@jazznbear Oh okay. Please give me some time to learn it hahaha I got um.. tendonitis so I had to not play that song for a while. I'll post up what I remember in a while :) . And thank you!
After the next two days of jobs I'll head up to the attic.....it's the only place I haven't looked yet.....hopefully it is in manuscripts that I have packed away.
a footnote: this piece changes every time I play it....on our artistopia website you should be able to hear at least one early rendition of this piece from Eubie Blake Intro Jim Hession.....
Wow, thank you! That will be soooo much more useful. My auditions are in May.. Hope I can do it by that time. Haha I've already learned it up to 2:00 . (:
Wow, this is amazing, it would be pretty cool if you two did like , I dont know, maybe did something where both of you played and then combined it to make like a combination between each of you. I dont know how to explain it. Uhm but anyways and dang...i can sorta play by ear, but with this song i would never be able to play it by ear, too fast and welli im lazy.
Hi Jim. COuld you reccomend any books I could buy that have good stride piano? I have one only and it id ok. It is called Ragtime Piano-Belwin Mills. I am loooking for something newer with stride in it specifically?
Harlem Stride Piano Solos-1990 EKAY Music, inc.(transcribed by Riccardo Scivales;
also Jazz,Blues, Boogie and Swing for Piano, 1977 by Beldwin-Mills ed by Ronny Schiff
Google these on ebay....I still find MANY wonderful stride solos available on ebay. By the way if your "ragtime piano" folio is the one I've had for years there are two excellent James P. Johnson solos included.
I would strongly argue that Jim Hession is the best stride piano player to come along since the era of stride existed! YOur performances light up my whole day. BIG SMILE FROM EAR TO EAR!
Somewhere in the Library of Congress lies the transcription that I sent in years ago for the copyright. I know that I have a copy somewhere at the house but I have no clue where it is at this time. If I run across it I will send it to you. I have recorded this twice: once in 1973 and again in 1993. For now this might be an excellent opportunity for you to work on that ear training! I'm glad you enjoy it.
That was great playing thankyou. I have some recordings of Fats Waller playing stride pipe organ. I wonder, is there any modern equivalent player who does this?
Dick Hyman has several albums on organ, and he is a superlative stride player. Dick and I have had conversations about the Waller organ recordings. Check Hyman's discography to see if he recorded on pipe organ specifically.
Waller, being a piano student of Johnson's, learned the elements of the stride style that JPJ developed. While JPJ's personal style featured melodic/harmonic/rhythmic subtlety and intricacy, Fats broadened the sound with booming 10ths(LH) and simple but distinctive piano figures (RH). Waller's style fit his image as a driving swing player and popular entertainer. This is strictly an overview, as both men were truly multifaceted geniuses.
answer 2. Spend time listening to both players recordings
To EMMDM: I sent a reply to your YouTube account but was unable to get it to you because I am not listed as a "friend".
To answer your question. After this last move I have no idea where my copywritten manuscripts are. As soon as I find them I will make you a copy. There should be one on file at the Library of Congress.
You've set a new standard for yourself, now. By coincidence, I listened twice to your 1980 version earlier this evening. It's gratifying to know that other stride pianists can perform it. Congrats!
The other pianists that I know play this piece learned it off the 1973 EBM6 album. I don't know if anyone has learned the later incarnations, such as from "Rock Me In The Cradle of Love"on Pianomania.
Hi there Mr Hession!
From all the videos you've posted, I think this is my favorite one!
You should compose more often ;)
Have a nice day and thanks for cheering me up with your music!

How do you make a James P. Johnson piece turn into a Fats Waller piece?
