Tryng to 'please' other people. It can cripple you, if your motivation is to be a 'people pleaser' No matter how well you live, there are always going to be them who dislike you. I just roll with it, and so long as I am not trampling on your flower beds.. I really don't care if I am popular. I know God loves me, and he gives me freedom to be myself. He is also who rewards me, in the here and and now and in eternity. That said, I tend to be my own worst critic
Criticism is just another person trying to make you believe that their way is the right way to do something. In art, I try to keep the things im doing my own without caring about what other people think, and in the end, i like what I have done better because its not someone else' s idea of "how it should be"
Point taken, but perhaps you should stick with your art and music, just my opinion, but what better way to develop your speaking skills than just practice (albeit, live for the world to see). Live and let Die!

I don't think there is anything I could say to you to help you to understand how condescending that statement was.. it's almost like you didn't pay attention to what he was talking about.
Maybe you're just too used to poorly edited videos on YouTube, where people use jumpcuts to form their sorry excuse for thoughts. This is much different. This person is sharing his thoughts with us in a single take. He's clearly not reading from a script, yet he completely stays on topic.
i think that criticism is good as long as it's not overdone. too much is bad and too little is bad. too much can discourage someone and too little can cause complacency.
It's always tricky to judge how self critical to be, what is a healthy amount. It's a struggle, sometimes you will get it wrong, and what your doing will suffer to some degree, other times you'll get it dead right and you'll nail it. I wouldn't listen to other people too much though, unless you feel like they understand what your doing, or you truly relate to what they are saying
do you smoke waaaaaaaaayy too much weed? or just think to yourself alot? not being critical but lifes too short for this debate. just be happy no? i find that to work for me.
That's the first time I've ever heard anyone talk about criticism like that, so thoughtfully and well explained. I really liked how you explained it with a hunter with bow and arrow and the deer, you really thought it all our well!
think for youself, question authority. take control and decide who influences you. letting people control you with criticism is like allowing viruses to bypass your antivirus security.
I agree. i tried to link you to this real moving poem about this kid getting drilled not to do what he feels like artistically and he kills himself--true tale
ALSo praise can be a bummer too, cause what that can do is make you not try anything new cause you feel that you may fail
I see this a lot with some peoples vids who get lots of views and they just become these characters that do same stuff over and over to please their audience
@zezt continued-- years ago in Amsterdam, and they were mindblowing. truly. His early work is a bit grim, but as he starts using that mad free expression, his paintings just--cant describe it, they LIVE--the light. just amazing. you have to see the originals to really feel this
Criticism typically occurs when someone imposes their authority over someone whom is supposed to have less authority than them. Sometimes it is an abuse of power (destructive), other times is it done to teach the other (the one being criticized) to assume their own authority - to realize their own strengths (constructive) - through a trusted mentor. Most often criticism is both destructive and constructive. It is up to you to do the construction! Look towards your aspirations. Best wishes!
I often take criticism for my music, and it seems like when i go against the criticism and do something abstract that maybe i'll only enjoy, the music is more sincere, and i seem to get lost in it more.
i'm not going against it because i'm some sort of "Non conformist", i just believe that its useless to pick on other peoples art, because an artist can't really control what they're inspired by, and therefore can't control they're art.
but i don't really think art is something to be controlled.
i think with too much criticism people end up making and creating the same cookie cutter bullshit that marches to that familiar beat of stagnancy.but i think without criticism at a young age those kids are in for a rude awakening as they grow older and become more prone to disapproval.so how much criticism is ideal? well, that's a damn good question and one that i think deserves recognition.also, being able to cope with and overcome criticism at a young age can be crucial to a person's well-being.
2)...I think you are saying that criticism is essential and just be. So it can be good or bad. So it isn't completely good or bad. And you are taking me to a difference and not to a judgement. And I think that you are exerting a good criticism on criticism. I think this difference you are putting across is an opinion that intend to make others free, whereas a judgement would have been the bad criticism which can clip a person's wings.
1)Yes, I like very much this topic. I've listened to this many time to understand better what you are saying here. It also help me a lot with my bad english. Your way to speak is really understandable and also reveals an interesting open mind. This time I thought that you aren't really thinking about this: "Is criticism good or bad?" as the title would suggest....
There seems to be an economic incentive to public opinion deciding whats good and what isn't. When we are free and clear like little children everything is excellent, even when its awful....it is excellently awful. You are a contemporary philosopher.
critisizm only serves to make others feel more comfortable in things they cant do or achieve themselves.I live by the old school way of thinking "If you dont have anything good to say, dont say anything at all".Vincent was my idea of the perfect artist not only on canvas but how he persisted off his own back going against convention,he sacrifised a lot!
@spiralisedcat it's pretty ironic that in his own life time he struggled to sell one painting. fast foward 100 years later when his painting "dr. gachet" was auctioned for $83,000,000 to became the most expensive painting in history, surpassed only in 2004 by a picasso for $104,000,000.
My second listening made things clearer, but still don't understand what you mean about insecure broken spirits and where have you known secure, unbroken spirits. It sounds pretty interesting. Like god and human beings: god created them with uncriticizable words which human beings ascribed to him with criticizable words. Who is the superior if the inferior is what makes it superior? And who isn't critical? And why? Or how? Peace.
"To thine own self be true." Thankyou Micah for bringing up such an essential topic. There are so many things that determine us is when we get lazy; gender, ethnicity, culture, education, age, ... others' criticism, others' praise. When we can see how all these kind of things influence us, then we can sometimes slip between them and actually act out of freedom.
We need to understand that a 'point of view' is not an espousal. It is simply that place at which we stand and look (and listen).
Look at the credentials of the one leveling the criticism. If the credentials are invalid, the criticism can be ignored. If the criticism is coming from valid credentials then the criticism could be mined for all the gold within it.
@Rutle yeah, i think a bit of push is necessary sometimes, but too many critics are just insecure. i think most critical people feel the need to bring others down to make themselves feel better.
Thank you for placing this frame of mind, and discussion out to the people in the Youtube community. Very strong points. I really would like to dig more into your thoughts, great vlog update Micah!
the word criticism has a negative connotation for me. i think that when we are young guidance is needed in order for us to learn but never criticism. harsh critcism breaks one's spirit and stifles one's inate sense of creativity and potentially changes one's artistic direction based on someone elses vision. you will never see me leave a critical comment on any video on youtube simply because i feel i have no right to critique anyone's vision.
@healthyaddixion that perfectly summarizes my thoughts completely on the topic. yes, i think most critical people themselves are broken spirits. it seems the days i'm most critical are the same days i feel the most insecure. i think people get critical of other people's flaws in effort to forget their own.
Sorry for my english Micah, but I didn't understand what you mean with criticism as something negative. I always thought that criticism is the way to find our own opinions and that there's no communications without criticism. I'd like to know if when you speak critically against people who are critical, your criticism is good or bad, positive or negative. An in that case who is most insecure? But, most of all, who can be secure? Peace.

Check out "do schools kill creativity" from TED lectures on Youtube. Talks about children and criticism and "being wrong".

Holy cow! Who has $83,000,000 to spend on a painting? I wonder if they are just buying it for the trophy value and not the actual art.
