Homeless people can take showers in most major cities for free. My shelter gives out free towels, soap and other hygiene products for a basic form of ID (not just a license). I find that it's mostly the seriously mentally ill who let themselves get to the point of no return, rather than the typical homeless person. If they smell that bad, perhaps you should try to get them help.

oh i can stand it. that's for sure. i'm mostly on the fining side because, well let's face it those guys stink for a reason. SOMEBODY'S gotta get on their case since their parents failed at teaching that. and saying "holy crap! you stink! go for a shower or something, sir/ma'am" will end up in some kind of unwanted confrontations

Well they have to find a different way of doing that,they do teach hygeine in schools now,so that's good,but if someone smells u can't just put them in jail or fine them it's the same thing as putting somone in jail for not following the current fashion trends and wearing something from the 60's.

Ya there's some smelly people here but they stay close to Waikiki and are not riding the bus. On east side big island if you sit still to long you will grow mold. No shit. Now add that to dreadlocks and people who pride themselves on not showering. Which might explain why the bus is free there.

Smell is subjective, I run into women every day that use to much perfume and its worse than people that have worked for a day and might have a little body odor I think they should add perfume to the list, too much and you go to jail...LOL

I was on a crowded bus recently and this guy got on and sat about 2 seats away from me, and his reek was so foul I about threw up right there on the bus. I freaking had to hold my breath the rest of the way.
The bus is a company and companies can deny service at their discretion. Dude, you have to get off the bus, you go to a YMCA and take a shower and you can ride the bus again.
I mean it was like rotten underwear and crotch juice that had fermented for 2 months. Yes, kick him off.

i'm living in honolulu now and this is a poorly thought-out law for a problem we have: we have some homeless people with health problems, incontinence, skin conditions etc, and they use the bus. really what we should be doing is setting up more shelters and public showers, but we have this idiot from the more affluent districts whose kids take the bus, who thought of this dumb idea. it's not really under consideration- it was shot down by everyone else almost immediately.

Hawaii's main economic input is from tourists - the main users of public transportation. No matter whether you believe this move is wrong, you have to understand that very very few tourists come to honolulu to be attacked by smelly people. this move is to protect the economic input of the state.
also, if you've ever been on public transportation in Honolulu, you WOULD know what "smelly" means. Not B.O. - its pukey, trashy, vomit, and shit smelly. B.O. only offends a few people - doesn't count.
