Yes, I've heard of Callas, Berganza and Cernei, etc. I like them too. Appreciating one performance doesn't mean all other performances are somehow less meaningful to an individual. Personal preferences kick in here. Hell! There are people who think that Katherine Jenkins can sing this role!
"...boring and cold." Hmmm. I disagree with that assessment. I think she's sexy and has the right attitude for a Carmen.
@Zackypups I prefer Elina Garanca, because the role of Carmen was composed for a Mezzo-Soprano, not for a Soprano, besides, Carmen was a gypsy, her voice must be dark and smooth, not squeaky (in the good way of the word) and light. sorry but, sopranos singing Carmen it's not OK.
Why do people mention Callas? you can't compare, Elina is a Mezzo-soprano, Callas was a Coloratura-Spinto Soprano; and Bizet composed this aria for a mezzo-soprano, I still don't know why sopranos sing Carmen arias, they shouldn't, they have a lot of Soprano roles, they don't need to sing Mezzo's arias. MY opinion is, I prefer a Mezzo singing the role that was written for her type of voice, rather than a soprano practically stealing arias from the Mezzo-Sopranos. have a good day.
@carito3093 So? And Callas is not Ponselle and Ponselle is not Malibran or since we talk Carmen, Emma Calve. Every great singer is unique, every great singer has elements of greatness and flaws, every great singer is different and everyone brings something new to the role. Nobody is Callas, but Callas is dead. Elina is alive, and we can go to opera and listen to her live unamplified voice. Opera is meant to be enjoyed live in theaters.

She is definetly telling a story- - the fire in her eyes compels me to understand her emotions if not the words. A beautiful performance, probably my favorite version.
@MajorCrazy1 My favorite is Rinat Shaham, but Elina Garanca is very very close to be my favorite too. I do think Elina Garanca is the best mezzo soprano overall today. To really appreciate her acting, watch her singing this role at the Met - several videos here from last season.
Carmen was premiered in 1875. In 1877, a full score was published with an "alternative" soprano version of the role of Carmen. This was an alternative, not what was originally written.
She looks kinda scary with some of those face expressions. When she hits those big notes it looks like she's yawning. That has to be poor technique. Also; Dictionaries definition of Opera is, '' A Drama set to music ''...So here we see Elina being a classical singer NOT an opera singer as there is no drama taking place. But the yawning really is bad!!!
@VinnyLog Showing your ignorance again, I see. Also, there are zillion videos here of Elina Garanca singing and acting this role in a Carmen production and doing it brilliantly, but you clearly are too lazy to watch those.
@jewelmarkess Opera in italian means, ''work''. And the definition of opera means, a drama set to music. You should listen to those who know better!!! So there is NO work being demonstrated in Elina's performance as she seems to be singing it fairly effortlessly. If you wanna see a classical vocalist working at her craft and displaying some drama in her face then you need to watch Kath Jenkins, NOT the laid back perfectionism of your opera women lacking humanity...
@VinnyLog Yes, I speak Italian fluently and I know what the word "opera" is. However, what you don't know is that what we in all other countries call "opera" is called "opera lirica" in Italy. As we speak in English, I suggest you look up what the word "opera" means is used for in the English language by checking Webster or Heritage or Oxford or any other online English dictionary. I suggest you stop parading your ignorance and learn something. Wiki has a nice article on opera and its history.
@VinnyLog Once again you prove your ignorance of opera. This is a concert version of an aria from Carmen. Yes, do go back to your Beyonce CDs...and your Britney Spears CDs.
@forknskewer I am sorry, but your comment doesn't make any sense. It's French, so if you can't say what language the aria is sung in that you can't say if the language is good or not. The character is that of a Spanish gypsy. Yes, a British woman can sing the part of a Spanish Gypsy, but she has to act like one. Do you understand the difference between "being" and "acting"? Do you know the words of this aria? The story of Carmen? Elina Garanca is from Latvia by the way, and she can act well.
So who said opera women wouldnt need a microphone in the 1800's [there wasnt any I know] due to their ability to sing with power? They mustve been better opera singers than the ones today then. A microphone or two is visible at Elina Garanca's concert. And don't tell me its for recording purposes like CD's because not every concert gets put onto a CD or DVD.
@VinnyLog Yes, the microphone is for recording purposes. Look where it's placed, some feet away from both Garanca and the orchestra so that it can record both. if she couldn't be heard above the orchestra live, she wouldn't be heard over the orchestra in the recording. You need to actually learn something about opera before you make your pronouncements.
I refer this song to be sung by a singer wih a higher voice register. Only Maria Callas could sing from very low to very high notes, making her the leading artist in songs and arias like this.
@forknskewer Did you notice the distance between her and the mic? It's there for recoding purposes obviously and it records not just her voice but a "wall of sound" coming both from her and the orchestra. If she hadn't been able to project over the orchestra, the orchestra would've overpowered her in the recording, but it doesn't happen.
@jewelmarkess ''The orchestra wouldve overpowered her...'' ? And elsewhere you were praising how powerfully these opera women could sing. If you want power, light n shade, nice texture of the voice, try listening to Katherine Jenkins doin' Canto Del Terra on one of her early CD's. For me, her best performance to date. Well I checked out Elina as suggested but I wouldnt start buying her stuff cos its personal taste. For the complete package I'll stick with KJ if thats ok with you!!!
@VinnyLog Can you read? I said "if she HADN'T BEEN ABLE TO PROJECT, the orchestra would've overpowered her", but she is able to project given as we hear her voice clearly even though the RECORDING (!) mic is 5 feet away and is recording both her voice and the orchestra at once. If this had been KJ, you'd not heard her here. As to KJ's power - it all comes from the mic which is right next to her mouth. You can prefer KJ's POP voice, it's taste, but she is still not an opera singer. Elina is.
@jewelmarkess You said, ''if this had been KJ you'd not hear her here[regard mike distance]...Unless KJ tries it out we'll never know for sure will we? I don't like assumptions...
@VinnyLog 1. The mike here is for RECORDING purposes only, the audience hears unamplified sound. 2.The reason Elina Garanca stands that far from the mic is because if she'd been closer, she'd blow it; in general, if the circumstances (recording, bad acoustics) requires an opera singer to use a mic, they are usually at 3-5 feet away;otherwise they blow it. 3. KJ is ALWAYS close to the mic, very close, closer than even many Broadway singers 4. KJ doesn't have this ring that would enable projection
@VinnyLog Jenkins has never tried to sing without a mic, because she has no power. Her excuse that her voice isn't mature enough yet to sing without one is rubbish. There are 18 year old opera singers in training who can sing without a mic and be heard in the topmost balcony in a theater.
@jewelmarkess To quote you...'' As to KJ's power,it comes from the mic which is next to her mouth. You may not have seen her in concert[as a fan anyway] but the mouth mike[if I can call it that] is used for when she's acting out a part which involves some energetic moves. That sort of mike then comes in handy so she can sing on the move. Just one of her talents which puts your opera women in the shadows!!! Hence her occasional breathy sound which some morons criticise. She stays in tune too...
@VinnyLog Opera singers can act a whole lot better than KJ - look at. scenes from operas, Most "opera women" are required to act and they act with both their voices and bodies a whole lot better than KJ. Look - you are arguing about something you don't know anything about. Here is some acting for you: /watch?v=UlGMlxElB3A or another singer: /watch?v=NYm7oJXVeks As to KJ, seriously, do you really think she portrays Carmen? Hint: Carmen isn't a proper English lady.
@VinnyLog Sorry, but real opera singers act out roles and move about the stage WITHOUT A MIC. Jenkins's breathy sound comes from not breathing properly for singing. Listen to real opera singers moving about the stage, acting out the role they're singing, and not audibly gulping for air the way KJ does.
@VinnyLog BTW - "Canto Del Terra" is a popular song, it has nothing to do with opera, so it's the type of stuff KJ should sing. Also, in this other video I gave you a link to, it's Elina Garanca's live performance at the Met which is a 3800-feet theater and which as all opera theaters uses no amplification. This is another performance at the Met in a different opera: /watch?v=ST1foXaRr_E - a whole lot more difficult aria than anything you've heard.
@VinnyLog I feel sorry fo you because you can't get past looks. KJ is such an inferior singer. She's a pretty face with limited talent. Obviously you can't enjoy a singer unless there's a pretty face and body to look at on the CD cover or in the video. Sad.
@arpeggio1358 Agreed. If one wasn't looking at the pretty blonde barbie piping the aria, he would click away as soon as the fat lady opens her mouth. Then again, maybe prettier singers will save the dying art form? Would be nice if there were more pretty AND talented opera singers!
@asifthroughsleep I hope this isn't true. Opera has always been about the voices. Unfortunately, there is a tendency these days to hire pretty faces with less than stellar voices in some opera houses. It's deplorable.I'd hate to think that Sills or Caballe couldn't get hired if they appeared on the scene today Then, there HAVE been some pretty faces who have great voices: Anna Moffo, Garanca, Sam Ramey, Franco Corelli among others.
@forknskewer The mic is probably for recording purposes. Notice that it's not right up in her face. Your house decoration analogy is not valid. The voice is what matters in opera. Some opera directors have stooped to hiring pretty faces with less that exceptional voices, and the opera fans don't like it. Garanca may look pretty, but what matters is her exceptional voice.
Simply stunning! Not only a great voice but a brain that understands the music and how to perform it! We need more singers like this today...and she is physically beautiful. Nothing wrong with that!
I love this song -- it sounds like two people hiding from one another and with a waterfall in the middle. I dont know why, but i recall that image in my mind.
ACIDICTHOUGHTS.......whilst i agree with you about unknown opera singers, i do not agree with your description of this fine looking woman, i think that you would be in the minority if people had a vote on it, .....tastes vary, and rightly so, but to compare her with a horses ..anything.........c'mon.
@TheGreatVarholy It's fine that you prefer Callas - who by the way was a soprano while Elina is a mezzo soprano, we all have our favorites. But why do you call Callas "the original"? Carmen was written long before Callas was born. Actually, I don't believe Callas even sang the role, only the aria. BTW, Elina is probably the best mezzo today (among alive singers), but check out also Rinat Shaham in this, I think you'll like her.
@lynird This is a studio recording. Scroll the same page down to the editorial review. It says "This recording was made near the end of Maria Callas's career. It is a role she never sang onstage, but it suited her almost perfectly, and she gives a deep, compelling performance on this recording."
@jewelmarkess I use "original" because Maria Callas' performance is the one I first remember hearing. I like her voice and expressiveness in the old video clips.
I don't even know what the blue hell the plot is about on any of 'em, let alone what the hell they are singing about.
Opera is for lack of any polite refined and respectful phrases--Melodramatic, trite, loud and plain damn boring. Like some damn soap opera but with folks singing in some other undecipherable language.
@TheGreatVarholy I see your point. I don't know which operas you've heard, but the stories do differ, some silly, but some realistic and good - many are based on famous works of literature. In terms of words - there are subtitles in all opera theaters these days. There is also much beautiful music in opera outside of a couple of famous arias. Carmen has many beautiful, easily recognizable melodies. BTW - there are some subtitled performances of habanera here, Antonacci's comes to mind.
@jewelmarkess NO THANK YOU I DON'T WANT TO CHECK THIS UNKNOWN OUT. Stop telling people to check things out!!! People have different taste. None of your opera singers would be brave enough to perform acrobatic moves in the air without safety net or wire while AT THE SAME TIME sing a song in tune. You should bow down to the feet of Kath Jenkins and kiss them!!!
@VinnyLog Yes, people have different tastes. So why don't you just admit that you like pop and aren't interested in opera and don't know anything about opera and aren't qualified to say who is or isn't an opera singer? You like pop and you prefer KJ's POPish sound, this is fine. You can't have it both ways. If you aren't interested in opera, admit your ignorance. If you want to argue about it, learn about it. And grow up.
@jewelmarkess You and your alter ego arpeggio go on about the power of a true opera singer not needing a mic' in the venue due to their prowess. Singing a song is about conveying a story to the listener. NOT belting top notes all the time. You don't know how to enjoy/listen to a song. The singer tells the story in melody and makes it interesting using their skills and when it ends the listener says '' Aaw NICE ''. You shouldnt analyse or compare the singer to others. Its NOT competition.
BournemouthVEVO: unfortunately, some singers in our days become famous because they are beautiful, not necessarily because they sing best. And I have little doubt that some greatly talented singers who don't have a major career because they look unremarkable.
That said, I am completely blown away by Elina Garanca's voice and artistry (and certainly enjoy looking at her). I think of her as the real deal.
I don't know...she's good but out of role, totally inespressive and very average in the end. But...Is it the power of marketing...or I ask to myself: have the people who go crazy for Garanca ever heard Callas, Berganza, Cernei...

You're talking out of your hat Vinnie! This is a very classical opera singer singing brilliantly. Now go away and listen to your Beyonce cds.
lostinfens 6 months ago
She looks kinda scary with some of those face expressions. When she hits those big notes it looks like she's yawning. That has to be poor technique. Also; Dictionaries definition of Opera is, '' A Drama set to music ''...So here we see Elina being a classical singer NOT an opera singer as there is no drama taking place. But the yawning really is bad!!!
VinnyLog 6 months ago
@VinnyLog Showing your ignorance again, I see. Also, there are zillion videos here of Elina Garanca singing and acting this role in a Carmen production and doing it brilliantly, but you clearly are too lazy to watch those.
jewelmarkess 6 months ago
@jewelmarkess Opera in italian means, ''work''. And the definition of opera means, a drama set to music. You should listen to those who know better!!! So there is NO work being demonstrated in Elina's performance as she seems to be singing it fairly effortlessly. If you wanna see a classical vocalist working at her craft and displaying some drama in her face then you need to watch Kath Jenkins, NOT the laid back perfectionism of your opera women lacking humanity...
VinnyLog 6 months ago
@VinnyLog Yes, I speak Italian fluently and I know what the word "opera" is. However, what you don't know is that what we in all other countries call "opera" is called "opera lirica" in Italy. As we speak in English, I suggest you look up what the word "opera" means is used for in the English language by checking Webster or Heritage or Oxford or any other online English dictionary. I suggest you stop parading your ignorance and learn something. Wiki has a nice article on opera and its history.
jewelmarkess 6 months ago

Elina Garanca is from Latvia by the way, and she can act well.
jewelmarkess 6 months ago
@forknskewer You obviously know nothing about opera. This discussion is over. i'm not going to converse with someone who spews out such nastiness.
arpeggio1358 6 months ago
So who said opera women wouldnt need a microphone in the 1800's [there wasnt any I know] due to their ability to sing with power? They mustve been better opera singers than the ones today then. A microphone or two is visible at Elina Garanca's concert. And don't tell me its for recording purposes like CD's because not every concert gets put onto a CD or DVD.
VinnyLog 6 months ago
@VinnyLog Yes, the microphone is for recording purposes. Look where it's placed, some feet away from both Garanca and the orchestra so that it can record both. if she couldn't be heard above the orchestra live, she wouldn't be heard over the orchestra in the recording. You need to actually learn something about opera before you make your pronouncements.
arpeggio1358 6 months ago
I refer this song to be sung by a singer wih a higher voice register. Only Maria Callas could sing from very low to very high notes, making her the leading artist in songs and arias like this.

Elīna Garanča, qu'elle étonne cette lettone !
YvesGingras 6 months ago
@forknskewer This is without a mic: /watch?v=dr_tOxi16Ag It's subtitled, so you can even learn the words and judge the expressiveness.
jewelmarkess 6 months ago
@forknskewer Did you notice the distance between her and the mic? It's there for recoding purposes obviously and it records not just her voice but a "wall of sound" coming both from her and the orchestra. If she hadn't been able to project over the orchestra, the orchestra would've overpowered her in the recording, but it doesn't happen.
jewelmarkess 6 months ago
@jewelmarkess ''The orchestra wouldve overpowered her...'' ? And elsewhere you were praising how powerfully these opera women could sing. If you want power, light n shade, nice texture of the voice, try listening to Katherine Jenkins doin' Canto Del Terra on one of her early CD's. For me, her best performance to date. Well I checked out Elina as suggested but I wouldnt start buying her stuff cos its personal taste. For the complete package I'll stick with KJ if thats ok with you!!!
VinnyLog 6 months ago
@VinnyLog Can you read? I said "if she HADN'T BEEN ABLE TO PROJECT, the orchestra would've overpowered her", but she is able to project given as we hear her voice clearly even though the RECORDING (!) mic is 5 feet away and is recording both her voice and the orchestra at once. If this had been KJ, you'd not heard her here. As to KJ's power - it all comes from the mic which is right next to her mouth. You can prefer KJ's POP voice, it's taste, but she is still not an opera singer. Elina is.
jewelmarkess 6 months ago
@jewelmarkess You said, ''if this had been KJ you'd not hear her here[regard mike distance]...Unless KJ tries it out we'll never know for sure will we? I don't like assumptions...
VinnyLog 6 months ago
@VinnyLog 1. The mike here is for RECORDING purposes only, the audience hears unamplified sound. 2.The reason Elina Garanca stands that far from the mic is because if she'd been closer, she'd blow it; in general, if the circumstances (recording, bad acoustics) requires an opera singer to use a mic, they are usually at 3-5 feet away;otherwise they blow it. 3. KJ is ALWAYS close to the mic, very close, closer than even many Broadway singers 4. KJ doesn't have this ring that would enable projection
jewelmarkess 6 months ago
@VinnyLog Jenkins has never tried to sing without a mic, because she has no power. Her excuse that her voice isn't mature enough yet to sing without one is rubbish. There are 18 year old opera singers in training who can sing without a mic and be heard in the topmost balcony in a theater.
arpeggio1358 6 months ago
@jewelmarkess To quote you...'' As to KJ's power,it comes from the mic which is next to her mouth. You may not have seen her in concert[as a fan anyway] but the mouth mike[if I can call it that] is used for when she's acting out a part which involves some energetic moves. That sort of mike then comes in handy so she can sing on the move. Just one of her talents which puts your opera women in the shadows!!! Hence her occasional breathy sound which some morons criticise. She stays in tune too...
VinnyLog 6 months ago
@VinnyLog Opera singers can act a whole lot better than KJ - look at. scenes from operas, Most "opera women" are required to act and they act with both their voices and bodies a whole lot better than KJ. Look - you are arguing about something you don't know anything about. Here is some acting for you: /watch?v=UlGMlxElB3A or another singer: /watch?v=NYm7oJXVeks As to KJ, seriously, do you really think she portrays Carmen? Hint: Carmen isn't a proper English lady.
jewelmarkess 6 months ago
@VinnyLog Sorry, but real opera singers act out roles and move about the stage WITHOUT A MIC. Jenkins's breathy sound comes from not breathing properly for singing. Listen to real opera singers moving about the stage, acting out the role they're singing, and not audibly gulping for air the way KJ does.
arpeggio1358 6 months ago
@VinnyLog BTW - "Canto Del Terra" is a popular song, it has nothing to do with opera, so it's the type of stuff KJ should sing. Also, in this other video I gave you a link to, it's Elina Garanca's live performance at the Met which is a 3800-feet theater and which as all opera theaters uses no amplification. This is another performance at the Met in a different opera: /watch?v=ST1foXaRr_E - a whole lot more difficult aria than anything you've heard.
jewelmarkess 6 months ago
@VinnyLog I feel sorry fo you because you can't get past looks. KJ is such an inferior singer. She's a pretty face with limited talent. Obviously you can't enjoy a singer unless there's a pretty face and body to look at on the CD cover or in the video. Sad.
arpeggio1358 6 months ago
@arpeggio1358 Agreed. If one wasn't looking at the pretty blonde barbie piping the aria, he would click away as soon as the fat lady opens her mouth. Then again, maybe prettier singers will save the dying art form? Would be nice if there were more pretty AND talented opera singers!
asifthroughsleep 6 months ago
@asifthroughsleep I hope this isn't true. Opera has always been about the voices. Unfortunately, there is a tendency these days to hire pretty faces with less than stellar voices in some opera houses. It's deplorable.I'd hate to think that Sills or Caballe couldn't get hired if they appeared on the scene today Then, there HAVE been some pretty faces who have great voices: Anna Moffo, Garanca, Sam Ramey, Franco Corelli among others.
arpeggio1358 6 months ago
@forknskewer The mic is probably for recording purposes. Notice that it's not right up in her face. Your house decoration analogy is not valid. The voice is what matters in opera. Some opera directors have stooped to hiring pretty faces with less that exceptional voices, and the opera fans don't like it. Garanca may look pretty, but what matters is her exceptional voice.

@forknskewer Depends on the size of hall and the acoustics. Also the microphone may be there for recording purposes rather than amplification
dnmurphy48 6 months ago
@dnmurphy48 It probably is there for recording purposes. Also, mics are sometimes used in large outdoor venues
with poor acoustics. It's hard to tell whether this is indoors or outdoors.

oh dear lord, this is. . . .this is. . . I'm afraid all the words of the human langauge are unable to do justice to this dames' rendition.
However with that said, I still prefer the original Maria Callas.
TheGreatVarholy 7 months ago
@TheGreatVarholy It's fine that you prefer Callas - who by the way was a soprano while Elina is a mezzo soprano, we all have our favorites. But why do you call Callas "the original"? Carmen was written long before Callas was born. Actually, I don't believe Callas even sang the role, only the aria. BTW, Elina is probably the best mezzo today (among alive singers), but check out also Rinat Shaham in this, I think you'll like her.

lynird 7 months ago
@lynird This is a studio recording. Scroll the same page down to the editorial review. It says "This recording was made near the end of Maria Callas's career. It is a role she never sang onstage, but it suited her almost perfectly, and she gives a deep, compelling performance on this recording."
jewelmarkess 7 months ago
@jewelmarkess I use "original" because Maria Callas' performance is the one I first remember hearing. I like her voice and expressiveness in the old video clips.
I don't even know what the blue hell the plot is about on any of 'em, let alone what the hell they are singing about.
Opera is for lack of any polite refined and respectful phrases--Melodramatic, trite, loud and plain damn boring. Like some damn soap opera but with folks singing in some other undecipherable language.
TheGreatVarholy 7 months ago
@TheGreatVarholy I see your point. I don't know which operas you've heard, but the stories do differ, some silly, but some realistic and good - many are based on famous works of literature. In terms of words - there are subtitles in all opera theaters these days. There is also much beautiful music in opera outside of a couple of famous arias. Carmen has many beautiful, easily recognizable melodies. BTW - there are some subtitled performances of habanera here, Antonacci's comes to mind.
jewelmarkess 7 months ago
@jewelmarkess NO THANK YOU I DON'T WANT TO CHECK THIS UNKNOWN OUT. Stop telling people to check things out!!! People have different taste. None of your opera singers would be brave enough to perform acrobatic moves in the air without safety net or wire while AT THE SAME TIME sing a song in tune. You should bow down to the feet of Kath Jenkins and kiss them!!!
VinnyLog 6 months ago
@VinnyLog Yes, people have different tastes. So why don't you just admit that you like pop and aren't interested in opera and don't know anything about opera and aren't qualified to say who is or isn't an opera singer? You like pop and you prefer KJ's POPish sound, this is fine. You can't have it both ways. If you aren't interested in opera, admit your ignorance. If you want to argue about it, learn about it. And grow up.
jewelmarkess 6 months ago
@jewelmarkess You and your alter ego arpeggio go on about the power of a true opera singer not needing a mic' in the venue due to their prowess. Singing a song is about conveying a story to the listener. NOT belting top notes all the time. You don't know how to enjoy/listen to a song. The singer tells the story in melody and makes it interesting using their skills and when it ends the listener says '' Aaw NICE ''. You shouldnt analyse or compare the singer to others. Its NOT competition.
