Personally, I know I was passed up for a number of jobs because of affirmative action (I'm white). I'm fine with that. It's called being circumspect. I was born with a considerable amount of social capital; I did not have to overcome centuries of discrimination, both social and institutional. Sotomayor, given her impressive record as a jurist, is living proof of the value of affirmative action. After all, the point of government jobs is to make the country better; equality is part of that.

Interesting how Clarence Thomas feels like his benefiting from affirmative action is like a chain around his neck because he is in a position where others assume he's where he is because of affirm action&not because he nec merits being in his position. Other aspects are political view, art, education, food, environment, etc. I would say that we are multicultural and that is why the U.S. and other countries succeed.
