This technique has been prohibited since the 1980 All Japan Championship, when the great Yamashita had been his fibula broken while resisting Endo's attack (by Kani Basami).
Look for the video (I found it on dailymotion "video/x4yuhq_yasuhiro-yamashita-jpn-sumio-endo-j_sport")
Oh please post a warning that no one should attempt this without instruction and learning how to break fall! this is an extremely dangerous technique! this is one I personally would not post out of fear some numb nut would try it. I shall give this one point I learned in course of 40 years. pulling your opponent to inner leg one closest to the attack will make throw more fluid.
@lallope Yes, you can blow out a knee to the opponent with this throw. Plus, if you do not put your free hand out as a base support when you come in the correct direction you can break your own wrist. This video demonstrates every aspect of this throw perfectly.
@johnny102marvin yes very true but there are variation where one can use their back but are norm one always must place hand down, not only the knee but person back break back, neck or acquire a broken hip with concussion also, this throw is right in there with Ashigarami, Daki Age, and Kawazu Gake, because of horrible injuries that they cause,,,,sticky mats also are a horrible problem for knees,,we need to protect our bodies to enjoy Judo
@lallope Speaking of mats. These mats like you say become very sticky. But, a lot of people do not realize that these mats collect a lot of bad bacteria. You can get a skin staph infection from these mats. These mats need to be cleaned and disinfected with some kind of chemical at least once a week.
@ninjalla Banned, not obsolete. There's nothing that really replaces it, and it is a feasible technique. Don't get me wrong, though, I'm glad you posted it.
@ninjalla Thank you for your efforts in documenting every Judo technique, not just the ones that are legal or most effective in competition!
Judo is a full featured martial art and I'm just getting into it now but the overemphasis on competition is really kind of sad. There is so much more to the art!
If you don't come in right, it is possible to tear the ACL or, if worse, break the leg. This is why kawazu gake is also illegal: it is really easy to break the leg, but its one of my favorite techniques in practice because it couples with uchi mata really well.
because you have to throw yourself into the side of the persons body, and lots of people have had their MCLs (I think) destroyed by this move by people either doing it wrong, or throwing themselves into the side of the knee with too much force.
This technique attempted in competition was found to be extremely dangerous to the opponents neck, especially to those who were not used to that technique.
Yes, he's right. The reason why Kani-basami is banned in Judo tournaments is because at the 1980 All Japan Judo Championships, a judoka fractured his opponent's left leg with that move.
How did i get here from PONIES!?

I really want to start judo, I have been doing Muay Thai for self defense and fitness. I think Judo would compliment it very well.

@antonyneal I agree. It's a good background.
ninjalla 6 months ago
@antonyneal This isn't Judo, really neighter in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu this move is aloud. It's a Ninjutsu technique.

@newjudoka but why is kani basami not okay in competition?
TheRealityRocks 1 year ago
@TheRealityRocks i "think" it can really mess the other persons leg up if you're strong enough. which is good just not in competition.

I'm glad that my Senseis teach outside the narrow box into which the IJF confines the rest of the judo world.

Cool technique. I believe this is what Ryo Chonan used to takedown and submit (with a heel hook) Anderson Silva in Pride FC.

it's illegal in official matches

True, but in our effort to document martial arts techniques in the akban-wiki we try to document even obsolete techniques

Just to be precise: The fact that is forbidden in competition doesn't mean that Judo doesn't have it.
