I still laugh when people here something progressive and automatically compare it to Iron Maiden. Firstly, Maiden generally use diatonic modes, and never classical scales.Their songs are never really fast, and they almost never use riff's. just very typically spaced-out predictable basic chord progression's (usually C-D-E ,ala Manowar) which is why it is so easy for the bass and vocals to really let loose.
