@ralfieralf The reason why the keys are needed is because you enter a loading zone when you enter the room, which takes you to a different part of the castle. With the star doors, you don't go into a loading zone. Both rooms are part of the same "map".

There are several other ways to get it faster though. The fastest run is 43 seconds faster than this.

No, but close. A "Tool-Assisting" program lets you play the game in save states. If you messed something up, you can delete where your at and go back to the last saved point. So you just keep doing things over and over until you get things right.

Now way to skip the first or second battles? Looks like this is where the record will sit unless someone wastes their time to save a frame or two somewhere. It become a was day when there is no true room for improvement. Now a 16 star run could be optimized. I think you could get 11 stars upstairs, then bowser, then 3 downstairs. But that would be difficult to see if any time was saved. I see chomp, then whomp, floating cage, top of tower, penguin, tiered star on the ice, and a few other ideas.

All the input were done by Swordless and AKA while using an emulator with tools to assist them. Which is a huge difference to using a bot.
