Sons of the Pioneers brings my father back to me. Closing my eyes I'm transported back 50+ years, listening to my dad accompany with his harmonica, guitar or just sing-a-long. A treasured memory.
@rachellovesnatalie That's another reason I love posting this music. These songs spark so many memories for so many different people around the world. Thank you for sharing one of yours. :-)
@jackusdk Glad to know that, thanks. For me, and like much of "20th Century Music", this song evokes a feeling of simplicity and innocence from a bygone era. It brings back a feeling from my own youth that seems mostly lost these days. My hope is that it becomes a fond memory for him someday. As it's been said, sometimes it's the little things that count.
I love Sons of the Pioneers. My parents had it on vinyl. Don't know whatever happened to it. I bought it on CD. I'm 39 and I played it for my son. Maybe we'll have another fan??
@TheAlaskamike Sorry to hear that. I've had way too many 78's break over the years so I can somewhat understand. I'm glad I had this one to share with you.
wish i had kept my grandfather's collections which included many of the sons of the pioneers and roy rogers. makes me miss him very much. we used to sit and listen in his basement in west virginia for hours.
@TheOklagmcruiser I know what you mean. My grandfather's collection of music went to another part of my family and they sold it all. I have a few Roy Rogers 78's including a Christmas one that I'll be posting soon. Thanks for tuning in to my channel. :-)
Roy Rogers is not singing in this recording. I have this exact recording which was recorded in 1946. I bought the entire album called Cowboy Classics back then. They made another recording of this much earlier ( believe it was a transcription). This recording in my opinion is the best. That is Ken Carson Saying Cool Water.
This is one of the great records of all time. Yes, I use to listen to it on the radio. I drifted away from country-western music but I never lost my feeling of being stirred by it.
This song would really mean something if you left the headwaters of the Middle Concho and headed west through Castle Gap and on to Horse Head Crossing on the Pecos. Cool clear water would have really meant something to you, most definitely. It does mean something to all of us but not in the same way.
I'm wondering if that is Roy Rogers singing, he was their lead singer way back when! This is a wonderful version of the swong, one of my faves, thanks for posting!
@Lloydhl Yes, Roy Rogers is singing on this version. I'll add some more info. for you to check out. This is the re-recorded version they did in 1944 when they signed to RCA.
Thank you Althazarr. I love this music because it reminds me of my dad who used to sing "Cool Water". He's long gone and so are they, but this historical music lives on. I plan on singing it to my new granddaughter, and teaching her about western cowboy music.
Thanks for putting this on here! I have a 45 by them doing this song; probably in the early 50's. Was my favorite song, and, in some ways, still is. You go LaroldC! I am so tired of hearing all the "new singers" and their songs(that really do sound good), that are 90% "enhanced" in many and various ways.
There was no technology in music back then. You had to be born with sufficient talent to render that point moot and produce such beauty as this group did -- on 78 RPM ceramic. Incredible. (My dad called that machine a "talk-box"!)
@gussedup That's fantastic. I've been around them all my life. One of my grandmothers and a great Aunt had victrolas that I got to listen to growing up, and now I have three of my own,several console stereos with phonographs, and some modern players too. I really love records if you could tell and I'm 39.
Listening to the sons of the pioneers one expects at the close to hear Gabby Hayes say: 'Com\on Roy ,dad burn it;

@althazarr Someone played it at a pub I was in a few hours ago, hadn't heard that song since I was a kid.
I thought it was the same song that plays during the opening of Big Lebowski, but it turns out that song was Tumbling Tumbleweeds by the same group.
