I sang this piece in the globe in Stockholm with my school. !500 youths singing this miracle. I get goosebumps and tears in my eyes. I love this piece so much.
Same reaction here as Rosemary232. First time I heard it I was wondering what instruments they were using.... then it hit me, just the human voice. Awesome, beautiful, truly heavenly music. So glad Kings College Choir had this in the repertoire in 2009 and 2010 for Lessons and Carols. Heard it again live this morning. Amazing.
I was absolutely blown away when I heard this for the first time sung by Kings Choir in 2007 on Christmas eve. I think the speed is so right- it becomes a surreal experience which is both beautiful. mystical and deeply religious, for me at least.

This piece perfectly illustrates the weakness of the English choir. For this piece to work effectively, every voice must not only achieve perfect pitch, but all the voices must be perfectly balanced. The boy sopranos and altos are far to weak to sustain this. The result is far too much tenor, and not enough in the higher registers. The pace also maddeningly slow. A poor performance all around
Amazing!!

I also like both the tempo and the fragility of the treble... it sounds quite unearthly and haunting, surely just as intended.
