  • as cool as cliff stoll is, he sure lacks the foresight the big players in the computer business had at that time. i don't know of a dentist who doesn't use a computerized chair with patience database and whatnot. nor would i want to go to one who doesn't have that equipment.

any politician who isn't computer literate and thus can't inform and back check certain data that he'd otherwise use unchecked is nowadays doomed to fail. he's (still) right with the actor-example though

  • @GameDocumentaries There is no need for these people to have any knowledge of computers beyond that of knowing how to use an application. Anyone can be taught how to use these programs relatively quickly. They need not know of what happens in the background. It only distracts from the task at hand.

Even though politicians have access to better communication technology, they still are practicing effetive communication, rather than effective computing.

  • @sniperpj21 i agree, but you're missing the point.stoll's remark didn't go against advanced computer use, but use of computers in general in these jobs:

"These are jobs [...] where you don't need to know ANY computing to do it"

His dentist example makes it even clearer. He specifically says he doesn't need one who is capable of using programs, but only one that is competent with teeth, so while your point is true, it is not Stoll's argument.

  • The interenet was useful for me in looking up telelphone wire diagrams so that I could link two different phone lines together.

  • is it at all ironic that i'm watching this on the internet?

  • Clifford is great. Saw him speak at Harper College(Illinois) regarding how he caught some hackers working for the KGB. About the late 80's or early 90's.

  • I remember reading Cliff Stoll's book at the age of 6 and asking Dad whether I could try and catch a hacker like him XD
