  • never mind I could not take that digitizer anymore so I went ahead an swapped it out...works fine adhesive is not necessary

  • so tell me this what can I expect if I don't use the adhesive as suggested because my cracked digitizer it's making my phone go bananas...I have all my parts just my adhesive is set to be received towards the end of March...I wanna change it now and add the adhesive later one it arrives is this a bad idea?

  • HTC Merge Repair screen tutorial ??

  • @TRANFOR94 One should be uploaded shortly. Within the next 24 hours.

  • @RepairUniverse where do I get the adhesive?

  • @jawgastyle Adhesive strips can be found at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.

  • My glass screen cracked and now only shows pretty colored lines when powered. Does the digitizer include the glass? Or what do I need to get the glass and the screen? Thanks!!

  • @atvguy1964 If the outer glass is cracked you will need a replacement glass touch screen digitizer. If the display is also damaged (discoloration), then the LCD screen will also need to be replaced. Both the touch screen digitizer and LCD screens are available at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.

  • I understand that there are two different size ribbons a thick one and a smaller one when it comes to Digitizer replacements. How do I know which one i need when i have to replace my broken screen??? Thanks in advance!

  • @blackdustsixtysix Touch screen cables are the same, it is the LCD screen you are thinking of - one wide flex and the normal flex. The touch screens are the same for all Evo 4G models (wide and regular).

  • @RepairsUniverse If I am understanding you correctly that all the touch screens are the same then how do i know whether i should get a wide flex or normal flex ribbon for the replacement LCD?

  • @blackdustsixtysix Sadly no reliable method is known to us besides physically measuring the size of the flex cable itself. The exact measurements can be found at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.

  • @RepairsUniverse That is unfortunate. You've been very helpful. Thanks!

  • @blackdustsixtysix Yes, it is a bit of a pain. But every other method we have tried has been very inconsistent.

No problem at all, let us know if you have any further questions.

  • @RepairsUniverse Actually, I do have an additional question. Is getting new adhesive necessary for this repair?

  • @blackdustsixtysix It is highly suggested if replacing the touch screen digitizer. If only replacing the LCD screen it is normally not required, but suggested, just to be sure you can seat the screen properly.

  • do you know which ribbon cable is the digitizer?

  • @BYDFS1996 The touch screen digitize flex cable can be seen at 2:30 in the video.

  • Did everything exactly as shown. and everything went together perfectly. Now when I turn on the phone I get a quick vibrate like it is turning on and thats it. Does not turn on at all. If I take out the battery and then put it back in i get the quick vibrate when turning on and thats it.Any thoughts. Phone just had cracked glass but was working fine before i changed the glass. Redid all connections twice as well.

  • @lookwithus Possible the LCD screen was damaged during the repair. You can try calling the phone while it sounds "powered on", just to see if it is the display that is not functioning, or if the whole device is not staying on.

  • Awesome Video! Got my horribly cracked screen replaced in less than 30 min. Looks good as new!

  • @falesk Great work! Glad the video could help.

  • what if your screen is shattered, how do you take it out???

  • @kwaidonjin You will need to follow this video to remove the old touch screen digitizer and replace it. Replacement screens for the Evo 4G can be found at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.

  • Just replaced my touch screen today! My phone is back to normal

  • @MrFootball1234 Great job on your repair!

  • I did everything and I have a blank screen, what do I do

  • @tosmooth6 I would suggest taking a look at the connection from the LCD screen to the motherboard. If that appears fine, I would check the LCD screen itself for damage or a ripped flex cable.

  • What does it mean when I turn the phone back on and all i get is a white screen. It's lit up and all, and I can hear the sounds of the phone booting up and text messages received but still all I get is a white screen?

  • @blilley2190 It would depend. What is the history of the device, water damage, replaced LCD screen, etc? Normally this would indicate either a bad connection from the LCD screen to the motherboard or the LCD screen has been damaged.

  • @RepairsUniverse -- no water damage or anything along those lines, I replaced the screen digitizer (as in your video). I put everything back together and turned it on and still received a white screen. Would fingerprints on any of the ribbons be an issue?

  • @blilley2190 I see. Fingerprints? Not at all. If layers of the LCD were peeled back during the replacement of the touch screen, that can cause the issue. A rip in the cable or loose connection can also cause the same issue as well.

  • @RepairsUniverse does the tape that was covering the ribbons need to be put back over them when reassembling?

  • @blilley2190 The tape is not totally necessary, as long as a good connection is made. It is useful to be sure the connection stays in place during the rest of reassembly though.

  • after i put i put my new screen on and the phone back together all i get when i turn it on is a black screen but the lights that are around the screen turn on and the phone appears like it is on but no picture appears on the screen could you help.?

  • @PanicR3AP3R Normally this is either caused by a bad LCD connection, or damage to the LCD screen itself. I would suggest disassembling to the motherboard and checking the LCD connection for either a loose connection or damage.

  • @PanicR3AP3R make sure that the ribbon cable is all the way into the slot and put all your srews back in place make sure everything is tight, it happend to me too and thats all i kept doing and finally it worked.

  • My screen was shattered from the top left corner about halfway down the screen. I put scotch tape over all of the cracks so the glass would stay -somewhat- intact when trying to remove the screen. It took a long time. Probably close to 20-30 minutes to remove the shattered glass. I actually used my fingernail to go around everywhere that wasn't shattered first and then used a thin guitar pick to hold it apart while I worked with the shattered part. Just be patient, it will come off!

  • @MDJBK Great advice. With cracked glass you must be patient.

  • whats wrong with my digitizer? theres like one spot across the screen thats unresponsive but when i turn it sideways to use the keyboard when i press a letter thats on that line it presses another one as if its un calibrated and also the digitizer can be pushed in a little bit is it loose?

  • @G10DB What normally happens is that the touch screen digitizer will come in contact with the LCD screen, making the screen think another button is being pressed. I would suggest re-seating the digitizer with new adhesive that gives the touch screen proper lift from the LCD screen.

  • Caution people! Adhesive was super strong. My LCD is history as well after struggling with the digitizer adhesive. Be extra careful popping the screen out. Heating the screen adhesive may have helped. Back up all your information before you try this repair.

  • How can I tell if my HTC EVO is a wide flex pin or narrow pin without taking it apart? Thanks

  • @achmephoneleads Sadly we have not found a reliable method of determining the LCD flex cable version. The only sure way is to physically measure it.

  • Nice video but just to help you and everyone out there when prying apart the screen from the LCD take a heat gun or hair dryer on low setting to the front for about 15 seconds this gets the adhesive softer to work with so you don't risk the chance of doing more damage to the phone then what is already done. It splits apart a lot easier.

  • @joes6autos Great addition. Thank you. Just be sure not too heat the LCD screen too much, as it can be damaged. Always better to reheat multiple times if needed.

  • im not sure if this is the right tutorial or not, but i want to confirm it. I dropped my phone a few times and my htc evo shift 4g touch input isnt working even when took the battery out and put it back in and turned it on. do you guys have the part i need specifically for my phone on the site, because sometimes people get the evo and the evo shift mixed up

  • @XxMangaNerdxX This tutorial is for the Evo 4G. We do have a full take apart guide for the Evo Shift, as well as all the parts required. The video can be found in our channel. The replacement parts and screens can be found at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.

  • The "little bit of adhesive" proved to be a ton of adhesive. I went nice and slow and CRACK, now not only do I have to replace the digitizer, but the actual LCD screen is FUBAR. When the digitizer cracked it took out the lcd behind it. Now, where's the video to replace both? and parts?

  • @n8daniel Sorry to hear about that. Normally this can be done without heat, however it is helpful at times to loosen the adhesive a bit. We do have a video up for the LCD screen replacement as well. Parts can be found at RepairsUniverse (dot) com. Take note that there are two types of LCD screens - Wide flex and normal flex.

  • Was going great until the "a bit of adhesive" part for removing the glass digitizer. My 4G had the glass cemented all around the edges with a lot of adhesive and prying it off took a knife rather than a plastic pry tool. Otherwise, great tutorial. Thanks.

  • @Sleestakistan Glad to hear you were able to remove it. Heat works great to soften the adhesive, you can then use a plastic pry tool with a bit more ease. No problem at all!

  • @Sleestakistan OK, so I just saw the written instructions on Repair Universe, and they say to use a hair dryer to loosen the adhesive prior to prying off the glass. That would have been a nice bit of info to have before I did this. If it's in your video, I just missed it I guess.

  • Thanks for posting. I have lots of dust under my glass (including the top left corner that seems to be common) and this looks like a good way to get in there and clean it out.

  • @Surannhealz No problem at all. This is the safest way to remove the digitizer and clean it up. Good luck!

  • Hey, how can I find out which screen my HTC Evo 4G takes? Is the flex strip narrow or wide?

  • @Djmerclis If you remove the back cover from the EVO you can check the width of the flex. This is the easiest way to be 100% you order the correct replacement screen. We have both screen replacements at RepairsUniverse (dot) com

  • Hey, how do I know if my HTC Evo 4G has a narrow or wide flex cable? How can you tell?

  • How do i figure out what HTC EVO 4g model I have? it says PC36100 is that the right number?

  • @Greyfox404 There is only one type of EVO 4G.

  • Thankyou!!! Though I would suggest making a video with an already broken one because getting my cracked all over digitizer off took 10 more minutes not to mention thinking i was completely destroying the phone with the sounds while prying it off. There was probably a much easier way.

  • @dixielilys Removing a cracked touch screen is a bit of a pain, but there is not secret to remove them. Just time, patients, and sometimes heat. In fact, 10 minutes is not too bad for removing a severely cracked screen. Thank you for your input and we will attempt to do more videos with damaged screens.

  • do they make more than one evo screen with different size ribbon cables.

  • @ventricle1 The Evo 4G only has one size glass touch screen digitizer flex cable. There are other Evo models however which use different sized flex cables, including the Evo Shift. The LCD screen on the Evo 4G does have 2 different sized flex cables.

  • I broke my touch screen digitizer. I purchsed another one. What type of adhesive should I use when I install the digitizer?

  • @theRAGECOACH We suggest the adhesive available at RepairsUniverse (dot) com. We have used this for many years and has never failed.

  • mt HTC EVO 4g has its screen crack... What do I need to replace?

I know it sounds stupid but really, do I have just buy the glass cover or something else?

  • @Greyfox404 If the image behind the glass is fine (this is the LCD screen) then you will only need to replace the glass touch screen digitizer. This is just a glass cover with touch sensors fused onto it. These can be found at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.

  • @RepairsUniverse

The plastic around the glass screen also badly damaged.

  • @Greyfox404 This is the front bezel touch screen housing. It is part of the main housing that is pretty simple to replace. These are also available at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.

  • So i just purchased a scrren nd the lcd screen.... is it suppose to have small flex cables?

  • @Just2Cut3Tany Yes, the LCD screen especially has a very small, stubby flex cable.

  • What happens if one of the jaw press things breaks?

  • @TheCatracho908 It will depend on where the break is and if the connector is still usable/reliable. If it is a jaw connector on the motherboard and you cannot get a good connection then a motherboard replacement would be needed.

  • THANKS SO MUCH. I could have figured it out but i did not want to mess it up seeing as its an expensive phone. THANK YOU!!!

  • @artie2099 No problem at all!

  • Can i used an t5 torx?

  • @Just2Cut3Tany Yes, the Evo 4G uses T5 Torx screws. Stating it was a T4 was an error in the video. However, depending on the quality of the screwdriver, sometimes T4's can be used without stripping.

  • ok so i used on of ur guys videos about a yr ago to fix the headphone jack on my ipod and it worked great now im back again because i stepped on my phone n broke the screen i just ordered my parts but what i gotta ask is after u take out the broken screen do u need to buy more adhesive or can u use something else???

  • @courtneywrol123 Yes, we always suggest new adhesive, it makes for a better seal. You can attempt to reuse the old adhesive but it usually makes for a sloppy repair. If you are looking for good adhesive, check out the adhesive at RepairsUniverse (dot) com. We have used it for years without any complaint.

  • not as simple as it looks to remove the screen when its cracked. i cracked my housing a little but other than that awesome!

  • @debora5647 More heat may have made this easier. Warming it correctly and adding constant heat makes it quite simple in most cases. Sometimes VERY cracked screens can be a bit tedious but it is the the same process. Glad to hear the rest of your repair went smoothly.

  • Ok so I followed all the instructions, I put it all back together and now the screen isn't lighting up at all. It's vibrating when it's turning on and I can see the notification light etc. Just no screen :( What should I look for?

  • @qpidsangel Normally this is just a connection issue. I would suggest making sure the LCD flex cable and connection are secure and not damaged. Check for small rips on the flex cable, etc. If it appears to be fully in place and still no display, contact the merchant for more detailed troubleshooting.

  • @qpidsangel hey did you find a way to fix your backlighting on ur evo 4g mine is the same

  • I just cracked the glass on my phone. I was looking up replacement parts. Is there only one model of replacement glass/ digitizer?

  • @emgizzy Yes. Just one version of touch screen digitizer for the Evo 4G so you don't have to worry about compatibility or versions. We have this replacement part at RepairsUniverse (dot) com

  • is there a way to tell which part you need?

  • @emgizzy Yes, what is the issue with your phone?

  • Instructions were excellent, but digitizer is much harder to remove from adhesive than it looks. make sure you buy a quality pry tool. I cracked my old digitizer and ruined my cheap piece of crap pry tool during removal. Otherwise clear cut instructions. Thanks ;)

  • What about re-installation? Like putting the ribbon cables back in. Also the little plastic buttons attached to the bottom of the screen. They have to be moved to the new one. Any suggestions?

  • @vision239 To feed the cable through, line it up correctly and SLOWLY feed it fully through. Be sure not to twist or put too much pressure on the cable. As for the buttons, they have small elastic loops that snap over parts of the housing. Take mental notes of everything you remove and how it is removed because it is installed the exact same way.

  • issues with the glass removal...any suggestions????

  • @DaSouf79 Removing the touch screen from the housing assembly? Be sure it is heated very well and get in there with a pry tool (plastic preferably). May be required to reheat a few times, just take your time with it.

  • what about heating the digi to remove it from the lcd with out braking the lcd???

  • @gdlkb123 Yes, that works great, also helps with a shattered screen. You can do it as shown in the video in most cases, just don't put too much pressure on the LCD screen. Heating may work better for you, just don't use too much. Quick movements.

  • shatter the screen into a million tiny pieces then show me how to replace THAT :(

  • @NCQueen09 Takes a bit more time, patients, and a steady hand. The procedure is identical however.

  • Thank you very helpfull video!

  • @BennyBlancs1 No problem at all, glad you found the video useful!

  • Thanks for this video it helped a lot. Wish I had clean area to work with though, since i think some dirt got in there.

  • @DoctorDoubleX No problem at all. Yeah its always best to stay clean and organized to avoid having to do it twice because of dust or dirt.

  • is the screws torx? and wat size? thanks

  • @keithryan1025 Yes, it is a Torx T-5.

  • @RepairsUniverse Thank you i just got done and because my safe pry tool broke it was really difficult i ended up prying the adhesive up i think someone did this before me because first there was a screw missing and the adhesive isnt like whats shown here thanks again!

  • @keithryan1025 No problem. Yeah, sounds like someone had disassembled before, but that can make it easier at times.

  • @RepairsUniverse In the video you say T4 which is it?

  • @jaden1592 In the video we made an error, the correct Torx is the T-5.

  • great review

  • @ktownanthem Thank you, glad you found the video useful!

  • what about if my MAIN screen broke, not the one you removed in the video but the one that lights up? how can i replace that?

  • @lilpecky540 You are referring to the LCD screen, that video can be found in out channel and the replacement part can be found at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.

  • Question: any advice to remove a screen / glass that is very heavily cracked? (20-30 cracks) great info and parts btw.

  • @honkbob Patients is key. Tweezers can help with that as well. It is a slow, tedious process. Best of luck, and glad the guide helped!

  • @honkbob Put packing tape over the screen to hold the glass shards and use a flat-edged exacto blade to pry near the speaker grill and move outwards. Being gentle to pry it up, you'll find a thick piece of plastic (digitizer) under the glass only a little larger than the physical LCD size. Once you reach this piece of plastic, use it to carefully pull the rest of your glass up. Be sure to use a little bit of heat to soften the adhesive. Once off, carefully remove remaining fragments of glass.

  • hey thanks a lot my phone is back to normal.....

  • @arktx360 No problem, Glad the video helped!

  • wait where do u get the new screen from and how much is it

  • @weirdgirl2345 You can find these at RepairsUniverse (dot) com

  • Awesome - just replaced the Digitizer and Speaker in one swoop. Great info, great parts! Thanks!

  • @JoeWojoJoeWojo No problem, glad we could help!!

  • @RepairsUniverse I have a very tiny horizontal 'dead' zone on my phone. It's not crippling, but sometimes it is a pain when I go to 'touch' things, but I can't. Could this be an issue with the ribbon not being seated 100% correctly?

  • Comment removed

  • @JoeWojoJoeWojo I have a screenshot of a drawing app illustrating the dead zone if you would like.

  • @JoeWojoJoeWojo Yes, I would double check the connection and check for damages to the flex (tiny rips?).

  • My phone looks so much better now... That black tape was little tough but I manage it, it broke off but its so sticky it glued right back on it...

Thanks from Brazil mate... Very helpfull video...

I appreciate you take the time to make and post this video... Thank you again.

  • @Mr18doug Happy we could help!

  • i ordered the replacements and followed the instructions and still have a black screen. and now the screws are wont turn anymore.

  • @cuntryblk Sounds like a connection issue. Are the screws stripped? You will either need to use a screw extractor to remove the screw, or use a small drill bit to drill out the screw and remove. These are your two easiest options.

  • @ThEEJohnnyBoyy Thank you, glad they helped!

  • how do you know which is the correct digitizer for the Evo. my screen comes on but the buttons on the bottom of the screen arent responsive.

  • @WHYSOSERIOUSIST - There is only one version of the touch screen on the Evo. It is possible the connection is not fully in place. This is the most common issue. If the cable is in place and inspected for damage, then it is possible it is a faulty digitizer.

  • you can carefully pull off the old black adhesive strip from the old glass and apply it to the new one. its tricky cause it gets all curled up on you but its strong and doesn't tear easy and its sticky enough to be used again. worked fine on my evo. just be sure to get all the glass pieces off of it.

  • @vinnysf Yes you can sometimes use the old adhesive, but can be a hassle. This is why we suggest getting new adhesive strips you can cut properly to size. This gives it the best "seat" possible.

  • I have sound and no display also. Which ribbon is the one that may be the issue? Top left, middle left, or bottom?

  • @cuteemmerz It will be the LCD flex ribbon. Check the connection and be sure it is completely in place.

  • @cuteemmerz i have the same problem.. did everything like 10 times and still my screen is black..everything else works ..im getting calls and messages but no pictures.. i followed everything step by step and it went smoothly .. i dont know what happened

  • @strtslpr What happened with me is glass had shattered so much that while removing the glass I ruined the LCD, and the prong it goes into on the motherboard was bent. My advice is be very careful while doing this. My $10 screen costed me a board and a LCD, but it was due to me not being careful enough and handling my phone delicately. Make sure all the flex ribbons are in place and nothing is bent on your motherboard.

  • After putting phone back together, all I get is sound. Screen is black.

  • @eschones This is simply a connection issue. Make sure the ribbon cable for the LCD is fully inserted and you will get the image back like before.

  • Nice video. Is there adhesive or some sort of chassis holding the screen onto the body? Just wondering because I bought a screen once for my old iPhone, and it didn't have the chassis which I then realized I had to buy a screen with the chassis attached.

  • @nimbuskid Yes, the touch screen is attached to the "front bezel touch screen housing" using adhesive. You can remove the touch screen easily from the housing (assuming the housing was not damaged as well) and attach your new touch screen with no issue. You must use adhesive to hold the screen in place however. You can find this and other Evo replacement parts at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.

  • Comment removed

  • Hi - thanks for the video. I went through this process, turned the phone on, and the screen is just bright white. No image??? Any thoughts on where I screwed up?

  • @slem311 Could be a few things. First i would check the LCD screens flex ribbon cable and connection, the smallest thing can cause some major issues like white screen. Another possibility is the LCD screen itself is faulty, which is possible, but more likely that a ribbon is damaged or the connection is off. Only way to tell is to open your Evo back up. Good luck!

  • Hi, I just want to say THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!. Not only did I fix my cracked screen, I'm buying an EVO with a broken screen, so I can fix one for my g/f. Your video explained exactly what I needed to know to make the repair and my phone works as good as new.

  • @jgunslingerj No problem! Glad we could help. That is a great way to get a phone cheap, especially when you are comfortable with the repair. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the video, it allowed me to do this myself. One thing though, the top art of the digitizer seems to be dead... like where the notification area is. I can't pull down the notification bar anymore. Could this be a bad connection of the ribbon, or could it actually be a fault of the digitizer itself? Otherwise it seems accurate and working perfectly.

  • @MrS4t0V No problem! Sounds like it could be a connection issue, double check it, also carefully examine the flex cable and make sure there are no issues with it, especially because the Evo's is so long. If the flex and connection is good, it could be a faulty digitizer. Good luck!

  • @RepairsUniverse Check my video response. I did examine the cable, that was what I was hoping the problem was, but no dice. I ran a test using the dev tools included in the CM7 ROM and it gives a good demonstration of what's going on with the digitizer.

  • Thanx it really helped

  • @MrWil99 No Problem! Glad you found our video helpful!

  • Do you need a T4 or T5 Torx screw driver to remove the screws on an HTC EVO 4G?

  • @bradams6 You need a T5 Torx. We have these at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.

Sorry for the error in the video.

  • do you have to take off the volume button, power button, front camera, and the three ribbons if your only replacing the glass screen?

  • @malfavonvictor93 Yes. You have to do it as shown in the video.

  • Thanks I found it....i apoloqize for asking so many questions but just wanna be accurate about everything...so once I cut the adhesive juss simply and it'll stay? And where exactly should I apply

  • @Chocolateboy347 Yes, just put adhesive along the black areas of the digitizer. Pretty much just put it where the old adhesive was.

  • Okay...thanks for the response but I just need the adhesive not the screen too...is it a way possibly I can buy it without having to get both

  • @Chocolateboy347 Yes. We have the strips in the tools section on the site.

  • Is adhesive something you must have in order to repair

  • @Chocolateboy347 We sell the adhesive strips with the screens at RepairsUniverse (dot) com. It is something we recommend to do the repair.

  • I got the screw driver but it only takes out one of the screws. the rest tend to slide is there anything i can do

  • @reaper456 You need a T5 Torx screwdriver. They should then all come out without issue.

  • How does the Digitizer connect to the phone? I bought the digitizer and lcd screen and I plan on buying the screen housing as mine is a bit chipped up from not using a safe pry tool(have one now). Does the housing have an adhesive holding the digitizer in?. Mine seems to fall off quite easily with the old housing. Also do you have more of the torque 5 screws and the Philips screw for sale? Looking for original parts so I still am in warranty.

    Thank you!

  • @CrossStealth Hi,

Yes. We have all these parts and tools.

The digitizer connects to the phone via a jaw connector. Simply insert the cable and close the jaw connector to hold the ribbon in place.

The housing has adhesive to hold the digitizer in place.

You can find the housing, digitizer and tools at RepairsUniverse (dot) com

  • i would like to know how to replace the screen. do you need glue or tape to replace it?

  • @MrGerardoVega We recommend using the adhesive strips available in the "Repair Tools" section on the RepairsUniverse (dot) com website. These are the correct thickness for the EVO.

  • thanks, this helped me take apart my evo.

quick question though. my touch screen is cracked, so i know i have to replace that.

my lcd screen has horizontal static lines going up and down screen. do i need to replace my lcd screen as well or is there other problems with the phone? i got it from a friend who dropped it pretty damn good.

  • @vienmhoang Yes, it sounds like both your touch screen digitizer and LCD screen are damaged.
