The best "Australian" folk songs are the ones written by immigrants like Eric Bogle and the late Alistair Hulett. All the stuff about sheep, while it may be very merry, is just not relevant to modern day Australia.

Folksongs are songs from yesterday, and we sing them because of that. Whether they have relevance today doesn't matter.

@OzPix I disagree strongly. I think real folk songs survive the test of time because they stay relevant. They touch on something permanent about the human condition.

Take "The Black Velvet Band". It's about the harshness of justice, and people being lead on by members of the opposite sex. None of that has changed since in the centuries since it was first sung.
