  • Sexy beautiful!

  • VERY cool dance move at 1:11.

  • Downtown

    In the pinball arcade

With his head full of pool hall pitches

And songs from the hit parade

He'd be singing "Bye, Bye, Love"

While he's racking up his free play

  • @Frottagecub that's so me .... :)

  • this world class band is working very hard... I'm still watchin' again..and again..

  • young&fine

  • I watch this video about a dozen times a week because it make me happy!

  • Rebel Without a Cause...This is one of my all time favorite vidieos. Jaco and Joni ROCK!!!

  • It's the spirit of music babies

  • Man If you don't feel the groove...then you're dumb !!!

  • Jaco is my hero!

  • At 2:58-3:00 is typical Metheny phrasing that he used in one of his albums.

  • "Phase Dance"

  • Pat Metheny is my hero!

  • I stand corrected... :-)

  • Who's the left-handed guitar on the stand for (Unless it's a LH guitar strung RH..)? Anybody else notice Lyle Mays quoting 'Minuano' at 2.59?

  • The quote is of "Phase Dance." "Minuano" wouldn't be written for another few years... Still Life (Talking) came out in 87 and this is from 79.

  • I love that quote of Phase Dance. I'm glad others noticed it too.

  • I agree, oboedad.

This clearly ISN'T the album version over-dubbed.

  • Jaco Pastorius, Lyle Mays, etc. aren't on the album. Not to mention that is clearly a different version.

    Peace,

    oboedad5

  • My version of Shadows and Light has following personel listing. You must have a different version of the album.

Joni Mitchell - electric guitar, vocals

    Pat Metheny - lead guitar

    Jaco Pastorius - bass

    Don Alias - drums

    Lyle Mays - keyboards

    Michael Brecker - saxophone

The Persuasions - backing vocals on "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" & "Shadows and Light"

    Andy Johns - engineer

  • There is a specific Live version of the Shadow & KLight ablum came out mid/late 79. That is the album this video is from.

  • Is she fantastically beautiful or what?

  • This is not from the album. Pat Metheny isn't on the album, for starters. Give it another listen.

  • This is from the "Shadows and Light" tour...this is the version from the Live recording...

  • Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays and lost soul Jaco Pastorius as backing group - amazing.

  • I Love love love Joni but this cant be the music from this concert because the music and singing sounds EXACTLY as it did on the cd / album Hissing of Summer lawns. That is NOT possiblefor an open air concert to sound EXACTLY the same as a recorded album. Hmmm

  • It was recorded as an album separately and dvd came from it so I'm sure they setup recording equipment. It does sound really good though. :)

  • Seriously Aeerobic? This sounds very different from the album version. Take another listen. I really have no idea how you could possibly confuse the two. The guitar and bass in particular are totally different

  • Hi sbonfiglioli. I play the album and listen to the You Tube and, to me, it sounds like an exact duplicate. Then again....you can be spot on, as well.

  • It just sounds so exactly the same as the album and the mouth movement are abit off I apologize if I am remiss.

  • Well you are probably talking about the live album, which is this exact performance

  • This is the very best!

  • I have goosebumps watching this. Incredible. Thank you for sharing.

  • Jazz greats, James Dean and Joni Mitchell. What an epic combination.

  • Don Alias is the man, no question about it! I really haven't heard him on set except for this concert, and all I can say is he is sooo fuckin solid

  • If you listen to the bassline alone, you instantly knows whos behind the magic - The varition, spontaniousity and groove.

  • jaco, joni, pat.m this is somethin else, some kinda groove concept in bass playin with superp arrangement, cant get better than this !

  • Great music video, just love early stuff with Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius and Lyle Mays ..... Joni's OK too.

  • Questo sì che è un SUPERGRUPPO!

    Gran bella canzone!

  • che è alla batteria che mi sfugge?

  • Don Alias è un grande percussionista jazz, anche se in questo video è batterista...

    Ciao

  • grazieee...nn mi ricordavo più...

don alias l'ho beccato su certi live di pastorius!! è un mito!

  • Unbelievably, I've never heard this song until tonight when I caught it for the first time (Radio 2 in the UK). I had to check it out here... it's just extraordinary. It's only once every few years you hear something that has such a profound emotional affect on you so instantly. I always thought Pat M was a bit - err - worthy. But right now I'm in tears. And OK, I confess - I'm a serious S Dan head. But this is way better than the toss B&F have been putting out 2 decades. Shall I go now?

  • heard this, for the first time, on r2 this evening too. fantastic. i love s dan aswell- including their later works. 2a.n. and everything must go. brilliant.

  • This is a great track from Joni. If you have not heard the album "Wild things run fast" from her worth a look . . . some amazing Guita parts from Mike Landau. Enjoy. Apologies if you know it. . from one Brummie to another !

  • Whata bass line

  • Oh my God how I was looking for this!!!!

    THANKS!!!

  • Agree 100% with mattleemattlee123, bass playing does not get any better than this bass line. End of.

  • PURE GENIUSES ON ONE STAGE...

  • This is THE bass lesson of all time. Jaco is loud, super swinging and funky, playing a LOT, throwing in chords, harmonics, hot counter-melody lines...and never EVER EVER getting in the way or stepping on anything.

It's everything that can possibly be done with a bass in one song, and could ONLY have been pulled off by Jaco. "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up!" He did.

  • At 2:59 listen to Lyle Mays quoting the intro to Metheny's Phase Dance. Pat Metheny seemed to get a big laugh out of it too.

  • Could catch!

  • Nice catch. I love how Metheny/Mays stuff sneaks in throughout this concert

  • grande composizione....Bravo jaco...ma pat...un altro mondo...

  • If I didn't allready play bass, I would after watching this video!

  • Shadows and Light is an awesome dvd Got the phase dance riff, and there is also a beatles riff but I can't remember where it is at the moment. Metheny is amazing and jaco, what can you say, what about michael, incredible solo in free man in paris and drycleaner. Is that a young ryan o'neal in the audience? does anyone know what movie the rock n roll dance clips are from? I wish I could have been at this concert.

  • Take me to the dance, do you want to dance- I love to dance!!!

  • God, Jaco is a BEAST. Amazing.

  • Oh Joni Joni Joni just beautiful ! When you read the lyrics, our lives are there. LOL xxx

  • Does'nt metheney grb the pick in a bit strange way? I'm a bass player by the way

  • Yes. He holds it between the thumb and both the index and middle fingers. Very unorthodox but you must admit it works for him well!

  • anybody who has ever seen a show at the santa barbara county bowl will really appreciate this.

  • St. Joan and her brilliant disciples! Thanks for posting this, suddenly it's 1977 again and I'm happy about it.

  • ....AND,for what it's worth, I think the bass line between 2:29 and 2:50 is the greatest thing he ever recorded!

    I know......it's a daft thing to claim.

  • jajaj, AMAZING!

  • A great Joni Song.

A lovely Metheny solo. But Jaco.....Oh, Jaco. He bounce and floats and chooses the RIGHT notes in the CORRECT moment for a transcendental performance.

    I AWARD THIS 6 ZAWINULS.

  • ...and don't ya love the way that the start of Chucks duck-walk syncs with possibly the most hip bass-harmonic of ALL TIME ?

  • This is the rare case when I can only repeat - oh, Jaco. You're totally right. Joni is a great talent. The song is beautiful and special. Pat played great. But Jaco... Well, I don't think he always did the right thing. But here he proved his talent. I love this bass-part, his playing fits the song perfectly, and it's so innovative for that time, especially considering that it was the concert. IMHO, two best moments are 2:44-45 and 2:48-49 (where he played series ov sevenths, this is awesome).

  • Man Joni can do it all. What incredible lyrics.

  • this clip takes me to another place. Its where I want to be. S'Wonderful, S,Marvelous.

  • in the war of independence

    rockin' roll ranks'

    sweetest victory...

  • Wild Things Run Fast, but i like you

    correction on

  • THIS IS GOOD MORNING WAKE UP MUSIC....

  • 6, of course, with the sublime "Shadows and Light"!

  • I have to say, I'm not a big fan of "Blue". But from "For the Roses" till "Mingus" she released nothing but perfect albums. She only broke the spell with "Wild Things Run Free". For 5 albums in a row Joni released not one single bad song.

  • Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker, Don Alias - the best back-up band ever! For the best singer-songwriter ever.

  • yes brambleyhedge! agree w/ you that this is a great lineup of gifted talent here...what a great performance! Thanks for posting this superunknown373! ....

  • you dont get lineups like this anymore, what will the next generation have to look up to

  • Who's the kid with the wild hair playing guitar?? jk

  • That is the famous guitarist and talented composer Pat Metheny. Many of his videos are available is YouTube.

  • jk means JOKE!!!! I was being sarcastic! LOLL!!!

  • Great tune! I love Jaco's work on this piece. Joni of course is wonderful.

  • Great tune! I love Jaco's work on this piece. Joni of course is wonderful.

  • thanks quesapa

  • what is the name of this dvd?

  • Shadows & lights

  • Too bad Joni's 'movement' into jazz was so bashed by the critics. I think it was the most creative period of her whole career...

  • the best part of joni, in my opinion.

  • Whose is the left-handed guitar on stage?

  • Ah hang on, my mistake - it's Pat's 335 with the strap slung over the lower cutaway.

  • Good eye, dude. I was wondering the same thing.

  • awesome stuff, anyone else catch the lick from phase dance in there?

  • First I heard this I had to stop the record and replay the lick - right after "songs from the hit parade.." slick - yeah the signiture Phase Dance lick.

  • Yep, I heard that Phase Dance riff right of the bat, and loved him smiling during and right after it!

  • That's Lyle Mayes for ya!

  • I first saw Pat Metheny on the bridge over the fountain at Unity Village, MO in 1974. His wild hair blowing. Guitar slung over his flannel shirt. He was just a kid - but already well known in Kansas City. I have followed his career since. A good friend moved to Santa Barbara in 1977. He was there that night. When the double-vinyl came out, I bought it. This remains my all-time favorite live recording. What a band. Pat and Lyle, Jaco, Elias and Brecker. This was a magic moment in history.

  • Jaco's the man here. Wen he hits those harmonics its pure Quality.

  • Pat Metheny has such an identifiable sound, I love the toothbrush he uses on the bottom of his guitar(ES-175)to hold the strap on! I saw him @ Gusman Hall(Miami) in 1981 on the "American Garage" tour with Lyle Mays, Mark Egan and Danny Gottleib-what a show!!

  • aaaaaaaahh this is amazing!!!

  • I got the CD back in the late 80's and was soooo freakin psyched when they finally released the DVD. Amazing players! Do yourself a favor and go buy it!!!

  • I've been watching theese clips from the Shadows and Lights dvd so many times. Now I've decided that I might as well go out and buy it, it's absolutely amazing stuff.

  • Me 2

  • Me 3.

And who says YouTube is taking money out of musician's pockets? :)

  • Joni, Jaco, Pat, Lyle, Don, and Michael together...what a band! Does it really ever get much better than this?

  • Don Alias and Jaco are just cookin' on this song!

  • are joni and pat the only ones still left alive? think so? rip them all

  • Lyle Mays, the keyboardist, should still be alive. I hope he hasn't passed as well. But WHAT a SIKK band. This is the sickest concert :-pp

  • Lyle Mays is alive and well and still playing with the Pat Metheny Group and doing his own projects. Don Alias unfortunately died last year, and Michael Brecker as you probably well know died of leukemia in January this year, but not before recording Pilgrimage, his best album and one of the best jazz albums of the new millenium. The Persuasions are all still doing good.

  • I'm longing for a new PMG album. I saw "The Way Up" show and it was the best musical performance I've seen in person. I was emotionally screwed up for a couple of days following the concert because it affected me so much.

  • Lent my dvd out and never saw it again so god bless you superunknown373 for posting this. (how many superunknowns are there?)Love joni but bought it for jaco's funky, jazzy, heavenly bass playing. Like God showing us a glimpse of his face

  • Joni with her dream team band, ladies and gents stand up!!

  • Amen, Brother !

  • Listen out for Pat sneaking a "Phase Dance" quote in at 2:58.

  • Wow! Great ears !

  • Here I was thinking I was the only one that picked up on that. Pretty awesome. Although I think it was Lyle that quoted it and Pat gets a good kick out of it.
