In the programme Ares admits to being in love with Xena in season 5. His interest as Gabrielle to be his new warrior happens at the beginning of season 5 before this confession to Xena. He gives up his immortality to save Xena's life and those she loves most.

theres a twist to the show usually its Ares/Xena, my fav Xena/Gabrielle, or Gabrielle/Joxer. very nice, I liked it alot!
