  • I think we should ingore LottoWinner999 for now on, becouse he is propably just one troubled and mentally handicapped child who doesn't know what he is talking about. I actually feel sorry for him

  • Thanks for posting. Interesting and informative. It must take ages to source the clips and the effort is much appreciated.

  • The Bell's were ordered so the Air Corps could gain experience with jet aircraft in squadron service. Think of it as a similiar position held by the Heinkel 280. The XP-55 was originally supposed to have a P&W X-1800 24 cylinder sleeve valve. P&W dropped their sleeve valve designs to concentrate development on the R-4360 with Air Corps approval.

  • It was pretty decent of the British announcer not to mention that the P 59 was powered by British engines (or GE copies).

  • The Curtiss XP-55 Ascender - or "Ass-Ender", as it was sometimes known.

  • Great video. Would seem the priority was to make the meteor reliable and useful so that it wasnt a retrograde step. The me262 uber advanced myth continues but the P80 and DH Vampire were a generation ahead of it in aerodynamic efficiency and reliability. The Ta 183 improved was built as the pulqui and was a dog. Swept/delta is not automatically more advanced, see f102 vs f104 and the area rule.

  • The German Jets in mass production were about 15 years ahead of these prototypes in the mid 40ies. The German designs of that time are put in production today.... Where is progress?

  • @ziegle9876 Don't forget the USA was buidling the Atomic Bomb, 4,000 B-29 Bombers, we were fighting In Europe and all over the Pacific. At the same time USA built the biggest and best 2 ocean Navy. We Supplied Lend Lease to Britain + Russia + built the world biggest merchant fleet. If we needed to perfect a Jet would would have done so + on April 29th 1945 Germany was defeated. We defeated Japs with 2 American built + designed Nukes which was the ulitmate weapon of WW2! Germans R Losers!!!

  • @LottoWinner999 This is not about we won or we lost. The fact is that in the technical area, German aircraft were so far ahead of the Allied that people who knew were shocked when they found out after victory. The fact is also that the National-SOCIALIST economic system was inferior to what the US had at that time. Also, in order to quell mis-content in the German population, a large part of industrial production was reserved for consumer goods, not war machines, at least until 1944.

  • @ziegle9876 Please remove your head from ur asshole no nation can match American industrial capability. Roosevelt said we need an A-Bomb which was much more difficult to manufacture than a jet. If Roosevelt wanted worlds fastest jet it be built it in the thousands USA is first N aviation, way ahead of Germany. Example Howard Hughes 1937 Lockheed Constelation 4 engine comercial airliner, pressurized cabin, 125 Passengers, crusing speed 367 MPH + could fly NY to London without refueling.

  • @LottoWinner999 "no nation can match American industrial capability."

    PS: Britain then; China now.

    Not match; beat.

  • @ziegle9876 You should watch "Northropp Aviation 1" on youtube and see the first twin enigine powered flying wing developed from 1929 and flew in 1939 +1940. Howard Hughes ordered 125 Lockheed Constelation 4 engine comercial airliner, pressurized cabin, 125 Passengers, crusing speed 367 MPH + could fly NY to London without refueling were being be delivered just B4 Pearl Harbor. The US governement commendeered every one of them so Huhes had to wait to launch TWA in 1948.

  • @ziegle9876 - You overstate the facts, it is commonly believed that Germany was "technically superior", but in the end that claim never holds up, EXCEPT in the field of Rocketry ( where they were the only country to have a fully-funded program during the war ) and submarines ( where Germany clearly had the best sub produced in the war ). These as well were the only two areas that were persued after the war in any real way.

  • @LottoWinner999

The first A-Bombs were developed jointly between the US, UK and Canada. And saying 'if we needed to perfect a jet we would have done so" is just silly. That fact is you didn't.

America is a great country, but don't think you pioneered everything; that simply isn't true.

  • TheMightyHartley The A-Bomb was 2-Billion Dollar 100% USA Project created by American Born Nuclear Physicst Robert Oppenheimer who mananged USA Nuclear Physicists + those who emigrated to USA epecailly Eisntein, Teller,Szilard, Bohthke + Fermi all became proud American Citizens. Twas Oppenehimers + Ensteins letter delivered to FDR on 10/3/39 that created Manhatten Project 2 years ahead of Chruchill Commitee on 9/3/41. Only the USA had the massive resources + industry to build the Atomic Bomb.

  • @LottoWinner999 Well not 100%. Britain started the tube alloys project in 39. This later merged into the Manhattan project. For this project a plant was built in Canada to process uranium which did the initial milling of the fuel for the Manhattan bombs. The implosion technique required to detonate the A bomb came from British research. You are right, only the US had the resources.Germany never came close to producing the bomb not just because it lacked the resources but because it didn't try

  • @binaway Germans were not aware of the vast amount of electricity needed to make manufacture enriched uranium. At Oak Ridge Facility they one built a dam for the massive amount of electricity needed for cyclatrons . In addition they had 1000 machine in the largest building in the USA there were manned by women 24/7 who would turned dial + pulled levers when light flashed on + off. These machine seperateed U235 + U238 in small amounts for Little Boy. I cannot remember the name of the machine .

  • @binaway Little Sorry you wrong, Little Boy a Uranium gun device was guaranteed to work. Plutonium Bomb was difficult, Oppenheimers team came with the implosion method but had problems with the detonator. Two British explosive experts using plastic explosives helped build a prefectly round shaped charge that encompassed the Plutonium Core causing the force of the charge to go inward. Protons + Neutrons get hot, expand + are going so fast they split the atom + kaboom U have the plutonium bomb.

  • @LottoWinner999 I suggest you investigate the history of the 1943 Quebec Agreement, the heavy water plant in British Columbia, the uranium milling plant in Quebec ( which was the western worlds only plant for the initial processing of uranium as late as the 1980's). No doubt only the US had the resources to build the bomb and did by far the vast majority of the work. Australian Mark Oliphant was part of the Tube Alloys project who transferred to LosAlamos and worked there from 1943 to 1945

  • @binaway It was not the only source of Uranium and US scientists that all the work because you tried to make it out like UKdid every thing. The Atomic Bomb was 100% American invention and most believed it would not work accept Oppenheimer, Roosevelt and few others. Also it was USA that built the 1ST functioning reactors. USA establsihed its heavy water production at 5 locations and Canadian heavy water was not used until 1944 and Canada + Britain knew nothing of ther Atomic bomb. U need to read!

  • @LottoWinner999 lool you replied to 4 months old comment..pathetic

  • @LottoWinner999 YOU need to read. The entire Tube Alloys nuclear research in the UK is what started the Manhattan Project. America tried post-war to bar British researched and developed tech from leaving the US, but to no avail since Westinghouse gave the British reactor take to RR in the UK. What an idiot you are.

  • @binaway Little Boy the Uranium was simple bomb that require 140 pound of Uranium but it took 4 years to enrich that much Uranium. Oppenheimer learned that Plutonium was bi-procuct of running a Uranium Reactor + they had plenty of it but the Plutonium hard to detonate until perfected the conventional shaped charge to cause in implosion. Most folls did not USA had 6 Fatman bombs after Nagasaki just in case 2 Nuke was not enough to convince the Japanese to surrender.

  • @binaway BTW the implosion Method did not come from Britain + Chuchill did not know about the Manhatten Project until the bomb had was ready for use 1945. Most of the Uranium for the USA Nukes came form Navajo Reservation cuz no wanted to others USA buying large amouts of raw Uranium. The A-bomb was 100% USA invention and did not come from British Research period. USA had all the scientists + Oppenheimer born in the USA was the brain. Please don't insult the US, U Brits did nothing.

  • @LottoWinner999 Yet more nonsense. And now you are trying to claim that Einstein was American. Lol, this is pointless. Debate has ended. You lost, I won. But thanks for playing.

  • @MrStig691 Einstein became an American citizen in 1931 and he hated Britain because of how nasty the Brits are to Jewish people.

  • @LottoWinner999 It had nothing to do with USA's industry, which in fact was not up to par with industrial pioneer Britain with it's already over working production capabilities. Research was moved to the US because that is much further away from Germany, and where the fuck do you think you can detonate a nuclear device in the UK troll?

  • @TheMightyHartley - you're right about the Manhattan project coming from a joint-Allied beginning, but it as well true that the US did not put a priority on a jet fighter because they didnt really need one. Very much like the story behind the minimal production of the Pershing tank in favor of building thousands of Shermans. The US needed long-range escorts and close air support fighters, neither job was well suited for any jet in the 1940's. Jets were perfect for defensive ops, not offense..

  • @LottoWinner999 "At the same time USA built the biggest and best 2 ocean Navy"

Negative. That was the Royal Navy

"built the world biggest merchant fleet"

Negative. That was the British Merchant Navy.

  • @MrStig691 Your full of shit Britain has pop gun navy that compare to the US Navy especially US Submarines. During WW Brtain did not have a two ocean navy that was not as big and not as good as US Ships. Your aircraft carriers were dinky doos that were easily sunk and the swordfish planes were a joke compared to US Navy planes..

  • @ziegle9876 - what german designs are in production today?

  • @OPE08 stealth planes

  • @DeathRow200 - Germany did not "invent" stealth technology, it was claimed by one unsuccessful designer years after the war. Unless you can name a specific aircraft and support the accusation?

  • @OPE08 Horten Ho-229, designed to be more difficult to detect with radar. The first aircraft to incorporate what is now known as stealth technology. +ho-229 is flying wing

  • @DeathRow200 Negative. The Hortens began their interest in wings at the same time military radar went active in the world, and not a word of "stealth" was claimed until the 1970's. Whay would they be building "stealth" gliders in 1934?

The HoIXV3 prototype ( which you and many call the Ho229 ) was not stealth in any way EXCEPT for the fact that flying wings are naturally less detectable by radar.

  • @OPE08 Göring wanted new aircraft that english radars wont see so easily. And ho-229/gotha-229 was exactly what Göring wanted, "stealth" aircraft, what was difficult see in the radar. Just try to get over it. And it really is called Horten ho-229 or Gotha go-229.

  • @DeathRow200 The Horten brothers started work on flying wings in 1933, that had nothing to do with Goering, and "stealth" had nothing to do with choosing the Hortens design. The flying wing concept was a good bet for the 3x1000 requirements. "Stealth" is never mentioned anywhere in the projects history.

And the production prototype was the HoIXV3, the production model would have been the Go229.

  • @OPE08 alright alright... let's take couple cold beers and relax

  • @DeathRow200 - Cheers

  • @DeathRow200 Bullshit Hitler and the German had no idea that the flying winf as stealthy thats Nazi bullshits. JustGoogle "Northropp 1929 Twin Engine Flying Wing" + learn Northopps 1929 Twin Engine Flying Wing flew 16 years ahead of the Hooter Bruders who built theirs in 1945. Goring was an idiot morphine addict who wore womens negligees + was complete bungler. Please Nazi had no idea of stealth your just anouther Nazi Buffon like U trying to claim USA technology for your Fuhrer + USA was 1ST!

  • @LottoWinner999 "for your fuhrer" WTF DUDE???!!

Do you think i'm nazi? I'm not even german.

"USA was 1ST" LOL typical redneck... You "heroes" nuked Nagasaki and Hiroshima while we fought against USSR and communism

  • @DeathRow200 Finland was a Nazi ally and your a nation of reindeer fucking assholes that got butt-fucked by the Russian. U know nothing about the Japanese and how the USA defeated Germany and Japan. U did not defeat Communism in fact the Russians owned and pawned your finnish assholes. U Finn sucked Russian dick to stay alive and your jealous of the USA because Finland is a shit stain on the map of Europe. Go fuck yourself.

  • @LottoWinner999 Lol this is most pathetic shit I've ever heard... You don't cleary have any idea what happened in here in 1939 between 1945.

Winter war 1939: 1 000 000 men and thousands of tanks and planes on soviet side, we had 340 000 men, and few tanks and airplanes. Soviet union lost +120 000 men, we lost 25 000.

Continuation War 1941-44: Finland had to ally with Germany for weapons and equipment. Soviet union lost 200 000 men and we lost 60 000.

  • @LottoWinner999 Oh I almost forgot the Lapland war. This war was fought against NAZI GERMANY in 1945!

You sir, are the most retarded person I've ever met. You don't know anything of history and you believe soviet propaganda. We should wipe out every single communist scum like you. You, are a shit stain of the world.

  • @DeathRow200 Your a Nazi lover who sucks Nazi and Finland was a disgusting ally of Nazi Germany that sent Jews to concentration camps in Germany. Fuck yourself with your own lies must make you fell better and your a copy cat, meeeow!

  • @LottoWinner999 Nobody takes you seriosly anymore, communist scum. Everyone hates you, even in internet.

  • @DeathRow200 Well I got news for you and that is people hate Nazi Scumbags like your more than any one in the world, Up yours Nazi Mauthafucka!

  • @LottoWinner999 You forgot one thing I'm not nazi... Worst trolls ever, comm.

  • propeller jettison!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I had an old vet tell me they called it the Ass-Ender. lol

  • That E28 is so ugly it's pretty.

  • The first Plane looks like a J7W1 Shinden from the japanese air force in WW2!!!

  • holy!! is this a copy of IJN Shinden? who came first ,this or Shinden?

  • They were probably not connected but the designers came to the same conclusion about layout. Get the prop out of the way at the back and put some heavy armament closely clustered at the front. The Curtis was very unstable and difficult to turn smoothly. One was lost in testing and the project was dumped. The Shinden flew briefly but they didn't develop it very far.

  • The Shinden was designed as a response to the B29.

The Xp55 was designed in 39/40

The Canard style aircraft was already known in the 1930's

  • The Me 262 was the first jet to go into combat, and the Arado 234 was the first jet bomber to fly bombing and recon missions.

  • Point of interest:

Early jets were referred to as "blow jobs" by American test pilots.

  • The XP-55 is is the closest we ever got inreal history to the Devastator from Crimson Skies... ;-) A nice collection overall, especially the archaic jet fighters...

  • isn't the first one a japanese kyushu shinden?

  • No, the Shinden had a radial engine and the tail fins were on the fuselage, not the wing tips.

  • XP-55 Ascender

  • i would say it was inspired by the Shinden combined with new experience in aviation

  • No the Asender came 2 years before the Shinden

  • Okay

  • i wonder if there are any still in flying condition?

i think there's one at duxford...

  • that bell thing was crap and couldn't climb straight up such lies in this video lol

  • Yes I quite agree. A good 150mph slower than the Me262!

  • The P-59 was slower than a P-51D mustang! It was a useful test bed, but that's it. Shame it didn't show the Lockheed YP-80--a real jet fighter.

  • LIke the Meteor the YP-80 was still clasified at the time this video was made

  • Some great, unique footage.

One thing is that this was 1945, and secrecy might have still been an issue. The British Meteor wasn't shown either, but their original test jet plane was, similar to the relationship between the XP-59 and the P-80 I would guess.

They also mentioned that the British were the first to use jets in combat, not sure at the time if all the German stuff was known or being made known publically in the US and Britain.

Great stuff, and rare now. Great time capsule!

  • GB really was the first, commissioned Metereo in May 1944, few month earlier than Reich's Me262.The Metereo together with its squadron relocated to mainland europe in Jan,1945.

Two never encountered in air combat, though.

  • It's semantics.

The Meteor was released to squadron service a week before the 262 was, so you could say the brits were first. However the 262 usually gets the credit because its service area was an active war-zone while the first squadron to get the meteor was in England where it was used against the V2..

  • Thank you!

It seems to be the 262 gets a lot more press than the Meteor and the P-80, and the British engines were better.

I agree about your semantics. Meteor was engaged in active defense, even against pilotless bombs, and I am sure the people of London were grateful for them!

  • @OPE08 The Meteor was used against the V1 NOT the V2

  • @garrington120 - Yes, of course, thanks for the correction...

  • @seeksthetruth7 I wouldn't say it was crap. Bell was about as forward thinking as they came back then. Some of their ideas didn't pan out as well as hoped but still, they were thinking. The P 59 had a perfectly good airframe. First generation jet engines were the problem. And, American engines were a little behind British ones at first.

  • LOL, this planes is made by germans sientist/air craft makers ho made the ME262 under ww2. The Amarican plane looks like a mod. copy.

  • this would have been cool to have during the war

  • The Xp-59 was a lame jet, I'd rather be in that P-63 with a piston engine.

  • Lol "new american fighter" It's a rip off off the Japanese shinden!

  • yep

  • That or some of the workers at the plant where they made P-40's turned up drunk...

  • @SmiertSpionem Due to war time security I doubt the Americans knew about the Shinden until after the war, nor the Japanese the XP-55. The Wright brother flier was a canard design with the main wing at the back with the prop pushing.

  • American B-29s seriously got owned by Chinese MiG-15s in Korean War...

  • And why not?? They were a 10 year older design at least, and a bomber. The Sabre vs Mig ratio might be more instructive I think..

  • Keep 'em coming, BomberGuy!
