snapchick I wanted to ask you a question but didn't know if thise the right place. Have you ever thought of moving to a full frame camera? I also have the D300s and was tauting the idea since the ISO on these cameras are quite attractive.
I recently bought my very 1st dSLR a Nikon d5100. since im a mother of 5 boys i love taking pictures of them and my recipes for my mommy vlog channel.
I would love to have the N50mmf/1.4G but a friend offered me a Sigma 50mm1.4(rotating type lens)for half the price of a Nikon.Maam, would i go for it or would you rather suggest for me to have the Nikon 50mm1.8 instead, because it has the same price of the offered Sigma? 1 thing for sure,I would really want to have a very nice Bokeh though.ThankU
I use Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5/5.6 Image Stabiliser USM for a walkabout lens, it has a reasonable sharpness, sometimes I like to use my EF 85mm f/1.8 USM lens outdoors because the limitations and 1.6 crop sensor, cause me to be more creative in how and what I shoot. It is really sharp as well, being a portrait lens.
Many photography teachers require students to spend quite a lot of time with a single focal length lens (prime) to develop their eye. From the film days a 50mm lens was standard issue, with DSLR cameras that has changed. I encourage anyone who is interested in developing their technique to build their lens collection around a really nice prime. Thanks, and keep on posting.

@thedashingderek2 Yes. The only difference these days is that you set the aperture using the command dial on the camera rather than rotating an aperture ring at the base of the lens.
@TheSnapChick Doesn't sound too complicated. I used to be a darkroom tech/photog for a small newspaper. If I could learn that, I can learn this. But things changed so quickly, y'know? It was just a few short years ago when we were still using film.
Shouldn't use a teleconverter, it makes lenses slower, less speed to focus, and it loses sharpness. But i don't mind. Its certainly a lot cheaper than buying a 340mm lens.
@rorrt It's all relative... 70-200 with 1.7x is stil a fast lens, which focuses quickly, and is very sharp at f8. The 70-200 is an ace of a lens, so adding a teleconverter does not knock it off its throne :)
While I am pretty happy with the TC-14E2 I think the largest problem it has is the bokeh, its ugly. That said I always stop my glass down to F8 or so when using a TC to maintain sharpness so bokeh quality is less of a issue.

@Medowin It is tough for me to answer this question because I do not own the 50mm f1.4. The reason for this is that I have never felt lacking with the 50mm f1.8.
@Medowin The 50 1,4D which i currenlty own, works brilliant and i love it, but aprently the new 50mmm 1.8G is the best 50mm out in my opinion its a lot sharper and better bokeh :)
Hi Lee, just one thing. The 17-55 is a DX lens, meaning will not fully utilize the full frame sensor.
Sure, you can use it with a FX camera, but only if the crop mode is activated. Therefore you sacrifice a lot of resolution of the FX chip. If you shoot FX, the much better choice is the 24-70 f2.8.
Anyways, the 70-200 is also one of my favorites, the 50 f 1.4 also and my last addition is the 135 f2 D a superb portrait lens :)

Hi, in the next Days i should get my Nikkor 50mm 1.4 AF-S as my first fixed lens. Have you experience with this lens and how would you compare it with your own 50mm f1.8 lens? Greetings from Austria!
Even if it comes out, don't bother. The 50/1.4 is where you want to be. Or something shorter if you're stuck on DX. The 35/2 can't be beat. Happy to share some full res shots from either to back up what I'm sayin.
@b0dhisattvah I shoot the 35mm f1.8 all the time. For 50mm f1.8g, I'll wait until I have one in my hands before I evaluate it. I'm quite happy with the 50mm f1.8D.
Dear SC, I'm new to DSLRs and I'm going to buy my first one (nikon D5100) in some days. I don't want to make a wrong inversion and want so choose the best lenses. I've been suggested of a prime 50mm 1.8 though I don't know why. I also want to ask you if should I buy the 55-200 coming with the kit, or buy the body only and a 18-200. really, I don't know if the difference is only their zoom capacity. Do you think the 50mm 1.8 and the 55-200 will do fine for my starting family? Best wishes!!
@rockanal 50mm and the 55-200 would leave you a bit lacking on the wide end. If you have the budget for it, I would go for the 18-200 and then decide if a prime like the 35mm f1.8 or 50mm f1.8 would be a good buy for you (for instance, for low light). Just my opinion... there are an unlimited number of ways to go!
thats great beutiful because i recently got a 18 to 105 and theirs a piece broken its the part where u cover the small glass on top where u have to twist it broke and now the cap comes of was it expensive to repair urs and i have a 55 to 200 and its not vr so thats why i was asking is the pic going to be the same quality or i makes a change
ok so all of ur lenses have the vr and what u think about the none vr lenses and also another question have u ever got any of ur lenses repair and if u do who does it for u
@inwoodboy1 I own several lenses without VR - 17-55, 18-70, 35mm, 50mm. They all work great. I have had lenses repaired directly from Nikon - they have a form that you fill out on their website and it gives you all of the info for sending it in.
Don't you find it a bit of a hassle to carry around that heavy large camera, I guess there are no other options unless you want to lose the performance and image quality with another smaller camera...
you doing nothing wrong... can i see this photo? and a sample at f1.8? you compare between apertures? im curious and the nikon help hotline only explain the way to get the best of each lens but feel free to disagree
@321242 The most recent photos on my website (B&W photos) were with the 50mm at f2.8. These are in black and white, but if you email me (my address is on the top of my website), I will send you a color version or two. I do not have any samples handy at f1.8, because I rarely need that little DOF. Email me and I will send you a shot or two at f1.8. No lens that I have used or seen is sharp at f1.8, but "useless?" No way.
50mm ƒ/1.4D / 50mm ƒ/1.4G AF-S is ideal for low light photography where you will be using apertures from F/2.0 to F/4.0 for maximum image quality before the lens diffraction occurs on lower apertures beyond F/4.0.
50mm ƒ/1.8D AF is ideal for using low apertures where you need more depth of field when using F/4.0 to F/8.0 (DX, F/16.0 for FX). The larger apertures between F/1.8 and F/4.0 are useless due to chromatic aberration, which softens the image.
@321242 Interesting. I shot the 50mm f1.8 at f2.8 on my D2x Saturday morning for an hour, indoors and out, and the pics look fine. I must be doing something wrong ;)
Hello, i have just upgrade my camera from Nikon D90 to Nikon 300s. I am really interested in Fashion Photography. So, i wanna ask like which lens is good for Fashion photography as well as potraits. Pls reply me am confuse..
Two quick questions. Is the 70-200 in this video the version 1 or version 2? And also i have someone wanting to sell me a good condition version 1 70-200mm for $1350. What do you think of that price for this lens?
@jmstew0319 Version 1. I enjoy every minute of using it. Based on budget, etc... you will have to determine which is best for you, but with the use I get from the version 1, I can't find a reason to trade up to the version 2. :)
@MrDirdyBirdy I misspoke in the video. See the comments below. Yes, 17-55 and 18-200 can be used on FX bodies. I will eventually remake this video to correct the slight error, but right now I'm too busy making new videos :)
@MrDirdyBirdy And I say that at 4:16 in the video - I transposed the 50mm and 17-55mm, though. Having the camera rolling can do strange things while you are talking cameras :)
great video...gives me a good idea what I need. I want to know what will happen if the sensor is not fully utilised when the 17-200mm lens is used in a full frame camera?
@acranktownsend Great idea for a video! I do often use the ones that come with my lenses, but I will show about them and talk about the 'why' in a video.
@jmstew0319 Im a professional photographer based in montreal, and all i use is a pc! lightroom 3 is an incredible program. I dont see a need in moving to mac, but you never know :P
@MIkeness101 If it works for you then i wouldn't worry about it. Just a comment posted in fun to highlight that MacOS is, especially in photography, a far more solid OS than Windows and generally offers a better experience. But thats just my opinion.
@jmstew0319 No doubt about it, i used to work with a lot of clients that required a lot of digital editing and mac was always the way to go. Especially for graphic design, pardon my english, im french haha.
@EuphoricRender Simple. The operating system. The whole software environment is just way more solid and efficient than windows is. Mac OS with no security software is far more safe than windows fully secured with antivirus, firewall, etc. All of which bog down memory as well. Plus a huge advantage for apple is that they make both the hardware and software so there is much better quality control throughout development. Everything just works together naturally.
@jmstew0319 more efficient? show me proof and a legit source that says that.
ive been using windows for about 15 years now and i've only had one problem with viruses a long time ago in the p2p network craze before torrents. ever since my computer has been virus and problem free.
apple may make both the software and the hardware, but my windows machine operates beautifully & i never have any issues with it. I paid a grand for this comp & with the same specs from apple it would cost be a good 4k
@123456789rienn I have not had exposure problems on variable aperture lenses. Of course, the smaller the aperture as you zoom, the worse performance you may get in lower light situations. For the 17-55, generally you would use the longer end for portraits, giving a similar field of view to the 85mm on an FX camera.
Are G lenses bad?? I want to get a 35mm 1.8 for my D5000 but all I can find at a reasonable price is a G type lens. I read somewhere to stay away from them!
@smithy2306 35mm f1.8 with the D5000 is a great combo. There was some negative press years ago when G lenses (lenses without an aperture ring) were first introduced. Cameras like the D5000 do not use an aperture ring on the lens - aperture is set on camera, so there is no reason for an aperture ring at all. Get the 35mm f1.8 and you will love it!
@TheSnapChick i have a tough question for u so get ready,which lens combination would be better overall,a nikon 17-55mm F/2.8 with a nikon 35mm AF-s 1.8G OR! a nikon 24mm af-s f/1.4G ED+NIKON 16-85mm VR F3.5-5.6?pls answer
@NAGULNR2 This depends entirely on whether or not you would be taking advantage of f2.8 throughout the zoom range on the 17-55. If you plan to shoot in available light and/or indoors very often, the 17-55 is worthwhile. If you primarily shoot daylight and don't mind relying on flash indoors, the 16-85 is more viable.
@SaDScO Yes, see the comments below, I misspoke. But, I would have no qualms using the 17-55 on an FX camera in a pinch. Even at 6mp, it produces nice images.
how do you think of the 70-300mm G type lens? its an older one but i will be using it on an N80 which is a film camera that doesnt support the VR on the newer model tell me how you feel about it
@willcitoman97 Great lens. I had one for a long time and eventually gave it away to an assistant. It is a little soft between 200-300mm, but not to a harmful degree. It is not superb in low light due to the variable aperture, but for outdoors, it's a real champ!
@TheSnapChick i cant decide between the nikon 17-55mm DX and the nikon 16-85mm VR II,i can pay the extra bit for the 17-55 but i wanna know what im getting if i spend more money
@TeamUSKBrunei Tough question not knowing your budget. Primes like the 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm are king for "low light for the buck." For a mid-range zoom like the 17-55dx F2.8, you're talking over $1k.
@TheSnapChick Sorry about that...I read further after I had already replied. I get to try out the 17-55 tomorrow on my D90! Urban Engagement Session...should be fun.
WTF the 17-55 and the 18-200 are not full frame they are dx lens !! the 50mm and the 70-200 are the only FF lens you have...you have so expensive gear and you don't know the basics :S
@TelisRafa At 4:16, I indicate that the 18-200 will not utilize the full sensor for FX. In the comments below, we discussed how I flip-flopped the 50mm and 17-55 with regard to DX/FX. Sometimes my mind and mouth aren't working on the same team ;)
@TheSnapChick its definitely better. you must be shooting models and lots of portraits and that camera gives you a lot of details and a whole new experience!
@dothisdothat321 Some photographers might like the longer reach of the 18-200 to shoot closeup headshots with a narrower field of view (more zoom). This causes less potential for unflattering distortion in the face. That being said, I have and will continue to shoot portraits with both. :)
@TheSnapChick Sigma 10-20mm f3.5. you have have a bunch of options obviously but this lens is the one I would want to meet the parents after the first date. Fast focus, close minimum focusing distance, PLUS (Not many people realize this) set single focus point to center or manual focus to .5-1 foot and surprise someone with a photoburst up close in the face (Friends/Family Recommended) - Amazing results. I call it the paparazzi;)
it doesn't matter if its a beginners lens or what, it's your own preference plus this lens is a general purpose lens, which means whenever you're scouting for pics, focal range will be useful dumbass!!!! maybe youz are the noobz hahaha
Hey Snap Chick have a look at my channel and see what DrOhlee says about my photography. It seems to go around judging others wrongly and maliciously. Yet! He has no photographic work to produce..You and I both know hes not a photographer as being a photographer is more than just shooting an image.
I'll send you my website and have an unbiased opinion.
50mm why not 1.4 or 1.2?? seems like u compromise on quality, beacuse ur a tide ass ,or most likely you r not a pro as you would like to think u are,18-200 its a lame joke ,its a low range lens, low quality, and soft images ,shit lens with out a doubt.

@UnderLineFilms 16-85 overlaps a lot with your 18-55. Ultra-wide like the 10-20 would round out your collection. 18-55 gives you macro.

Keep up the good work.
Cheers,
Paul from Slovakia

Hi, in the next Days i should get my Nikkor 50mm 1.4 AF-S as my first fixed lens. Have you experience with this lens and how would you compare it with your own 50mm f1.8 lens? Greetings from Austria!
blackktm 10 months ago
@blackktm I have not used that lens. There is a 50mm f1.8 coming out soon which I have my eye on :)
TheSnapChick 10 months ago
@TheSnapChick @TheSnapChick
Even if it comes out, don't bother. The 50/1.4 is where you want to be. Or something shorter if you're stuck on DX. The 35/2 can't be beat. Happy to share some full res shots from either to back up what I'm sayin.
b0dhisattvah 10 months ago

Best wishes!!
rockanal 10 months ago
@rockanal 50mm and the 55-200 would leave you a bit lacking on the wide end. If you have the budget for it, I would go for the 18-200 and then decide if a prime like the 35mm f1.8 or 50mm f1.8 would be a good buy for you (for instance, for low light). Just my opinion... there are an unlimited number of ways to go!

@rockanal I would get the 18-55mm kit, then decide whether or not you would like a prime at later date, like I did.

@inwoodboy1 I own several lenses without VR - 17-55, 18-70, 35mm, 50mm. They all work great. I have had lenses repaired directly from Nikon - they have a form that you fill out on their website and it gives you all of the info for sending it in.

321242 1 year ago
@321242 The most recent photos on my website (B&W photos) were with the 50mm at f2.8. These are in black and white, but if you email me (my address is on the top of my website), I will send you a color version or two. I do not have any samples handy at f1.8, because I rarely need that little DOF. Email me and I will send you a shot or two at f1.8. No lens that I have used or seen is sharp at f1.8, but "useless?" No way.
TheSnapChick 1 year ago
50mm ƒ/1.4D / 50mm ƒ/1.4G AF-S is ideal for low light photography where you will be using apertures from F/2.0 to F/4.0 for maximum image quality before the lens diffraction occurs on lower apertures beyond F/4.0.
50mm ƒ/1.8D AF is ideal for using low apertures where you need more depth of field when using F/4.0 to F/8.0 (DX, F/16.0 for FX). The larger apertures between F/1.8 and F/4.0 are useless due to chromatic aberration, which softens the image.

@sarojhbl Hi! What is your approximate budget for a new lens?
TheSnapChick 1 year ago
Two quick questions. Is the 70-200 in this video the version 1 or version 2? And also i have someone wanting to sell me a good condition version 1 70-200mm for $1350. What do you think of that price for this lens?
jmstew0319 1 year ago
@jmstew0319 Version 1. I enjoy every minute of using it. Based on budget, etc... you will have to determine which is best for you, but with the use I get from the version 1, I can't find a reason to trade up to the version 2. :)
TheSnapChick 1 year ago
pffff.... 50mm 1.8 CAN BE USED ON FX BODIES... but 17-55 and 18-200 CAN'T :| these 2 are DX Lenses... and u'r a serious photographer... LOL...
MrDirdyBirdy 1 year ago
@MrDirdyBirdy I misspoke in the video. See the comments below. Yes, 17-55 and 18-200 can be used on FX bodies. I will eventually remake this video to correct the slight error, but right now I'm too busy making new videos :)

@MIkeness101 If it works for you then i wouldn't worry about it. Just a comment posted in fun to highlight that MacOS is, especially in photography, a far more solid OS than Windows and generally offers a better experience. But thats just my opinion.
jmstew0319 1 year ago
@jmstew0319 No doubt about it, i used to work with a lot of clients that required a lot of digital editing and mac was always the way to go. Especially for graphic design, pardon my english, im french haha.
MIkeness101 1 year ago
@jmstew0319 what exactly is so much better about a mac? overpirced just because it has a little apple logo on it
EuphoricRender 1 year ago
@EuphoricRender Simple. The operating system. The whole software environment is just way more solid and efficient than windows is. Mac OS with no security software is far more safe than windows fully secured with antivirus, firewall, etc. All of which bog down memory as well. Plus a huge advantage for apple is that they make both the hardware and software so there is much better quality control throughout development. Everything just works together naturally.
jmstew0319 1 year ago
@jmstew0319 more efficient? show me proof and a legit source that says that.
ive been using windows for about 15 years now and i've only had one problem with viruses a long time ago in the p2p network craze before torrents. ever since my computer has been virus and problem free.
apple may make both the software and the hardware, but my windows machine operates beautifully & i never have any issues with it. I paid a grand for this comp & with the same specs from apple it would cost be a good 4k
EuphoricRender 1 year ago
Hi
I have some questions
Isn't it hard to get de right exposure if you use vari apperture zoomlensen? ( If you don't have a lot of time)
Why do you use the 17-55 f2.8 for portraits? What about wide angle distortion?
123456789rienn 1 year ago
@123456789rienn I have not had exposure problems on variable aperture lenses. Of course, the smaller the aperture as you zoom, the worse performance you may get in lower light situations. For the 17-55, generally you would use the longer end for portraits, giving a similar field of view to the 85mm on an FX camera.
TheSnapChick 1 year ago
Are G lenses bad?? I want to get a 35mm 1.8 for my D5000 but all I can find at a reasonable price is a G type lens. I read somewhere to stay away from them!
smithy2306 1 year ago
@smithy2306 35mm f1.8 with the D5000 is a great combo. There was some negative press years ago when G lenses (lenses without an aperture ring) were first introduced. Cameras like the D5000 do not use an aperture ring on the lens - aperture is set on camera, so there is no reason for an aperture ring at all. Get the 35mm f1.8 and you will love it!

@TheSnapChick cheers doll, thanks for the info!

@TheSnapChick i have a tough question for u so get ready,which lens combination would be better overall,a nikon 17-55mm F/2.8 with a nikon 35mm AF-s 1.8G OR! a nikon 24mm af-s f/1.4G ED+NIKON 16-85mm VR F3.5-5.6?pls answer
NAGULNR2 1 year ago
@NAGULNR2 This depends entirely on whether or not you would be taking advantage of f2.8 throughout the zoom range on the 17-55. If you plan to shoot in available light and/or indoors very often, the 17-55 is worthwhile. If you primarily shoot daylight and don't mind relying on flash indoors, the 16-85 is more viable.
TheSnapChick 1 year ago
17-55mm is dx lens, so you wouldnt use it on a full frame camera.
SaDScO 1 year ago
@SaDScO Yes, see the comments below, I misspoke. But, I would have no qualms using the 17-55 on an FX camera in a pinch. Even at 6mp, it produces nice images.
TheSnapChick 1 year ago
how do you think of the 70-300mm G type lens? its an older one but i will be using it on an N80 which is a film camera that doesnt support the VR on the newer model tell me how you feel about it
willcitoman97 1 year ago
@willcitoman97 Great lens. I had one for a long time and eventually gave it away to an assistant. It is a little soft between 200-300mm, but not to a harmful degree. It is not superb in low light due to the variable aperture, but for outdoors, it's a real champ!
TheSnapChick 1 year ago
@TheSnapChick i cant decide between the nikon 17-55mm DX and the nikon 16-85mm VR II,i can pay the extra bit for the 17-55 but i wanna know what im getting if i spend more money

I'm using Nikon D3000 with kit lens and 35mm f1.8. what lens do you recommend me to have for low light and zoom range?
TeamUSKBrunei 1 year ago
@TeamUSKBrunei Tough question not knowing your budget. Primes like the 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm are king for "low light for the buck." For a mid-range zoom like the 17-55dx F2.8, you're talking over $1k.
TheSnapChick 1 year ago
You should try the 50mm f/1.4 (AF-D or AF-S) much better built quality than the f/1.8
This is what I have :o)
AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8
AF-S 105mm f/2.8 VR micro (sharpest lens on the market)
Ai-S 300mm f/4.5 IF-ED (smallest Nikon 300mm)
Next purchase: AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8

what would be the reason on using the 18-200mm vs the 50mm 1.8d for portraits?
dothisdothat321 1 year ago
@dothisdothat321 Some photographers might like the longer reach of the 18-200 to shoot closeup headshots with a narrower field of view (more zoom). This causes less potential for unflattering distortion in the face. That being said, I have and will continue to shoot portraits with both. :)
