The great thing I see about Portnoy ( and a lot of drummers I like) is that their style is generally so unique that if you just played the drum tracks to their songs alone you can still tell what song it is. Thats what makes a great drummer to me, not speed or how cool you look on stage playing, but if you can lay a beat that people can recognise without the other instruments. Songs you can recognize with percussion only. Thats what can make a drummer great.
You can't even compare Buddy Rich with Mike Portnoy...they both played in different time periods with a different genre and style. You can't say Mike sucks because Buddy is better than him, they are totally different. So unless you have a legitimate excuse for an arguement between the two, your comment will be ignored. Mike is one of the best modern drummers alive, if not the best.

true, he's not the best drummer on the planet, i'll agree. but, he works really well with dream theater. buddy rich couldn't write music even close to as well as portnoy can. buddy rich had the chops, but i think portnoy is an all around musician, more so than buddy rich. and a lot of buddy rich's big band songs sound the same, too. just really flashy and loud all the time. i mean, dt gets like that too, sometimes. but they've got the melody too. and portnoy writes a lot of it.

What a glorious song! Perfect balance of musical progression through minor to major. Excellent lyrics telling an emotional story in an earnest and relational manner. Beautiful musical mastery and expression. Truly a classical composition in nearly every sense, just with modern perspective and performance. You could just as easily have a classical symphony perform this piece with nearly the same gravity. This piece is just about perfect!
One thing I like about Dream Theater is that their sound has broken limits of progressive rock so much that we can play their tunes as classical pieces ;)

excelent song, awesome drummer, and the best band ever. Personaly, the beggining is very simple and it continious doing the same a lot of time, but when the heavy part starts.... Men, a god is playing that drum kit.
