The original SOR soundtrack is so successful because it has its basis in House music. The later SOR soundtracks used Techno as a basis and weren't nearly as well recognised or respected. The original composer is Yuzo Koshiro.

I'd have to respectully disagree with the latter half of your comment. SOR2's soundtrack is just as respected as the originals. Yuzo's even gone so far as to say that SOR2's soundtrack was his greatest work.
