@lakoleful Just saw something in the later uploads. Someone suggested that it might have been endometriosis. I looked it up on Wikipedia, sounds like that could've have been it.
@lakoleful Well in the Roots TNG miniseries, Bertha said she was bleeding internally and it couldn't be stopped. So it sounded like intenal hemorraging.
Whether every single syllable of the book was truely uttered by someone is not important. What is VERY important is that Alex gave people hope that they can find their identity and maybe even find their own ancestral village. I work on black genealogy myself and have had some very amazing successes, including reuniting 2 branches of a family lost to each other for 100 years. Now working on their African history. I know that most people have at least a 50% chance of finding their village.
Great Great Story.....Fantastic but yet so sad......Really makes u think...Im from Ireland,we had people here sent to Australia as Slaves many many years ago...Sad what White men done....
I had wondered what happened to Lewis Harvey (Murray) since he was in the first Roots but was not mentioned at all in Roots the Next Generations, Good to see that his family line continued.
Shame that Alex Haley's book "Roots" involved plagarism from "The African" by Harold Courlander. Also his claim to be a descendant of Kunta Kinte is also proved to be innacurate according to historians. Also it obscured the fact that some African tribes were selling slaves from other tribes. Although that does not excuse the buyers part in those horrible transactions either.
Alex Haley did admitt that his book was faction, meaning that it wasn't all true. But Alex did in fact trace his family ROOTS back to Africa. There was actually a slave captured named Kunta Kinta, later named Toby, that had daughter named Kizzy, who had a son named George, who had host of children, and of those children had a son named Tom Murray, who had a host of children also, but of those children had a daughter named Cynthia, who had Bertha, who gave birth to Alex! Those are the facts!
I tend to believe the words coming out of the mouths of Haley's own FAMILY, rather than anyone else. They ought to know better about the history of their own lineage, rather than the claptrap of random strangers and their claims of "innacuracy".
@RETROGEMS 'random strangers and their claims of "innacuracy".' - random strangers? The BBC went back to the people that Haley visited in africa, and they actually said he just made it all up, and that his ancestors were not from that village. So who do you believe, the author who made millions from this book, or the people who actually know the truth and who says he was lying? Hmm? He was a sick fraud, pure and simle. Yes, black people can lie and be greedy too, imagine that!
@k1shaw2 what this amaze me because my dad name was george haley he would been 92 yrs he never knew his mom just his dad they arrive to baltimore in this house .. now i wonder but i guess i not importnat to the alex haley trait ... my dad do look like that alex haley
@mrlowdangle Roots is not completely untrue. Alex had the marriage, birth, and death certificates, of his ancestors. Now true enough, we don't know how Kunta did act when he was captured, or exactly what events took place on his voyage states. Or if the "master" did cheat on his wife! Or if another, slave girl did pretend to seduce "Toby" to throw off the oversear! But of course if you only read what is placed on the interenet, you would never know that. :)
i live in henning lol. there's a trail named after chicken george. I just moved there about 4 years ago so i don't know much about the town history but its a nice town. anyone interested in the museum should definatly come check it out.
Alex Haley, author of "Roots," was sued & lost to the white author Hal Courlander for Hailey's deliberate plagiarism of Courlander's 1967 novel: "The African."
@IWannaBeOnOprah The lumber company is still in Henning, and running under a different name. Most of it has been burned down, but they are still operating off the land!

Alex Haley plagiarized Hal Courlander's 1967 novel "The African" and simply called it "Roots."

What a beautiful home. I love old houses with their sense of history and character. I'd be happy to live in it now let alone 90 years ago.

I Just love this, so sad but good at the same time, to see the real people roots came from, and how the likeness was done so well for the film.

much of Roots was made up, taken form Courlander's 1967 novel: "The African." A good story but not true.
