Loved this show. But it was a B-17 sitting on the runway, a B-29 starting up, a Lancaster going down the runway, a B-17 again taking off, and then magically turned into a Focke-Wulf 200 when it got into the air.
From the time Shultze left the plane until the time Hogan finished talking to the General, the plane would have probably flew another 50 miles. Woulda' made a long walk back to camp.
@clintonearlwalker At 300 mph, at most they'd have travelled a couple of miles, ie 5 miles a minute. When you're dropping people you slow down to just above stall speed so at most they'd have been strung out by about a mile.
@bobcat188 That's a great theory and wonderful math assuming they weren't at 30,000 feet and the wind wasn't blowing. The D-day parachute drop "Numerous factors affected their performance, the primary of which was the decision to make a massive parachute drop at night (a tactic not used again for the rest of the war). As a result, 45% of units were widely scattered and unable to rally."-Wikipedia In fact, many captured American paratroopers can be seen in YouTube videos.
@clintonearlwalker Of course HALO drops (High altitude low opening) which 30,000 feet would have been, didn't exist until the Viet Nam era. One of the major factors affecting the D-day drops was the flak, which caused the pilots to maneuver forcing them off course, they don't show any in this episode. In other cases, the pilots just plain got lost and dropped miles off course. Since flying is how I earn my living, and I've dropped meat bombs to build time, my math's good, lol
@bobcat188 My uncle was a flight engineer on C-141's in Vietnam (an many other places), his math is very good also. He adjusted the propeller pitch as well as being a mechanic on both piston and radial engines.
@noclouds111 yeah and there all supposed to be german..... welcome to reality when there isnt alot of video of these planes back then.... hell even now!
@noclouds111 by the way read up on your ww2 aircraft thats a lancaster taking off also a b17, hey a german plane a ju290 i believe..... there are like 5 diffrent planes in here haha theres a b29 and the inside cockpit scenes i believe are a b25.......
@nick21sammy Unlike today, most shows back then had next to no budget, so they used the same sets for many different settings. In this case they probably just used WWII era stock footage, instead of spending a lot of money to film new scenes.
Carter was my favorite. He's like The Mad Bomber. He's always excited when dealing with his explosive experiments. You should see his history. He comes from bomber rednecks.
Who cares about accuracy? It's a frikin comedy and one of the best ones ever!! Yes to the guy that said the general was also inspector lugar. Barney Miller was another side splitting comedy!!! [PS-Hilda was smokin'!!!]
@GoPatriots100 I was talking about @0:04 where they are cranking an engine over. I'm pretty confident that's a B-29. The intro shot, yeah, looks like a B-17.
@fyg4 I will tell you something bro, I believe I know the areas that I have lived in very well. But recognize them from the air? You are probably a pilot!
@fyg4 Thanks for the link, and yes, the area is really similar and can definitely be the same. Probably they have used some spy footage of the Atlantic Wall in this episode.

Most shows today can't touch this. This blows 2 and a half men or another crap comedy out of the water.

first shot: B-17
Engine start: B-29
Taxing: Avro Lancaster.
Takeoff: B-17
Flying: FW 200 Condor
They really should just choose one plane for the shots

@117Nomad im aware of that but in the story its supposed to be a "Heinkel 111" 2 engined bomber. theres plenty of stock footage of them

Terrific episode, I really love how they blend the WWII stock-footage so well with the Crosby-produced stuff, almost seamless.
Also, the general of this episode is really quite the magnificent bastard, at least he thinks he is.
