I really dont like this version of pigmalion, i much prefer the most recent one and My Fair Lady is better, the songs really tell a story and they bring the play to life.
God this is so uncomfortable to watch and yet, it is hysterical. I prefer this to My Fair Lady, though I thought Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn were excellent. I think this movie is closer to what Shaw envisioned and probably why he took the risk.
Wendy Hiller was a marvel. She was so adorable when she said "Not bloody likely...". I could totally sympathize with Freddy then. I would have been smitten too. And Leslie Howard is underappreciated as Higgins as well.
It's so weird to see Leslie Howard in a funny role! I've only seen him as Ashley Wilkes in GWTW, and I loved him in that. Now I want to see this movie!!!
He didn´t write it. He wrote a postfacium to the story when the producers started to make that "ambigious" ending to please the audiences. The original play ends with Eliza going to her father´s wedding and Higgins laughing about her engagement to Fred.
Shaw said that Eliza, as the smart woman
she was, would much rather take a man to search for her slippers (Fred) than searching for Henry´s slippers. He said that Eliza and Fred got married, but she continued to take care of Higgin´s house.
Oh Lord! Priceless! This is my favorite play of all time...'My Fair Lady' was a debacle, in my opinion...they changed the ending. Higgins would NEVER have gotten with a woman. Not ever. And, although I believe Eliza was in love with Higgins, she had the common sense to get out. Shaw wrote notes to tell what happened after the end of the play...she married Wet Freddie. Was this a wise move? Not bloody likely!
@LittleHarriet Personally, I think that Eliza was spying on her father Mr. Higgins. I know, one should never do a romantic thing with father and daughter but it really wasn't romantic until he asked for "his slippers". Other than that, there was no romance whatsoever. It is wise to marry a Freddie cause Freddie is so harmless considering the types that she could have married...rite? Still, Freddie had merit. He didn't care at all that he married a flower girl with or without a mother or father.
@iriswigle I'm sorry to sound contrary but that's not the story here. Higgins and Eliza AREN'T related at all. Her father whom she discusses in this scene is quite a different character, shown on just two occasions; near the beginning after she comes to Higgins' house asking for lessons, and close to the end when he accuses Higgins of "destroying [his] happiness." Otherwise the story is interesting, and Higgins and Eliza's relationship, while curious, is for the most part, intriguing.
What planet do you come from - planet America, I think. Howard was dismissive of his role in GWTW, and returned to England shortly after. H then appeared in several British movies of the early war period, including "49th Parallel" and "First of the Few" (also as Producer.
He was shot down over the Bay of Biscay in 1943 on a secret mission for the British government
@racingrubberbiker He was shot down like in a movie? Cause in real life he was a godfather to an orphan boy in 1968 and they said he did rather a terrific job at it while living in the LA area.
This is one of my favourite films! Eliza is great, Pickering's so kind, and naturally Higgins is unbelievably arrogant, intelligent and a singular character!
Pygmalion, in my opinion, is far better than My Fair Lady - Rex Harrison freaks me out. But I didn't like the ending of Pygmalion - they appealed to the audience with a romantic ending instead of using the original ending of the play.
i didn't mean any negative thing!!! I love him but it is so funny, that he wasn't really a real-birn Englishman, although many people consider him as a real English gentleman. i love him and his talent: he is the only actor from that era whose films I always watch..

This has the same ending as my fair lady...Shaw wrote this more romantic/albeit ambigious ending.

Yes Lesley Howard never worked in Britain again after this outpouring of foul language. he did quite well in Gone With the Wind though.

Brilliant...Freddie was such a moron. He's like one of the Upper Class Twits from Monty Python. Great story (though I've yet to see the film)
