  • Jackson Brown cares a lot about peace in Central America. But he can't keep the peace in his living room with Daryl Hannah. Years ago I wanted to go to the first row of a Jackson Brown concert and hold up a huge poster of Daryl Hannah kissing the late John F. Kennedy, Jr..

  • I miss the original with pan-flute.

  • My dad bought this tape and I used to play this song on his Sony stereo-over & over.

  • Thumbs up if you think 'Lives in the Balance' should be the new American national anthemn!

  • The only person that is running for president that has been consistant for decades the only one that can be trusted. Ron Paul stated as president he will immediatly remove american forces from these wars. He further stated he would follow the constitution as President and not involve this country in wars of agression and unconstitutional undeclared by congress wars. If for no other reason we all need to support Ron Paul for president. Unless you want more of the same broken promises.

  • @TheTime4solutions I lost hope for the US. Broken promises, yeah, why do you assume it would be different with another guy? Either he becomes a useful puppet or he will be destroyed before he becomes president. Take a look at Strauss-Kahn; all it takes is a girl that shouts "rape" and he's away behind bars till after the election. Problem solved. They don't even need assassins anymore.

  • @Vaudeviller well the way i see it. ITs a leaderless revolution that has started a long time ago but through the internet two way information age the ability to learn of this accelerated dramaticly. There is a race going on between about 250 people on one side and about 7billion people on the other. When a critical mass of the 7Billion reject the USURY and False national debt and the extorted theft uphanized to tax control system the system will implode upon its self as all evil does

  • @Vaudeviller Its not about who is the current installed sold out whore puppet of the RatCHild family in the so called position of president. Its about when we will resist and reject enough to end their harm to humanity.

  • @TheTime4solutions the "RATchild" family???? WOW, you're quite the anit-semite. Tell me, did the filthy Joooos bomb the world trade center too?

  • @pklocek wow you throw your racist terms around so freely, i would want you to try that to my face. if your so stupid that you cant look at history and the crimes of the ROTHSCHILD family your a dumbass. Yet you take the crimes and twist that into your racist remarks. Yet i see your terms are evidence of your racist supremist beliefs. Dischusting.

  • @pklocek I should report your racist remarks. Why do you refer to any group that way? Its sounds like you know very well what 911 was all about. Are you self hating self loathing is that why you present yourself is such a discusting way. Truth is truth follow the money to the debt issue fiat Compounding false debt USURY fromthe Rothschild family for 300 years and you want to make it into some rediculus religious thing. what a stupid stupid excuse for a human.

  • @pklocek btw what is a SEMITE? For you acuse me of being ANTI or against Semite. I bet you dont have a clue. Do you think ANy of the ROthschild family are SEMITE? Is that why you make racist remarks? I think your just a typical evil

  • 24 people are stupid

  • Senator Boxer did not vote for the Iraq War.

  • Jackson Browne is the portal to the soul.

  • Know how amazing Jackson Browne was? This song was released in 1986 and we're using it today to discuss the very same things. If only people listened...

  • History is a river of blood, we're no different from anybody else. I think this clip should include LBJ over the little naked girl in Vietnam. It should include Ike and Reagan and Bush #1 and Nixon. Bush #2 is just a little runt following a long pattern. Thank god they're all gone.

  • Upload date on this is 2006, now it's 2011 and Bush/Obama wants their 4th term.

    Great song.

  • If we don't understand political changes, time we are living in and generations we belong to we will not change anything . Generations of Vietnam war are not the same as generations of Iraqi war .

  • @mojoboy1984 its all the same to the people killed. It doesn't matter where the people die, the imporant thing is that they die and they shouldn't.

  • Great video and song

  • Every bullet represents one less mouth needing to be fed

  • THis is my favourite song and im playing it for the Marist College Ahsgrove Battle of the Bands

  • Jackson is right about the government and wrong about capitalism. I love this song. It is true. However the big government nanny state is the real culprit, along with the unions. Leave us alone and allow us to prosper. Ayn Rand is right, regulations along with union thugs are the real problems.

  • @ladyoftherepublic no, idiots like you are the problem..."Ayn Rand is right" ?? "union thugs" ?? "nanny state" ?? "allow us to prosper" ?? is money and profit the answer to everything for you?

  • @ladyoftherepublic no, idiots like you are the problem..."Ayn Rand is right" ?? "union thugs" ?? "nanny state" ?? "allow us to prosper" ?? is money and profit the answer to everything for you?

    Good luck with that.

  • @ladyoftherepublic no, idiots like you are the problem..."Ayn Rand is right" ?? "union thugs" ?? "nanny state" ?? "allow us to prosper" ?? is money and profit the answer to everything for you?

    Good luck with that.

  • @ladyoftherepublic UNION THUGS ? who is doing the killing, its not unions! unions help working people, the US. GOV. - bushobama murder , & they dont care who or how many they murder!

  • 24 people can't handle the truth now

  • fantastic video - i need to find more from the person who put this together ....

  • @unplugthis1 google - is it for freedum

  • And yet Ron Paul is an Ayan Rand "libertarian/"cronie capitalist". These are the very ONES who build their fortunes on war and the destruction of the rest of us. Do not be fooled. We are electing lobbyists and businessmen who have NO shame when it comes to taking whatever they can for them and theirs and leaving the rest of us to die in the streets. They are the ones Franklin warned us about, who, having figured out how to pay themselves via government funds, threaten the Republic.

  • powerful

  • When Jackson Browne played this song last night, it was so freakin' powerful. Ottawa was privileged to have him.

  • I love New York????? REALLY???? U love ur city by destroying another one? Is that how u show ur love????? :(

  • V4Victory ~ TLC

  • Things could be so much better if we just stop hating each other

  • @lincoln3000 I wish that too, friend. Man is just too corrupt. From the beginning of time there have always been wars and there always will be wars. I dont know if you are a God fearing person, but i think its time we all "looked up". Man's headed down a path of destruction. One of the few things we've perfected is how to kill. It was never supposed to be that way.

  • @zestydude87 I think a better answer is for us to be rational. We're a newly evolved species (100-250k yrs.) and our technological achievements have FAR outpaced our maturity as a species. We are however self-aware and able to say "I am", we are able to see the effects that we have on ourselves and those around us. This awareness should allow us to force ourselves to evolve. There's no hope otherwise.

  • Did George Bush Flip Off A Camera????

  • Since we know the true motivations for the wars in the Iraq and Afghanistan, is it really inconceivable that bin Laden has already been killed? A 50 something rich boy on dialysis living in one of the most remote, inhospitable places on earth for a decade? After all, a dead boogie-man isn't an effective propaganda tool.

  • fab

  • So we Change Presidents but Policy doesn't ?????

  • the PAULS are psycho

  • It's been almost exactly 8 years since Iraq invasion and here we are again with Libya at our doorstep. When will we learn- thank you JB

  • Awesome

  • To the 23 who turned the thumb down, PLEASE don't drop the teapot!

  • Sure, commenters, play politics while people die.

You might as well fiddle while Rome burns, because the vultures you fight to defend have no loyalty to your country or people, and when the money is gone, so will they be.

  • I was so glad to have found this song a couple of years ago. I think it's the ultimate pacifist song. Strong words with his subtile voice. Love the version with the panflute also...

  • As a Canadian reading the two solitudes' dialogue I just have to sigh, shake my head and enjoy the rattle.

  • Video is very good, but the images could be updated to include Obama (President Hogwash) and his band of corporate servants -- Holder, Clinton, Gates, etc.

  • Comment removed

  • @Aiden057 that wouldn't make any sense.. do you understand the lyrics and subject matter? This song has nothing to do with you not liking democrats and everything to do with the powers that be profiting from creating and funding war against humanity no matter whose lives are lost... this would include Bush, Cheney and whoever else is tied to that group.... Blackwater, Erik Prince, etc. Take your tea party hatred elsewhere please.

  • @Kerry211 I see you completely misunderstood my comments. I understand the context of the original song, but if you think Obama and his cronies are doing any better than a previous administration, you have not been paying attention. As far as the Tea Party goes, I think they are full of hot air.

  • I was 15 when I bought this album; the US involvement with Nicaragua was at its peak and my country promoted wholesale murder in the name of capitalism.

When I heard this song I knew that one day a time would come when the men who perpetrated these crimes and all of the misdoings of the United States would have to answer to the world.

We are seeing it in Egypt now and I am certain that I will live to see it happen in America as well.

  • @wittenbergdropout I accidentally gave you a thumbs down, so I'm commenting to say I agree.

  • @flyingmonkeyskin The Occupy movement is the indicator that Americans are sick of the BS and are ready to mobilize and demonstrate. Once the global financial crisis hits rock-bottom early next year, millions of Americans will be unified because of the massive hardship. Together we can cause a peaceful shutdown of society the likes that has only been seen in Ghandi's time. End the bailouts, end the wars, and leash the corps.

  • @wittenbergdropout OWS is dead. It was astroturf from start to finish. If you want an authentic movement, join the TEA Party.

  • @wittenbergdropout What you see in Egypt is a Muslim revolution that will be worst then anything that was there befoere. same as in Iran.

  • Great, makes me weep. Thanks for posting.

  • The American Empire can not be maintained, the number of troop's abroad is staggering. Every year 600 billion dollar's is spent to ensure the American sphere of influence span's the globe. America has reached it's apex with absolute dominance across the world. Yet the Empire strives for new height's, what people forget is that all empire's eventually fall and many have ruled since the time of man's arrival. I loved what America stood for, helping your fellow man, once hero's now a force of evil

  • GET DOWN JACKSON BOWNE, GET DOWN AND TELL IT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!! Truthseeker37 thanks for the upload, and You Tube for the lights on the space, damofino I love this song! Jackson Has Gotten It and He doesn't mind sharing it with the rest of us who dare to listen to the TRUTH! Long Live Jackson Browne!

  • Ich sah ihn im Rockpalast. Sein Auftritt war "durchwachsen...

aber diese Stück ist einfach .... wichtig....

  • 18 people can't handle truth.

  • @USAdude30 AMEN!!!!!!

  • @ThePeaceis Umm,ok?

  • Comment removed

  • @USAdude30 His music is alive, intelligent in it's delivery and passionate about what it stands for. He is loved and he is hated. I'm not so impressed by those who love him as I am by those who hate him. Because, when you're hated, it's an indication that your message is raw and unequivocal. People may hate him , but their claim as to such places them naked in front of us all to see.

  • @mlmr11 Hate (fear) is what keeps the misery alive though, and is exactly what this song is AGAINST. There's no need to hate anyone. Hate itself only hurts the hater, not the person it's directed toward. All You Need Is Love.

  • @ThEmIdNiGhTiNtRuDeR I agree 110%. My friend is in a very bad space right now mentally because he is letting his hate drive him. Hate drives you to your destination of misery. I tell him to "tap into the love" let love drive you because it will drive you to a safe destination

  • fuck the goverment!!!!!

  • opt out of the TSA. Opt out of the State!

  • people like Jackson are hard to come by- even as a fairly well known musician he risks popularity and everything for what he believes in- he write music about it, participates in various peaceful organizations, and doesnt just talk like other politicians and celebrities- he takes action

  • This video tells it like it is, especially about the Bush adminisration. The war mongers on the right, and all the money these people make from going to war...how does bush sleep at night..

  • i listen to this through both bush'es

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Brilliant song! Though, I think the plea for peace is always swept under the carpet by the mediaplex.. I hope my suspicions that we need to give up our freedom for a health care INSURANCE policy under penalty of bank account looting is a hump to the ol' big pharmed insurance tax clan. Maybe I can work in a goodwill store to do community service or join that civilian insurrection that is just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded.. No future for me.. God save the queen.

  • ..c'è qualche americano che conosce bene la "politica" americana..io sono il primo a criticare il mio Paese quando è inevitabile..ma di certo il mio punto di riferimento non sono gli USA..buoni solo per la musica ed il cinema..

  • 2:26 - Mission Accomplished...Yea right!

  • "When you know that you've seen it before, where a government lies to a people, and a country is drifting to war." JB wrote this song about U.S. involvement in Central America back in the '80's, when the "seen it before" was Viet Nam. So sad how history keeps repeating itself.

  • thank you, I heard this song in my mind while I watched the French youth, October 19th 2010

  • Great song/ballad, thanks for posting. Too bad the ones who would most benefit by listening to and watching this video are busy enlisting.

  • i am speechless

  • Great video.

And some people commenting need to stop being so naive and believing anything a politician says.

  • @cubanitaa

bravo! yes they need to stop believing the politicians and the media. turn off their television sets and tune into one another. :)

  • END THE ZIONIST CONTROL OF OUR MEDIA AND STOP THE WARS!!!!

  • This is a great video....but where is O-bomb-A? He promised to get us out...yeah and we believed him??? NOT!

  • @guitarland The only candidate to strongly say, "Out of Iraq now" and mean it was Ron Paul. I heard Obama promise to re-deploy the troops into Afganistan where he could catch Osama and the taliban,so there was no way I was going to vote for that SOB. Great song, Peace.

  • @lexrex3 Kucinich was pushing for a withdrawl but they were two lonely voices. I agree with you on Obama. call me a veteran for Peace Now...not ten years down the road.

  • @lexrex3 I agree with a lot of Ron Paul's policies, however, the one that I cannot abide is the "We the People" act which would allow state and local governments to ban atheists/non-believers from public office. The idea that you HAVE to be religious in order to represent the people is absurd to say the least.

  • @lexrex3 ....um well osamas kinda dead

  • @lexrex3 I also specifically remember him saying he would begin removing troops from Iraq his first day in office. Yeah......that sure happened.

  • From germany, end the wars, and fuck off USA

  • BRILLIANT BRILLIANT

  • When I first heard this in the '80's, I didn't think much of it--just ranting about politics. I've since learned how deep it goes. Everyone, search the meaning of the word EUGENICS! Everything will make sense then.

  • Lives in the Balance is the eighth album by American singer/songwriter Jackson Browne, released in 1986 and even though it's an old song but this song can be in today what is going over in IRAQ we need our Troops to come home

  • Good Song!!!!

  • Stop The Wars!

I will add it to my website

    LibertyPoet

and also post it on DailyPaul

  • " I want to here someone asking them why they can be counted on to tell us who our enemies are, but they are never the ones to fight or to die"

  • i have grown up with a lot of different styles of music and it takes a lot for a song to give me chills but i must say this one did...

  • Many times I have wondered if man is capable of waking up and learning from past mistakes...

and as we continue to make the same mistakes over and over again...

I realise just how stupid we humans really are !

We haven't learnt from two World Wars... We didn't learn from the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki... We didn't learn from Afghanistan or Iraq...

    We won't learn from Iran...

Perhaps 'the most powerful song' ever written... and we won't even learn from that !

    Peace !!!

  • when will we learn...when will we get informed...when will we take Our Country back?

  • very powerful with the pictures. this is so tragic. war! death! its happening over there for so long now. please lets stop!

  • nothing changes!!!

  • It is miserable and true that the US of A are war mongers ...... I was born here and raised in NYC area .... I am in disgrace and abhor the entire country these years of the Bush regime's atrocities .... and those that continue due to the strength and money of those who want war, chaos and to control the rest of us .... we need to stay awake .......

  • Some may say people fight for water, money, oil and many other things. Everything that people need to get more power or to survive is the goal for survivour these days.

    I say: Share and care

People don't know those things because you can be drowned with empty words and those words can build you up and kill other to get what things that is important for the high persons that wants it.

  • "Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity." ~ General George S. Patton

  • @tommerrigan1956 If you screw often enough, and in the proper way, you might not be a virginal person. But you will create new virgins.

  • Every generation believes they can make the world a better place. I know my generation thought we would win the world over with love. All our dreams just backfired in our face. I've lost hope.

  • james blunt is a pretender jackson did it first, nobody listend, sept me. check lives in the ballance ... but this time, listen, or are you all deaf

  • Only recently i had the pleasure to "discover" this singer. Now I'm listening to all his songs that I find. I enjoyed this song in special because of the subject. War sucks and in special ones caused by greed.

  • All we need is love..

Wars are started by politicians,, fought by our sons and daughters,, for the greed and arrogance of the few.

Excellent song and slideshow.. thank you.

  • This song will tear your heart out, and PLEASE dont take it as anti-military. Its not. Its anti war.

  • im irish. we spent 30 years blow ing the shit out of each other for 30 years, until we learned to talk to each other ......... hello real world

  • Excellent. Was a powerful song before I saw this video. Now it's even stronger! Love Jackson.

  • Great

  • This song was originally released in 1986 and I believe it was directed at the war being waged at that time in Central America. In terms of its relevance in the last ten years, it seems pretty clear that the current war in Iraq was "sold to us" by politicians and "elite" neo-cons who "sold" it to the President.

  • So many forget that we were attack on 9/11. Now to keep our country safe we must from now on carry the fight to them. None of you have ever experienced war but if we let them, they will be here. And once they are attacking your schools, our fresh water supply, and where our power is made (from the plans we have uncovered) people often have big change of mind. Its ok as long as its somewhere else, well it if we stop will it be here..

  • welcome to the New World Order; run by some of the wealthiest and some of the smartest people in the world. Evil crept upon us while we slept. For you who are awaking from your long slumber the only thing we have to fight with..is love..and that just ain't enough.

  • @Starpass Yep, and the worst part is that they pretend to care. I am sickened by the sight of people who rally together for unions, civil rights leaders, liberal candidates that promise entitlement programs because they are totally tools that are no more than a vote or part of a power agenda for those they follow.

People need to stand united but not give up our freedom by allowing government to control our lives.

  • great song, great video. Browne is one of the best songwriters of our time. Still relevant 30 years later this song is timeless and powerful.

  • we you me and every 1 else who hears this

has a duty to make all the youngsters and oldsters to listen to this tune just once.

i went to gulf war 1991. i volunteered. naive? patriot? eeejit?

    regardless.

i did my thing,no regrets kinda. i got poisoned by innoculations. hows that for a lasting souvenier. i Didnt die cos i wasnt trained to die. And that has pissed off lots of people. cowards lackys and whores to the establishment.

all you need to do is listen to the words in this tune. WiL

  • its not the way it is on the OST. but listen to the words.

  • One of the best protest songs EVER.....Period. Thank you Jackson for signing out loud the truth about our country.

  • I think it's incredible to consider that this record was released in 1986 and is still completely relevant today; and unfortunately always will be.

  • This song was used in an episode of "Miami Vice" entitled "Stone's War." The episode involved the coverup of murders perpetrated by foreign soldiers whom the USA was supporting. The same argument can very easily be applied to the Bush administration as seen in the video. The "shadow on the faces" line made me think of Cheney before I saw the video, and when I ended up seeing it I was amused. Excellent video.

  • This was one of the most brilliant, finest political protest songs of all time. I admire Jackson Browne for moving in that direction when he did.

  • Oh he was right on about the 80s. The same crap is still going on now. He even saw something like 911 coming. We reaped what we have sown. America's support of Israel is a mistake. We could feed the Middle East with the billions we send them.

  • he left his personal devestation of the 70's only to write about his feelings of the devestatin of the 80's. he was correct about his 70's perceptions, but wrong about the 80's

  • I'm sorry but Jackson Browne is an excellent artist (I've seen him in concert in the 70"s) and has a lot of good political views that only 1 song has ever helped change the world. And that was not by Jackson Browne. Try U2 and the end of apartheid.

  • This song and album were released in February 1986. Amazingly powerful song whose lyrics still have an tremendous message.

  • 'These are some of the most powerful comments I have ever heard. Powered by a powerful song.

  • you're right man,you guys liberated us here in Europe from the nazi's

  • exactly! those fucking koreans, irakis, (insert your favourite third world country here) and afghanis would have killed every american by now!!! With their advanced weaponry!!!!

Robert, you're a fucking idiot and a piece of shit on top...

  • Normally, I ignore flaming trolls like you and I will ignore you from now on, but I had to mock you for your poor spelling, grammar, and general stupidity. Since you do not watch the news, North Korea does now have nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons that are a threat to all of Asia and eventually to the USA. You do not understand at all the Cold War or how Korea is the traditional invasion from China route to Japan. You have no knowledge of the danger of Islamic Jihad, so you ignore it

  • Assuming stuff about other people is a dangerous thing, my fat, american virgin-friend...

We'll talk again when you speak perfect German then, you ignorant piece of shit.

  • Support the American War Machine!!! (not)

  • @kcdrew69 unfortunately some "sheeps" cant understad it.

  • @MelekBetul

holy cow, dude. it's for all the people lost in the war--all the ones who died and were killed that I said anything. Unfortunately, you didn't get that. I'm speaking up for them.

  • @kcdrew69 How many family members have you had die in war? Fuck you pussy!

  • @jcowell1977

dude--it's for any and all that were lost--killed--in the war that I'm speaking up, that I'm speaking of. I'm sticking up for them. Sorry you didn't get that.

  • This video hits it on the nail. What is this world coming to.? Why can't we keep our nose in our own business? Keep our soldiers here in the usa and not in foreign countries. We have enough problems here in the USA!

  • Well, unfortunately, we can't keep our soldiers out of foreign countries because the alternative is responsible energy consumption.

  • Basically, it's because we are a democracy. Democracy allows all the people in society to project their emotional insecurities through a collective war fantasy. The compulsory nature of the U.S. state system, particularly taxation, makes it economically viable for large scale wars to occur, whereas, in the absence of the state, war would be disincentive (it's too expensive without taxation)

  • @squakingcrow1 when people fly planes into our cities we have a right to defend our selves, ie Afghanistan. Iraq WAS not a "just" war.

  • @psycowitz91 Ya know, there will NEVER be peace in the mid-east. Thats what the bible says anyway and I really believe it. They fight amid them selves and kill their own..... And all we are doing is giving them others to kill. Life, is NOT a value to them, as seen in the suicide bombings we have experienced ourselves. I respect our guys and girls that are fighting for our freedom but I think its another vietnam Atleast this war our soldiers get some kuddo's as they didnt in the Nam era.

  • @squakingcrow1 Yeah next time theres a 09-11 lets ignore it, saying we deserved it.

  • @captainamerica1967us Last verse of this song tells it all. respectfully, DABIGRAGU1 (AirForce '01-'06) "They sell us the President the same way They sell us our clothes and our cars They sell us every thing from youth to religion The same time they sell us our wars I want to know who the men in the shadows are I want to hear somebody asking them why They can be counted on to tell us who our enemies are But they’re never the ones to fight or to die And there are lives in the balance"
