@SuperFlyGT Very very true as a general rule but there are one or two exceptions. Are you familiar with Mrs Thatcher (you will be now because of Meryl Streep playing her in the film)
She is transfigured by this song, like an angel come to Earth. I love Nanci and her band for giving us this performance. No other cover of this song compares. I'm moved every time I hear it again. Midler's version, though more popular, is overblown and distorts the song's exquisite message.
@ELVIS4221 Who on earth is the 'tiny mighty one'? Sounds like a miniature version of Superman.in a romper suit with a tiny S emblazoned on it- fiercely shaking his rattle ! Love the concept though ....
For me, Nanci is the original and best singer of this song. I saw her on TV, just her and her guitar and, I think, one other musician (male), guitar / vocals. This video is overproduced. More does not always equal better. Then I saw the version by the composer, Julie Gold! Wow! She first talks about how the song has evolved over more than two decades (the clip was from 2007. she wrote it in 1985). Julie has not lost an ounce of passion.
I love to listen to music, lots of it, but concerts are not my thing. I did see Nanci in the Gaiety Theater in Dublin, i think circa 87-88, i was only a whipper snapper, maybe 13-14yrs old. But i do remember her coming back on stage 3 times to a standing ovation that just continued on and on, and i do recall trying to keep tears from my eyes (i went with my Mom and her friend) as she sang. I think i was in love with Nanci!! She was so petite on the stage. Well anyway...that's my story.
This song was sung by John Rowles in the 90s and was the title of his album. John Rowles is a great singer since 1969: for four years was famous in worldwide as Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck but he came back in Oceania, wher is great now too as an icon, and based in Hawai. Great voice!
I love how Julie Gold sings it. She wrote it. She sings it with the most love and passion of all. Thank you for this masterpiece, Julie. From an old friend at HBO...
Wonderful (apart form the dodgy direction, eg, mike obscuring Nanci's face). Thank you for posting this fine performance of a great song. Slightly shocked to notice that the mullet was raging yet unto the Nineties.
Found this coming from the Bette Midler version. Never heard of Nanci before. This is a wonderful song, no matter who sings it, but in the words of the Idol/Talent milieu, Nanci owns it. I love Maria Callas, Connie Talbot, Elaine Paige & Haley Westensa, but I have to say this performance is now my favorite. Nanci's sweeter than sweete smile at the conclusion is also worth the price of admission.
Does anyone know if Nanci's ever been on Prairie Home Companion?
I can't believe I'm the first one to view this ! I lived in Ireland when Nanci recorded this and, if I remember rightly, this was #1 in the charts there for a while. I used to dream about this recording .. just wonderful, thank you for posting this ... made my day.
If there ever was an appeal by woman from the heart to stupid man - there you have it at 3.26

Love the Bluegrass - Hillbilly set up here. And the dude on the piano is unreal !!
Classic performance of a classic song from a classic time by an all time classic singer. I bow my head in reverence to it.
