sprouts sandwich looks really good. Good thing vidalias are showing up at the markets.

Hey yankeeprepper, how do you make the egg salad? I've been experimenting with your recipes and i'm really digging the sprouts on bread with just about anything but I have no idea what do with eggs other than sunny side up. Love your food!
So let me me this straight. You rinsed the seed mix in the tray twice a day, for four days and just left them stacked on top of each other in a dark place when not rinsing them? If so then I really am impressed that you got so much food in such a short space of time. Would you do the same method with the other two in your video? Oh yes and subscribed.
The Family Circle website has an incredible wheat-berry salad recipe that uses things most will have in their LTFS pantry. The only thing that you may not have is the feta cheese but for those who will be making cheese it's a great meal, otherwise it could be left out and still be a great meal
you bring alot to the learning table on here at you tube. i just started to see the prepper thing on here and im taking it serious, i wished i knew alot sooner, but i'm working double time to catch up. your videos are really helping me alot so thanks buddy and god bless.
Thanks for your entertainment lol and wonderful info. A good try for those sprouts are to drizzle olive oil and garlic powder on them with toasted wheat or any bread.
What I like most about sprouts as a preparedness/survival food is the cost of seeds vs the huge amount of food you get and the minimal storage space required for a year's worth of food. Cheap, tasty, highly nutritious, easy to store, easy to prepare, sustainable from gardening, and requiring minimal storage space; what's not to love about sprouts?
@Yankeeprepper Lol...just found the answer I was looking for...red wheat berries it is. However...I do have another question. What should I be paying for wheat, rice, beans, and various "sproutable" seeds and which kinds should I buy? I have enough MRE's for 3 months if I have 1 a day but its the least cost effective way to eat. I can do better for less. Do you think $33 for 6 #10 cans of white, including shipping, is a good price? BTW...thank you for all the great videos & info.
What a great video! I am sitting here on night shift at work, VERY HUNGRY already, and I was hanging on your every word! I could practically smell the sandwiches there! Well I am in FL and I don't know of any Indian reservations to go buy from, and for something like this I would love to get a recommendation for a specific product. Trying to narrow down the SHTF items and this is hands down one of the most useful vids I have seen so far! Readymaderesources here I come.
I'm a big sprouter, do about three jars a week. They are low maintenance, but truthfully there is more than just rinsing: you need to dehull the alfalfa sprouts. It's not a huge job, but it is something that needs to be done, otherwise the hulls that accumulate are unsightly and detract from the delicate taste of the sprouts.
@TempeB Dehulling alfalfa? why?? That's like taking the crust off your bread. Why lose that fiber? eat it!
But if you must dehull it, it's really easy. Put your sprouts in a bowl of water, and the shake it around a little.. the hulls float to the surface. Sprouts are AWESOME nutrition. Get organic, non-GMO sprout though! And be careful because the feds just approved GM Alfalfa.. :(
onions, peanut butter, and sprouts oh my! I'll have to give it a try. I am vegetarian so I'm always looking for great BOB and/or SHTF ideas for the food I like. Thanks!
You said you'd post "something on wild rice" and don't see anything. I'd really love to know where you get the lower cost wild rice? You went directly to the reservation? Did you call first? LOL my searching has come up with nothing for this. Thanks for the great videos.
Hey Yankeeprepper, in the third bowl with the assorted seeds and beans, I think you mentioned mung, and I thought I saw lentil. What were the other beans and seeds in that combination? Good info, btw.
SHTF stands for: Shit Hits The Fan. It's an English expression. This expression alludes to the effects of shit being thrown into an electric fan. It's about the messy consequences brought about by a previously secret situation becoming public. Could be anything from an earthquake, a virus, war, a tsunami, a comet that falls to earth etc. When shit hits the fan, you better be prepared.
Egg salad w/ALFALFA Sprouts .... YUM!!! Great video Yankee! Lots of folks are clueless about sprouting... and it's so Easy! This vid is a "keeper" for my SHTF library...good work!
Here's another classic "sammy"... Peanut Butter w/apple slices and a drizzle of honey!
Folks - Keep your long term "keeper" fruits & veggies stocked at all times these days...Winter squash, carrots, cabbage, potatoes, onions, apples & oranges or other citrus. You could be right glad you did! Thanks, Yankee!
Do you have to buy "special" sprouting seeds and beans or are they just seeds and beans? This is the first of your videos I've watched but I see a Yankeeprepper marathon in my near future! Thanks!
Awesome vids. And nice sprouting toys too. I've been using mason jars. Yep, it is more work than the green sprouters.
Good emphasis on the multiple rinsing of the sprouts. 3 times a day for me works best. If you ever forget to rinse after the first day, like if you skip a day. . . YUCK! It will smell rotten. Rinse rinse rinse.
I've grown sprouts for years, even in the field when I was on active duty, but I haven't a clue how long the seeds will be viable in storage. Do you have any info on how long the different varities will store?
hey , I am from Europe so a bit confused by English , so a quick question . I get the rice and I get wheat , but what kind of seeds do You use for sprouting that you showed in this video ?
Hey Yankee. I'm in the process of purchasing some grains and wheat berries. Just curious if you know of any suppliers that offer grains and berries that are already packaged inside 5 gal buckets inside mylar (or just mylar bags). I don't mind doing all the prepping, but seems to me a great opportunity for some supplier to provide such a product to save people like me some time.
@Yankeeprepper You made my Christmas, Yankee. I appreciate how much you share with us (stuff you could easily charge as a SHTF consultant). Thank you kindly.
This is great info to be putting out there Yankee......I love sprouts and this method makes it so much easier to grow them........Good info to use not only in a SHTF scenario....but in the now.....Most people just don't realize the nutritional value of these sprouts.....But they do now...... Thanks!!.....Keep'em coming!!
One more question, Yankee. Went to Waltons online. Saw 50lb hard red wheat. Noticed huge price differnece in organic vs. regular. Which do you get? And should it really matter in a SHTF situation? Any preference on plastic bags vs. paper as far as storage and moisture protection goes? Thanks for your time, man.
@shanearthurSA I have bought both. For a SHTF situation it's not going to matter to me. Food will be the priority. I pack mine in big 5 gallon bucket size mylar bags that I got off of an EBAY auction and then I pack that inside a 5 gallon bucket with a rubber sealed ring top. 5 gallon buckets are nice, they stack well and can be carried out quickly if there is an "emergency"
@Yankeeprepper Thank you kindly. It's the small details that always hampered my prepping. Your method will work better for me, too, since my basement seems to get damp and moldy after some time without my dehumidifier. Now off to find mylar and rubber sealed 5 gallon buckets (food grade white I'm assuming).
ps. Two days of Yankee advice and I've learned more about preparedness than 5 years of homeland security duct-taping-door public services announcements. :)
Yankee, thank you for your time and energy explaining all this to us. As a former computer instructor, I appreciate clear, actionable instruction. Some people have the skill, some don't. You do, and after a year of viewing various a##hats, getting discouraged, trying more videos, getting discourage some more, I'm super happy I found your stuff. Now for my student question: Do you buy your red wheat berries for a particular source or box store? How long would a 35lb bucket last? Again, thanks.
@shanearthurSA I buy my wheat from a local farmer. But there are bulk sellers on line as well. It's always nice to be able to buy locally fresh. I would look around your area first. Walton Feed d0t c0m is about the best i have found online for bulk fresh/dry food. As for the 35 # bucket question, well that all depends on how you use it. 1 # of wheat makes a pound of flour, but a # of wheat makes a heck of alot of sprouts. 1 cup of wheat makes a cup and 1/2 of flour for cooking and baking.
@Yankeeprepper Thank you kindly. I'll check out Waltons. I'd use the wheat for making bread—it's a new addiction of mine. In a SHTF situation, I'd probably do 50/50 bread, sprouts. (still need to get the sprouting kit and watch all your videos as I know nothing about storage and moisture barriers for barrels.).
I'm a bit confused. I just bought 25 lbs of "hard white wheat" for long-term storage. You mention in your video that you eat your wheat "as is" without cooking. You call your "wheat berries." My wheat is really hard and I can't imagine just eating it raw--it is as hard as uncooked rice. Are we talking about two different products? I tried to grind it in the blender for 2 minutes and in my food processor this morning and was unsuccessful--end result was about 3 times the size of grits.
@prepperfrau hard wheat is usually referring to winter wheat and soft wheat is spring wheat. Both have different cooking qualities. You can easily eat hard wheat, try it. It's very good. The Romans marched for days eating the same kind of wheat. It will fill you up, and clean your teeth.
HEy Yankee, I'm a recent subscriber, I couldn't post on your taco video for some reason, I wanted to see you make SHTF Fish Tacos, the fried fish is the easy part, but you can make corn tortillas by grinding cracked corn and binding it together with Lard, then rolling them out and cutting them to shape. You should Try it, and stock up on cracked corn and lard for corn tortillas daily!
Maybe that is a difference between wild rice and white rice. I used the white rice flour and the results were "elastic" I can't say the taste was bad, only the texture. If you do anything different to the wild rice flour biscuts than wheat flour biscuts, I would love to hear it. Otherwise we will have to assume you are the better cook.
Nice. That was cool as freak'n hell! They do that with soy beans too. I hear the enzymes break down the starch and make it more digestible and nutritious. Also, the green color of the sprouter makes the beans think its dark inside.
I actually pulled the trigger and bought my reverse osmosis desalinator pump for only 2 bills it came with biocide so I could test it out and treat it and store it in my BOB. Figured it was a good investment for shtf.
Alfalfa sprouts have more chlorophyll than spinach, kale, cabbage or parsley. Alfalfa, sunflower, clover & radish sprouts are all 4% Protein. Compare that to spinach - 3%, Romaine lettuce -1.5% & Iceberg lettuce- 0.8%, & milk -3.3%.
Soybean sprouts have 28% protein (more than 2x the protein of eggs & only 1/10 the fat), & lentil & pea sprouts are 26%. In contrast - Meat is 19% protein & eggs are 13% (& 11% fat).
Sprouts are just amazing! Preppers should all use sprouts to survive!
Great video! You made me hungry until you made the peanut butter and onion sandwich! haha! Thanks for the info! My mom just bought one of these sprouters! Can't wait to see how they do!
I'll have to pass the "Peanut butter, onion, sprout" defense system on to my former hand to hand military instructors. LMAO, You could be looking at a contract deal with the DOD buddy. Great stuff!
Yankeeprepper where do you get most of your seeds? have you had the lentils, Alfalfa, and broccoli seeds for for long? what is the one that starts with a M, mounges? where would you suggest I go to start stocking up on these some place like farm and fleet or somewhere like costco. I know my questions may sound dumb but I am entirely new to this but want to learn fast.
wheat barres can last 2000 or more years, in Egypt archeologist found a sealed container full of wheat seeds and they grew!
Myself have always ground my own wheat because i do not like the idea of eating GMO stuff from the store. guys do not eat GMO it's not good, if you plan to live to see your grandchildren.
Keep them cool and dry and they will store for year. I read a recent article on how wheat was grown that was found in a tomb that was over 3000 years old! I have alot of seeds that are over 3 years old and I still get plants from them. And plan to this year.
thanks for the speedy reply...good news to hear that I haven't wasted my money since I can't plant this year..at least not on a large scale....I've heard that you can keep them in the freezer. is this true?
I thought I was the only one that ate peanutbutter and onion sandwiches! My family is fine with the survivalist stuff, but they think I'm crazy for the peanutbutter and onion.
Yummmm! Can't wait till the Morale's come up in spring. The best places I found were in aspen (Poplar) forests that are low lying. It's more expensive than gold!
Yankee, God Bless You! You are so awesome. I started sprouting last year. I put it up when I got busy. You've inspired me to do it again. I forget how easy it is and how nutritious it is for your body. Thanks for the video
Wild rice can even be soaked for two days and eaten raw.
You can also sprout seeds in mason jars with screened lids. You must rinse 3X in jars and turn them upside down to drain between rinsing. You can buy plastic sprouting lids for around $4 to fit on wide mouth mason jars.
Wow Yankee, you've always got great ideas. And here I thought I was MISTER Frugal. All of your stuff is practicable/practical.Even as poor as I am, a number of your ideas have helped my prep-game tremendously.Thank you dear Sir. One Q,Will grocery store bought wild rice sprout?Oh, and I have found that my used milk jugs cut in half work GREAT, as rinsing is made easier and theirs lots of room in them. They would otherwise be thrown away,so, cheap. Now, if I can just keep my cat out of the sprouts.
Thanks man, it is a labor of love. I have never sprouted the wild rice. I cook the rice and grind for flour. Wild rice is actually an oat and not a rice and it is highly nutritional, it even has a decent amount of protein in it. The real satisfaction of living frugal or smart is that you live a richer life!!!
Dude this is pretty damn cool, I honestly have to say I never considered Alfalfa, oh btw..judging by the fps and the AK mag on the ground, AND the familiar muzzle blast, I am going to go out on a limb and say that was a draco or mini draco?

I pack mine in big 5 gallon bucket size mylar bags that I got off of an EBAY auction and then I pack that inside a 5 gallon bucket with a rubber sealed ring top. 5 gallon buckets are nice, they stack well and can be carried out quickly if there is an "emergency"
Yankeeprepper 1 year ago

Again, thanks.
shanearthurSA 1 year ago
@shanearthurSA I buy my wheat from a local farmer. But there are bulk sellers on line as well. It's always nice to be able to buy locally fresh. I would look around your area first. Walton Feed d0t c0m is about the best i have found online for bulk fresh/dry food. As for the 35 # bucket question, well that all depends on how you use it. 1 # of wheat makes a pound of flour, but a # of wheat makes a heck of alot of sprouts. 1 cup of wheat makes a cup and 1/2 of flour for cooking and baking.
Yankeeprepper 1 year ago

I tried to grind it in the blender for 2 minutes and in my food processor this morning and was unsuccessful--end result was about 3 times the size of grits.
prepperfrau 1 year ago

Ahhh....yes there is a difference between the two.

Try peanutbutter on toast with raw garlic. Awesome. Helps to feed it to your partner too so they don't complain about the breath.

How can I save/store my seeds if I am not going to use them this year? where they will still be viable....thanks!!!
twomiracles 2 years ago
Keep them cool and dry and they will store for year. I read a recent article on how wheat was grown that was found in a tomb that was over 3000 years old! I have alot of seeds that are over 3 years old and I still get plants from them. And plan to this year.
Yankeeprepper 2 years ago
thanks for the speedy reply...good news to hear that I haven't wasted my money since I can't plant this year..at least not on a large scale....I've heard that you can keep them in the freezer. is this true?

Yankee, God Bless You! You are so awesome. I started sprouting last year. I put it up when I got busy. You've inspired me to do it again. I forget how easy it is and how nutritious it is for your body. Thanks for the video
Shellimama1 2 years ago
Wild rice can even be soaked for two days and eaten raw.
You can also sprout seeds in mason jars with screened lids. You must rinse 3X in jars and turn them upside down to drain between rinsing. You can buy plastic sprouting lids for around $4 to fit on wide mouth mason jars.
Very good information.

Now, if I can just keep my cat out of the sprouts.
rvlqcitizen 2 years ago
Thanks man, it is a labor of love. I have never sprouted the wild rice. I cook the rice and grind for flour. Wild rice is actually an oat and not a rice and it is highly nutritional, it even has a decent amount of protein in it. The real satisfaction of living frugal or smart is that you live a richer life!!!
