The minute Ellen Dolan pulled the plug SHE BECAME MARGO!! I remember this so well, crying because Casey was such a good character and EVERYONE was involved!! This is a great example of how great this soap used to be. Chris Goutman and Jean Passanante should have watched this to learn how to execute riveting story despite their limitations of budget cuts and whatever. I sure do miss ATWT and Ellen Dolan deserved an Emmy for her performance!
ok--what I;m taking from the scene is I can't believe Ellen played Margo for SOOO long. I think og Margot Colin, Hillary Bailey Smith and Ellen as equals in the role--ALL WONDERFUL!!! in their own way. But MC prob 3 yrs, HBS prob 5 yrs, ED prob, what, 20 yrs???? WOW!
@SoapsGoldenAge Margaret Colin played Margo from 1980-1983; Hillary Bailey from 1983-1989; Ellen Dolan from 1989-1993, and again from 1994-2010; and Glynnis O'Connor from 1993-1994.
My favorite scene from this storyline was shortly after this -- could have been in the same episode; anyway, it's where John comes to Tom and Margo's house to tell Margo about Casey's death. Talk about heartbreaking. Ellen Dolan is amazing.
I don't get that die with dignity shit. I don't want life support. But I don't want to be killed either. I want a natural death, but I don't want it to be called natural euthanasia. Euthanasia should be taken out of the verbiage of the medical community and have it reserved for where it belongs, in the criminal court system.
Touche. I shall remove the comment. You are right. I consider myself ghetto, so I feel free to say it but take offense when other use it. The right way to use is is seldom and only in appropriate context. Thumbs up to Oldestboy21 for pointing out my less than appropriate English usage. You would think I should know better since I am an English major. My apologies to all. The revised comment follows.
What perterbs me is that Margo pulls the plug and walks out. Shouldn't it be that if she really loved hot Casey, she would have stood in the room to be with him to the very end?
Just a small example of how absolutely brilliant ATWT was in the day...As the camera pans from Casey to the machine, the soft comforting music was interuppted by the sound of the monitor alarm, creating a feeling of dread and absolute suspense. Douglas Marland was a GENIUS.
This story was supposed to end several months before summer 1990, but because Hillary Bailey Smith was leaving and Ellen Dolan was arriving at the end of '89, ATWT got Bill Shanks to agree to stay on so viewers would get to see Casey with the "new" Margo long enough to be emotionally invested in what she did. This story was so superb, and it makes me sad that new viewers likely have no idea how special Casey and Lyla were.
Margo respected Casey and thought he was a good man. He was her step-father even though, he was MUCH YOUNGER than her mother. Margo honored his memory by naming her second son after him.
Casey Peretti was Katie's father and Katie was just a baby when he died. Katie did say that Margo doesn't like to talk about the part about how her(Katie's)father died for some reason, so I take it that Katie doesn't know that Margo pulled the plug on him.
Casey Peretti was a great man. He wanted Margo to do it. He wouldn't ask his wife, Llya to do it because he knew she would never have the strength. He wouldn't ask his colleague and friend to do it because he didn't want to jeopardize the man's career. So Margo was his best choice. Casey knew he wouldn't make it, being a doctor himself. They can still pray for a miracle?! Heh! Casey knew he would need much more than a miracle!
Casey had developed Guillian-Barre syndrome sometime during the Christmastime 1988, and by the spring of 1989 his immune system was so compromised by the disease that he caught pnuemonia which caused him to go further downhill (around the time Katie was born) that he later became paralyzed. He seemed to be improving somewhat in winter 1989/1990, but by this time seen here he had relapsed yet, again.
That's right an addition to what I wrote, in early June 1990 Casey had caught encephalitis because of the work he was doing to help Susan in the lab to find a cure for both his condition & AIDS (David Stewart was also helping w/ this in Atlanta at the CDD). That was a couple of weeks before these late June 1990 scenes.
The disease that Casey had was Guillian-Barre Syndrome which turned into encephalitis. Was Casey brain-dead or in an irreversible coma?

LOL I don't think they actually pull plugs. It's a euphemism.

Casey Peretti died at the age of 29, so young!
