i have not read the book, but i will tell you this movie " orlando " is the most beautiful movies i have ever seen, clever in it's dialoge and thought provoking..PLEASE don't watch it on you tube, but rent it or buy it on ebay..it's simply a masterpiece.......
I dont know if you already know but Virginias book Orlando was written as a biography, It is actually a love between two women, and virginia had an affair with one of them and thats why she wrote a book..the names of women are Vita Sackville West-a femminist writer and Violet Trefusis- a novelist.google it up..the book was banned because of homosexuality thats why Virginia wrote it like this..Beautiful
I read this book for my 2nd year english course, and as such, can appreciate the artistic merits of the writing, etc, as well as the casting of the film (e.g. a man plays the Queen) but this book was still just a biiig WTF for me. Can't say I enjoyed it, although I appreciate the cultural and artistic importance of it.
The film is beautiful and beautifully made, but I read the book afterwards and found it a bit frustrating and pointless. It does not seem to say anything or go anywhere. There's only the novelty of someone living through centuries without aging, and changing sex at one stage. Maybe I there's something I've misssed but I did not see any more to it.
Jeez, what are you talking about?! Why don't you read more and learn how to feel and see deeply without visual aids? You don't know how to use your mind, your imagination. I'm sure you are a child of the computer generation.
I googled this movie to see if anyone was in their right mind to be a raving fan. Hooray! Of course it's based on something even bigger...just got Ms.Woolf's novel. I should say I think she would admire how it turned out. The descriptives are lush, vivid and blood racing. How they managed to translate this to screen is a brilliant inspiration. It is an element of the human condition, infrequently explored, much less expressed. Get the soundtrack. It rocks too. Love this movie, capitol "L".
If this helps, you may have it ordered anywhere that DVDS are sold. But don't expect to find it used. I've been looking for a long time. I bought mine at Columbia House DVD, for less than a buck- but had to sign up for membership to get it, ick.
Sally Potter (the director) cowrote the film score, with David Motion. The soundtrack CD is still for sale on Amazon, and there are samples of each track ... you might find your answer there? The soundtrack snippets didn't work in my browswer, but you might have better luck. Cheers, J
Could it be ANYWHERE NEAR as good as the book? The book is one of the most beautiful things I have ever read.

It is not as good as the memorizing and intriguing book - but the movie is compelling in it's own right and the cast is perfect!

I am always captivated by this film. It's such a pity that it is so hard to come by a physical copy of the film. It is without a doubt great.
