The lack of recoil must be due to the extremely heavy nature of this weapon.

The rounds simply do not exert enough rearward force to start all that metal moving.

If he had to carry that old bastard too far that strap would be working on his shoulder like it was a wire saw.

He is not a dumb ass. The gun was used like that by stormtroopers in 1917/18. Yes I know stormtroopers are from star wars. But, the Germans had real ones in both ww1 and 2. This type is also very unusual in that it feeds from the right to the left. That was done to make it simpler to use solo. Almost all gpmgs feed the other way round. I have only ever seen a Stoner set up to feed right to the left like this in modern gun types.

Pretty cool video! This is an MG08/15, with the 100 round drum, and yes, you were supposed to be able to fire it like this, but it is difficult, as you see. The gun is heavy, 39 lbs or so, but the recoil is no big deal, because it's all taken up working the system. I was trying to figure out why he was pulling the belt through, but then I saw it's a metal surplus schwarzlose belt, these work much better with the cloth type belts than metal. Neat video!!!

Note he has a water jacket. Recoil is proportional to the ratio of the weight of the bullet to the weight of the weapon. With the full water jacket the08/15, aka the devil's paint brush has manageable recoil, but heavy weight. He would n't be able to handle it without the strap..

Given what a total pig the Maxim is (ONLY 39 lbs or so) and how slowly it fires in the grand scale of machine guns, I can believe that pretty easy. The damn thing would eat up practically all the recoil force on its bulkiness alone.

It WAS used in WW1 as a 'light' mg. This is definitely the MG 08/15 w/ 50-rd belt. It weighs 39 lb. Some were probably in ww2 I KNOW that the HEAVY version was used in pillboxes.
